Thought I'd start a new thread for this next round of updates. For reference, check out the End of Year Site Update thread after reading this one.

Based on more community feedback and discussions with the mod team, I've simplified things further to help eliminate confusion that was being caused be previous wording (active/inactive), associated definitions, and last activity thresholds.

    Beers Status
Beers now have three status types:
    • Active = tagged as still in production (year-round, seasonal, rotating release, etc).
      • No longer defined by the last rated threshold.
      • Immune from being automagically tagged as "retired."
      • Appears as a tab under brewery beer lists.
    • Retired = tagged as discontinued (no longer brewed).
      • Can still be rated, but won't be ranked/appear on top rated beer lists.
      • Appears as a tab under brewery beer lists.
    • New = added to the site within the last 18 months.
      • After 18 months, "new" beers will be automagically tagged as "retired," unless tagged as "active" or "retired" before that. This helps us retire one-off beers, with some wiggle room, which have become the vast majority of new beers being added to the site in recent years.
      • Appears as a tab under brewery beer lists.
If a beer's status needs updating to "active" or "retired," please use the Beer Tools at the top of the beer's page and the mod team will be happy to assist.

    Top Rated New Beers
Now displays ranked beers that've been added within the last 18 months to sync with what's considered "new." See: https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/top-new/

    Weighted Ranks
No additional changes. Only beers rated within the last two years (and not retired) will get ranked (and be considered for top rated lists). We're going to give this more time to settle in before making any further adjustments.

Questions? Additional feedback? Let me know. In the meantime, I need a beer...

    Thanks, everyone! :beers:

Thanks, I think the endless variations of Viennese coffee and nubs of something or other were starting to clog the listings of some notable breweries. Tho looking at Hop Butcher For The World in Chicago, is it possible they have 150 active brews? But if the poster child for this topic is Modern Times, they still have 306 allegedly active. The League of Beautiful People may frown, but I think they're making some of this up.

Exactly, especially since "Active" now includes rotating availability brews. Look at Tree House, they have 490 active

345 new beers were added to Other Half in 2020 alone.

Any idea what happened to the best beer by country list? The number of countries listed seems to have shrunk significantly.

The way you put this seems a little strange since "new" beers are also "active" beers (which I hope remains the case). I get why you'd have the automagic inconsistency in all active beers to reduce future mod maintenance in a system that can never be 100% perfect, but I don't get why anyone would tag a "new" and "active" beer as "active." Would doing so automagically prevent a "new" beer from becoming retired once the 18 months have passed (and thus keeping it "active" after it's no longer "new")?

Current. If you change the status from "New" to "Active," it's now "Active." You might do this for a beer that you know is going to be a year-round, seasonal, or rotating beer versus a one-off. Otherwise, just let the system sort it out.

Gotcha. But with the way beers are organized, "new" is also "active" anyway... and if changing a beer from "new" to just purely "active" means that the beer is no longer considered "new" then that seems like it goes against the purpose of a "new" category (which is defined by the date added to the site).

The New tab on brewery pages is simply meant to show beers that have been added within the last 18 months, and has nothing to do with the beer being another status type.

The New status type is more of a backend thing, which I included in my post to help explain how things are working now.

Yes, that is the correct list. It used to show about 200 or so countries, now the list is way shorter.

I cut out countries that basically had no list.

How come I am getting beers from Tavour and Craft Shack that are listed as retired here?

This update kind of explains why. Use Report an Update to alert us of a beer that's still in production. Thanks!

Its possible the beer is a new batch that was released. You can suggest an update on the beer page and ask that it be un-retired.

Are we going to add to the style list some things like "milkshake " beers or under IPA list "New England" and West Coast"

This update isn't about beer styles, but we are discussing them elsewhere.
