My wife has planned out a family vaction on a Disney Cruise ship, which sounds fun mind you. But one of the selling points she gave me was the built in child care with loads of activites for the young 'uns while the adults lounge by the pool with drinks. She promised to buy me a commemerative mug so I get a discount at the floating bars and resturants. Right about here is when I started to worry. "What, pray tell, will they be filling my mug with?"
So I turn to my BA comrades in arms, can I hope for a decent tap or two? Or am I doomed to BMC for my time afloat?

Can't speak for Disney, I thought someone said you could bring your own on. Which I would do. Just went on Princess in January, all BMC.

I don't know exactly what they serve, but I'm guessing you'll probably end up drinking wine and/or liquor (assuming/hoping you like one of those options).

I think you will have better luck if you do an Alaskan cruise at some point. (Highly suggest it, btw.)

Ugh... mostly crummy beers I would imagine. I'm smuggling bourbon for my up and coming cruise.

However, most cruises will allow a couple of bottles of wine per stateroom, maybe bring a couple of 750's of good beer instead? I think that would work.

I had heard you can bring your own too. Only second hand source and website doesn't say.
If I can, I'll bring my own. But taps would be better..
If BMC is all there is, I'll drink wine.

Don't expect much.. Sneak some mini bottles of booze in your bag and sip on some rum&coke for the week.

Which boat? We went on the Disney Dream last month and it was pretty much a beer wasteland. I did find a pale ale at the 687 sports bar on deck 4. The beer was also called 687 and from what I gathered talking to the bartender, it's brewed for them by Widmer Brothers. The downside is that this bar is only open after 9pm. One night I saw people in one of the clubs drinking SN Torpedo and Sweetwater IPA. I went to the bar and asked to see the beer menu and they weren't on there. I struck up a conversation with the bartender and she said people are allowed to bring their own alcohol on board but are supposed to keep it in their room. She also said the staff doesn't push the issue as a matter of customer service. Next time I'm taking a case to keep in my stateroom fridge and an insulated mug! I'd suggest bringing your own or sticking to mixed drinks.

I'd love to go on an Alaskan cruise, my first choice actually. But with a 9 and 6 year old, Disney was the compromise.

The Disney cruises you can bring your own beer, it just has to be consumed in your room. Other cruises like Carnival only allow one 750ml bottle per person. I'll try and find the thread where all this info was posted.

On a recent cruise for my bachelor party, several of us brought 750mL wine bottles that we had emptied out, filled with the liquor of our choice (one with rum, one with bourbon, one with Jack) and then re-corked them at a local winemaking store. They passed as wine (with little to no scrutiny) and we saved boatloads at the bars.

Thanks! It is indeed the Dream we are going on. I'll definately start planning out my beer agenda. What will fit in my suitcase...

I would call the customer service number and tell them you plan on bringing beer with you to keep in your room because they don't serve your preferred brand. Ask about the best way to do this - whether you should carry it on or have them deliver it to your room. Everything you carry on goes through a much more relaxed version of airport style screening so you may be questioned by someone there that isn't familiar with the policy. However, if you check it with a porter and have it delivered to your room, it might be manhandled with the rest of the luggage. If you go that route I would highly suggest cans.

I was on a Carnival Cruise a few years ago. There was one bar by the dining room that had Sam Adams but that bar was only open from 4pm - 9pm. The rest of the bars only had BMC, Heineken or Amstel Light...

Thank goodness they had plenty of Crown Royal on the ship!

That's exactly what I did on my first cruise, and will be doing again on my cruise at the end of the month.

Ask the kids if for their next cruise they would like to see whales, bears, salmon, seals, bald eagles, porcupine, sled dogs (on top of a glacier), take a helicopter ride...

If you do the Alaskan cruise in the future, you could really work a lot of beer into it. I think most leave from Seattle now, though it used to be Vancouver more so. Stops routinely happen in Juneau (Alaskan Brewing Company), Skagway (Skagway Brewing Company) and mine had an excursion to Haines (Haines Brewing Company).

Hopefully something like that will be on my Celebrity ship, it would be nice to be able to get a good beer every now and then.

I was on a celebrity cruise two years ago that had some Hitachino beers in a sushi restaurant but everything else was standard stuff. It's nice to see them delving into craft and providing more options. I also took a royal Caribbean cruise through Northern Europe in 08 and they had a beer called Royal or Royale that was brewed by Palm.
