I didn't see bombers at Safeco when I was there the other weekend, and the MLB Ballpark app's Safeco beer finder doesn't mention them. I'm guessing they did away with them.

it's been a couple years since i've been back to fenway (after catching at least a game a season from '94 through 2008) but the good ole days really faded from 2005 on. a lot of season ticket holders would sell their seats after 2004 since people were willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for them. wouldn't be surprised if the scene is much better today now that the bandwagon has broken up a bit.

I was always surprised they offered glass bombers at Safeco, honestly.

The new "bargain" is the 16 oz. tallboy cans of Interurban IPA. And "cheap" beers in the Pen an hour before game time. [shrug]

Went to the former bomber site, it is a thing of the past, nothing but draft beers that can be found elsewhere in the park.

You recapitulate the situation well. Pre-2004, the fans at Fenway were, in my estimation, comprised of a preponderance of old-timers, long-sufferers, and true believers--in other words, the creme de la creme. Then, that 2004 team did the impossible, and all those who'd been going for years (or decades) could relax a little, which opened the floodgates for a new generation--a younger, trendier crowd, who cared a little less but who had more money to burn.

I suspect the crowds have since "re-normalized" a little, but it'll be impossible to ever recapture the feeling and demographic before they finally won the "first one" 12 years ago. That said, even from afar, 2007 and 2013 particularly were pretty special. I went to none of those games, but the fans who did did not strike me as phonies.

Well, at least they've won one WS, we don't have that going for us, yet. But, even that was pre-Moreno, so....

I went to Safeco last night, and had a Schooner Exact Berliner Weiss. At first I was, like, "wow, a Berliner Weiss at a ballgame, that's pretty cool." Then as the game wore on (and it wasn't going so well), I began to get a little disgruntled about my beer. It seemed to have a flavor that was a little off. But I had liked the beer OK (OK but not great) a few innings earlier. That got me wondering about the plastic cups. Does the plastic affect the flavor? Of course, I wouldn't use a plastic cup at home, so I don't have much experience. Has anyone else noticed any off flavors in their Safeco beers? Any opinions about whether plastic can do this?

I've never had a problem with the beer in plastic cups at Safeco or The Clink. Goodlife and Crux in Bend often use them if you're sitting outside. Never had an issue.

I've also had that Jawja Peach Berliner at Safeco. Mighty tasty.

I've never had an issue with plastic cups. FWIW though, I find that some styles, and Berliners are one, really are better the colder they are. When they get too warm, they seem to get a bit too sharp, in a bad way.

Yep. You don't nurse Berliners. Those added sugars can get super gross as they warm up.

OK, next game at Safeco, I'll take your advice. I do nurse beers at a ballgame. At $12 a pop, I've got to make them last!

Not that I'm suggesting anything, but, if one were stumble across a plastic pint bottle of tequila, and if one were to buy a Mikes Hard Lemonade, one could perhaps create an impromptu Margarita. Or, so I've heard.

Even if this weren't at a ballpark, I would still think it foul.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with plastic in terms of flavor. Randy Mosher in 'Tasting Beer' says "But the logistics of a large competition like the World Beer Cup are hairy enough already, so just about all homebrew and commercial beer gets judged in plastic cups."

Need to make it back for a game really soon!

Nice pun, and it reminds me (as a theater loving guy as well as a baseball and beer loving guy) of Shakespeare: Fair is foul, and foul is fair:

I couldn't quite figure out the right beer reference, so I toss it out to you all: turn the Shakespeare quote into a beer quote. Extra points if it's a haiku.

T'is a tall order indeed to follow the Bard, but here goes a very rough first attempt with a tired mind...

    Double double dry-
    hopped rarities cause toil and
    trouble. Embrace beer.

    A pale blond colored

    Proves that fair is foul

I see you, and raise you another:

    To drink, or not to
    drink homemade shit at Safeco
    that is the question.

Here's another pitch (or swing and miss), slightly more in the spirit of that verse, where we're always at odds with each other, and one's loss is invariably another's gain...

    Root, root, root for the
    home team, unless you're away.
