Growing up, "geek" was definately not something you wanted to be called (regardless of the context). Snob wasn't much better.

Things have changed a lot, but I still don't refer to myself or anyone else as a beer geek/snob. I just say that I like good beer. If that needs further clarification to anyone I talkiing to, then they probably just aren't that into beer.

Beer is meant to be a social drink, and not one to fuss over ad nauseam. Yes I won't get caught dead drinking a macro brew, but that is because I don't care for them as opposed to a great porter or stout. There are so many great brews available, most of which I won't get to try in my lifetime, thus there is no time in which to be snobbish. Good beer is good beer no matter who made it.

I think that most craft beer drinkers are beer geeks BUT all have moments of being snobbish...CHEERS

A beer geek enjoys good beer and brings some of his goodies to a party to share and enlighten others. A beer snob enjoys good beer and brings his goodies to a party and won't even let other people look at their beer and then flame everyone out loud because they have Bud Light or Coors Light.

I apologetically call myself a "Beer Snob" when I turn down free crappy beer at work functions. ("I know it's free, but I'm too much of a beer snob. I wish I could") However, I'd rather lead someone to ANY craft beer rather than accuse them of bad taste, and I often cite Blue Moon/Yuengling as a good "stepping stone"... so I guess that makes me a Beer Geek, and not a Snob?

I like this thread! I consider myself a beer geek, for sure, but not a beer snob. It irks me a little when I hear others say things like "oh I don't drink adjunct lager swill pisswater" or things like that, or they avoid it at a party. Don't be a douche. Although I love craft, I've got no problem knocking down a 12 pack of PBR, Coors, or the like. Is it the greatest beer ever? No. But it's still beer, and I like it. I haven't came upon many beers I honestly don't like.

Although there is a green bottle curse for me. My most hated beer is Heineken, that really does taste like piss. Any beer in a green bottle, I probably won't like it.

OH THANK YOU OP for posting this. I've had this discussion with dozens of microbrewery/sales reps.
I consider myself a beer enthusiast, that is I'm excited about craft beer. There's a few dozen beers I like that only have 75-78 rating on here, and there's some with 90+ I don't care for. I like the chart posted here, and I hope the snob is just a stage on the way to beer greatness!

Beer snobs complain about drain pouring their 4 day old "heady" or "pliny" because it wasn't fresh.

In person, not really. But there does seem to be a subclass on here and other forums who fit the definition. I honestly never knew so much beer ends up in the U.S. wastewater system until I started coming here.
