Oh yeah. Belhaven is a good call. I agree he should enjoy a good amber too.

Not the season , but Marzens are high on malt and low on the bitter. If a DB Vienna Lager is too hoppy, not sure where to go with that.

I have had Satan's Pony (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1659/4837/), which I really enjoyed, so I do keep an eye out for a good amber

I have put Helles, Bocks and Dunkels on my radar - trying to familiarise myself with them. As far as Scotch ales go, I've tried DB's Kilt Flasher (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/18539/81099/) and enjoyed it. I also have a Dirty Bastard (https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1199/7463/) in the fridge waiting for a drink

Dunno what to say. Maybe it was just a bad batch - who knows

Thanks for the input thus far. The suggestions here give me much to try and I'm always open to try good, tastefully-hopped beers, so I can see my preferences broadening for sure.

Any good hopped offerings that provide a decent gateway for someone who prefers a good malt?

Add this one to your list. I don't want to say slam dunk, but I would be really surprised if you didn't enjoy it based on what you have. Should be pretty easy to find too

@Kaapstadmk if you are looking for some gateway hoppy beers pilsner is a good start. Deschutes mirror pond pale ale and firestone walker dba were goof entry points for me into hoppier beers. Both are decidedly malty for their styles, but the hops are there for sure.

If you're like me then you would love Belgian beers. Ive pretty much completely stayed away from hoppy beers until recently as I've been trying to expand my palate a bit. You sound like you would love yourself some Belgian triples, quads, or any of the Belgian ales. Personally, I would recommend La fin du monde (which is a Canadian triple actually, and one of my favs), duvel (amazingly balanced beer), Kasteel, or the godly beer St Bernardus abt 12 (the holy grail of quads). if I'm not able to make a trip to a good beer shop then golden monkey is another one I like to drink. Now, if you want a really malty beer which pretty much zero bitterness then you can try the weyerbacher quad which is so smooth it's almost syrupy

Came here just to say this. Dubbels and Quads will get you that sweet flavor with some dark fruit flavors. And I'll preach on tripels all day long, but it's gonna depend on how you feel about banana/bubble gum/clove. Fin du Monde or Tripel Karmeliet should be easy to find. And speaking of banana, Hefeweizen or Dunkelweizen is a good way to go, too.

These links are a good start, since the top listed beers in each style listing are widely distributed and likely on the shelf at your local beer store.

    Porter https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/159/
    Dubbel https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/57/
    Brown Ale https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/74/
    Oatmeal Stout https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/69/
    Dunkelweizen https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/91/
    Scotch Ale https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/77/
Amber Ale (some are hop forward, some malt forward) https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/128/
    Doppelbock https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/35/
    Dunkel Lager https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/46/
    Schwarzbier https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/style/31/

These are all malt-driven styles with either caramel, bready, or roasted flavors.

Those are malty beers for the most part, but only the German beers would be all malt due to the Reinheitsgebot. The others often use sugars or adjuncts such as oats.

True. But I just was using the word "all" to refer to beer styles in the list, not "all malt".
