Figured that lol
Priceline- name your own price, can work pretty good for Chicago if there are no big conventions in town. I would try 4 stars on magnificent mile or millennium park options, and start with $100. I'm guessing between $100-150 will land you a room at the Hyatt.
The brewery is about 3 miles west of downtown in a warehouse district, surrounded by not the best of areas, so I think downtown is the best option, unless you do an air bnb in wicker park or bucktown area.
Thank you sir
If you're willing to go on the cheap go to Google Maps and search for hostels. There are a few close by that I think you can get for less $50 a night.
Can't do hostels I think I found one around 3 miles away for 120
So I put this out to a couple locals via PM but I'm going to slightly thread jack and post it here as well...
I have a good friend who has offered to put myself and my guest up in a hotel based on points that he accumulates for work. He gave me three options for hotels and I've narrowed it down to these two: 5300 West Touhy, Skokie and 5615 N. Cumberland Ave, Chicago.
I know neither are all that close to the Fulton St. location but free is free. I'm thinking we'll park at the hotel and take Uber to Fulton St. then use the shuttle to the barrel warehouse for the tasting. From there we will probably either stick around in that area for the evening or else shuttle back to Fulton St. and Uber back to the hotel - at which time we would find a bar or bars for the evening in that area.
So my question is which location would be better? Is it better to stick around the barrel warehouse for the evening on Friday and then take transportation back to the hotel or are there decent bars nearby either hotel? We'll probably try and drive to a couple bottle shops the next day before heading out of town. Thanks for any help
That is great news. I'm guess all the usual spots. Not sure if I will be in town but wherever I am I will be on a Rate hunt haha.
I was selected in the 2nd chance drawing. It had my name automatically in the form to fill out. It also had a spot for my guest and their email address. Once I submitted I received an email with a ticket stating both our names and the fact that I paid $80. However my friend did not receive an email with a ticket. Is this normal? Will the one ticket that I received be sufficient for both of us to attend? The FAQs mentioned two tickets. So it has me concerned that I only received one ticket. If anyone has any info on this or had the same experience please let me know. If your guest received an email with a ticket I am going to have to figure out how to get that resent...
None of those are real good options but like you said, Free is Free. They are about the same distance to the brewery so I would just go with what ever hotel you prefer.
These hotels are not close at all and this is going to be a pricey Uber ride. You may want to think through this "free" hotel option. As a local to Chicago, this doesn't make a lot of sense.
The Cumberland option puts you right next to the Cumberland Blue line stop. Take Blue line to Grand and youre only 1.5 miles from Fulton St. Cab/Uber/Walk that 1.5 mile
If you check out the FAQ's No. 18 answers this question. Hope this helps.
neither session is sold out, wonder if there will be a 3rd wave going out this afternoon
Crossing my fingers for a third wave. 3rd times a charm, right???
GF got our second drawing winning email Friday evening around 6:15pm. See you guys in a few weeks whoever is going to session A! We got a room at a hostel in Wicker Park for $60 by the way. Heading to STL immediately after to pick up our Abraxas allocations!
I too will be coming in from out of town (TX) so any help would be appreciated!
Im going to session B and then abraxas the following day....my body/liver (and especially my wallet) is going to hate me
You could also take the blue into Clark/Lake and transfer over to the Pink line and get off at Morgan and be right in the West Loop area.
Personally, I would consider passing on the free hotel and try to priceline something in River North/Mag Mile/Millennium Park area. You can probably grab something for around $100 and cut your travel times/expenses quite a bit.
Thanks. I did see that in the FAQ's. To me it still suggests that there are two tickets. I only received one ticket via email. So I am wondering if people received two separate tickets or if there is just the one that will allow both to enter.
i only got 1 in my email (purchasing 2 tickets) - but on that ticket it has both mine and my guests name. I assume they will just use that info.
Metra could be an option as well. One good thing about this event being on a weekday, is that the train schedule won't suck. The Western Ave. stop (Western & Grand) serves the Milwaukee West, Milwaukee North, and North Central lines. I have taken Metra to previous events at the Barrel Warehouse. It's about a 20 minute walk, just because you have to go all the way around the railyard. It's not scenic, but I've never felt unsafe.
Could also just take a bus on Touhy going east to Western, then the Western bus all the way down (South) to Fulton. Then you could walk the 0.75 miles east on Fulton to the tap room. It's like an hour or so on buses, but the ride will cost about 3 bucks. Pretty cheap option that lets you take advantage of the free hotel. You would have to switch from the 49B to the 49 on the way down Western (near Howard I believe), then vice versa on the way back, as one single bus doesn't go all the way down Western from Touhy.
I do agree with others on thinking about passing on the room and staying closer, but if you don't care about the long ride on public transportation it's not a bad option. I know the Western bus runs all night to get back and think the Touhy one does as well.
So what is the deal with the tickets they sent via email after paying? Mine has lines for the winners first name, last name, email address, the guests name, DOB and email address and under that is the winners mailing address. Is this the same with others tickets? I just want to be sure I didn't type things in wrong when checking out.
yes thats how mine is formatted as well.
This was the case for me as well so you're good! Except I F'd up and put only my first name in the guest box and accidentally put my last in the email box so hopefully I can get that figured out.
If you stay at the hotel on Cumberland, as the previous person above said, you can easily hop on the Blue Line from there. From there you can take it into the city and transfer to a Green Line train at the Clark/Lake station and take it westbound out of the city and get off at the Ashland stop. From there, you have a short walk to the brewery. Just go north on Ashland for about 2 blocks, and then west (left) on Fulton for another 2 blocks and you are there. I plan on taking the Green Line in from my house, as I am located in Oak Park and live only a short walk away from the tracks.
Same for me. I put my guest's name and DOB in the box provided. They will be checking ID's of guests to make sure they match the name provided on the ticket.
Thanks guys... now last question... is it presumptuous for me to think GI is going to come up with a solution for us dragging around 3 wooden boxes of Rare, snifter, etc from the Fulton location to the barrel warehouse and back? I know they said more details will be provided, hopefully we can figure out the situation a little more and see if we are going to be hauling this stuff around and waiting in long lines, etc.
I am trying to figure out my plans since we have others who are not attending tagging along and are going to be driving us around some of the time. Plus I need to figure out the hotel situation soon.
im assuming theyre going to say heres your tote, now deal with it.
however, if youre going to have people dropping you off, why not just leave it in that car after pickup on the way to the barrel house?
New poll idea. Over/Under on amount of totes filled with Rare that mysteriously walk away as happy patrons become fuzzy of memory during said Rare Day event. Anyone open to set the bar?
Seriously though, I will not have the luxury of leaving my tote with someone since we are not from the Chicago area. That sumbitch will be latched on to my hands the whole night. Maybe even murse style.
That's been an issue at darklord day, people just leave their 4 pack on a table for a minute and it disappears...
one of the only reasons why im debating driving.
Agreed. It would make way more sense to do the tasting first and then get the bottles. An even crazier idea would be to get the bottles at the Barrel House.
Thanks for confirming. Instead of saying tickets on the FAQ they should have stated that there would be a single ticket with both names to be clear!
I did not read all 22 pages of this thread. I'm not sure if this was already pointed out...
Does anyone else see more that one bottle in the boxes on page one? I see an upside down bottle behind the one in front.
I think it's just a shadow....
I thought about this but wasn't sure of how secure parking is there.
You and me both man....thinking about taking a backpack, but I don't want to draw anymore attention to myself than I already will being an out of towner. The last thing I'd want is to take a bottle or club to the dome and wake up without my bottles!
I think you're safe, so long as GI lets you take in a backpack (it'd be really dumb if they didn't). You'll be fine in that area.
