I just had a Doppelbock Dunkel and now I really want to find the Hell come Spring -- something on which to set sights!

The blond bock from the Holy Mountain. Not just targeting "tickers" I guess. :grinning:

    Just a little tongue-in-cheek for y'all.

I have a mug that looks a little like that 1950's style label. You got a free case of Dopplebock Dunkel or Bergbock Hell with purchase of the mug. I went with the Dopplebock Dunkel, I never did care as much for the Bergbock Hell (certainly not a crate of them, heh, as it was, that was challenge enough with the Dopplebock). Don't know why, probably because of a lack of knowledge/appreciation of the style.

    Jahreskrug 2013? An annual offering?

For what it's worth, I'd have had 2 Krugs.

No offense, and not sure if you meant it to be comical, but this is quite funny simply in regards to the German beer market. Reminds me of the crazy "Minitruck Zugabe" that every brewery was involved in about 10-15 years ago - people bought cases of beer/mineral water simply for the truck, poured the beverage out in the parking lot and got their Pfand/crate deposit back. True story.

You might have to expound on this, because not drinking the beer still seems a waste when compared with the return deposit -- especially with Andechs.

It was probably an annual offering although the 2013 was the first one I'd ever seen. I saw the 2014 at a different bottle shop and thought it was much nicer looking than the one I'd purchased. Oh well, I have my Spezial Keller Steinkrug to keep me warm at nights, so I'm happy.

I was being a little cheeky with my description (I hadn't heard the Mini-truck story), of course the deal was if you bought a case of the Bergbock or Dopplebock you got a free mug. I sometimes phrase it the other way around to put the emphasis on the #properglassware, and since some of our most recent pics to this thread had some awesome looking #properglassware, I guess I was in a bit of a mood.

While we are on the subject though, there are some weird German giveaways with purchase of a crate. I should have started a thread back when to document what I'd seen. I myself am the proud owner of a Hofbräu tea light thingy, however I never pulled the trigger on the case of beer that came with a free bag of rock salt in the winter (sad that I can't remember which beer did this). Can you remember any good ones?

And as luck and good fortune would have it - the 2015 Jahreskrug is available now! Check out the bottom of the second page of this flyer. (er, and then scroll back up to note how much 11 liters of Mahr's is going for...)

This was more about other breweries... as I've mentioned before, once one brewery has success with anything, everyone jumps on board. In this case, there were a lot of mid/low-priced beers that were being poured out just for the giveaway.

Just as an example, this is what they look like.

Gotcha. Still seems like a waste to me -- I'd still eat all of my Golden Sugar Crisps after I dug the free toy from the bottom! :grinning:

Just curious if the Fastenbier was a recent tasting. If so, how is it holding up? There are still bottles available at my local shop and I may pick up a few more if the beer is still decent with some age on it. Prost!

Enjoyed this guy recently after returning from a trip to Bavaria. Purchased at the brewery. Cool 330ml bottle, date stamp L5219, best before April 2016. Balanced, snappy, bright, clean, dry with a crisp finish. Grassy, herbal hops really shine. Slightly rustic and reminds me a mix between Ayinger's Hell and their Bairisch Pils (also both excellent beers). Stellar stuff. Prost!

Stopped in at a local that had some Oktos left over from the season, but no good deals. Had been thinking about Optimator after having the Andechs Doppel over the weekend and saw this place had some... from the previous importer. Thought a little on it and decided to take a chance. Not bad. A bit caramelly, as Doppels will turn when aged, but some nice toastiness -- if not even roatiness -- and smooth, well mashed malt. Certainly more Bock than Sam Winter Lager!

Had another couple tonight. Though it may be terrific fresh, Optimator holds up well with age.

Been a while since I had that one, but I remember it tasting a bit too dark fruity for my tastes.

Just saw my local finally got some fresher Schneider Weisse stuff in -- hoping to swing by this week to grab some Tap 7 and Aventinus...hell, may even get crazy and get the Eisbock while I'm at it. That one is a year+ old at this point, but I figure it can handle it. Fall weather = doppelbock weather!

When fresh, I only got a mild dark fruit character from Optimator, more toasted bread crust with some molasses -- and not at all off style.

Aventinus, on the other hand, will have some big fruitiness to it, but it's the beer that makes me glad to be a beer drinker. I go back to it in times when I'm bored with beer. I drink an Aventinus and wonder why I don't drink it all the time... because it wouldn't be as special the next time I had it after a good break.
