@Jason and I hit Charlotte a few times between 2011 and 2013. We had an awesome time, tried a lot of beers, and made some great friends. We've been wanting to return for years and the Untappd Beer Festival on May 4 gave us the push we needed. Looking forward to exploring what's new in Charlotte, checking out the fest, and talking with the 200 or so breweries that'll be pouring.

We'll be in town May 3-5 and would love to meet up for some beers! Who's down for meeting up? Anyone else going to the fest?

We're also looking for any must hit spots that have opened up within the last 5 years or so. Thanks in advance!

https://www.charlotteagenda.com/31429/breweries-in-charlotte/ - this might help! Lots of new openings in the last 5 years! Many are in pockets of 2-5 breweries in an area of Charlotte, which might help you find new spots to try, as well!

If you have time make a trip to Ass Clown brewery just north of Charlotte. Really good beers and always a huge selection. Brewers at 4001 Yancey also has an even larger variety of some really great beers and their pizza is awesome as well.

Unfortunately or time is tight, so I don't think we'll be venturing outside of Charlotte.
And it looks like they're right down the road from OMB (love them) and Sugar Creek, too.

Places I know we'll hit ... OMB & Noda. A stop to Brawley's to say hello is on our list as well.

For sure! Brawley's will look a lot different than 5 years ago and the Olde Meck beer garden has undergone some major renovations as well. If you haven't been to the new Noda brewery, it is a major upgrade from the old location in terms of outdoor space (but looses some of the indoor intimacy of the original location...which is re-opening the taproom in may after a 3 year hiatus).

We've been to all three, but the last time was in 2013. Looking forward to checking out the upgrades!

Here is a very recent thread on the same question:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/where-to-stop-in-charlotte.610856/

I always find that using the searching "Titles Only" in the South Atlantic Forum with Charlotte as the keyword is helpful too:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/commun...q=Charlotte&o=date&c[title_only]=1&c[node]=17

This seems like a good time to ask for sticky's or something similar for popular South Atlantic cities such Charlotte, Asheville, Richmond, Myrtle Beach, Orlando etc.

I enjoyed meeting you guys at Duckworth's the last time you guys were in town! Let us know your schedule once you decide where you're heading.

Since you are already heading to Brawleys and Old Meck, be sure to hit these other not-to-miss spots:

    The Cellar at Duckworth's
    Heist
    Resident Culture

@abb610 Thanks. I've taken a look at some of the recent recommendation threads. This one is focused on who wants to meet up for some beers May 3-5 and where? And we'll definitely post updates as plans unfold.

Site suggestions? Feel free to drop 'em in BeerAdvocate Talk. I think there's probably a thread on regional stickies, too.

Looking forward to having a beer again soon!

You should visit Town Brewing which is located on Morehead St. They opened not quite a year ago, I believe. Great beer, great location, great people.

Glad to see Noda is already on your list! You should definitely check out their new one since you haven’t been there. I still prefer the first one myself. Just moved from Charlotte to Asheville a couple years ago but whenever I’m back there, Noda is a must. I like Sugar Creek too. There are so many but Asheville has them topped for sure!

Burial on the whole is better than any CLT brewery...but for the whole city...I wouldn't say "for sure". We don't have one brewery pumping out sours like the funkatorium but besides that, our best matches up well with Asheville's best. Heist, Resident Culture, and Wooden Robot would be top 5-6 in Asheville.

The best breweries is Charlotte area are:
    Resident Culture
    Heist
    D9
    Wooden Robot
    Armor Artis
    Divine Barrel

I wouldn’t waste time going to:
    Sycamore
    Sugar Creek

Not for me. Too many people IMHO for it to turn out to be anything but a giant clusterfuck. 15,000 people for 182 breweries is a bit much. Huna day is like 3000 people for 135 breweries and 5 times the space (and as big as I can stomach). If I won or was gifted a ticket I would check it out. When they announced this as 15k tickets, I thought it was a misprint and figured they meant 5k.

Yeah, everyone I have talked to expects a clusterfuck. Apparently they have reduced the number of tickets they are trying to sell to 12,500. I dont think that they will sell anywhere close to that. I'm concerned because GABF has 15,000 per session and 800 breweries!! 180 could end the day quick.

As organizers who've hosted 15,000+ attendee fests, we're attending with the understanding that it's a year one event and that all fests have issues. Hell, we're still learning after hosting over 70 of them and we're always looking for ways to improve.

As attendees, we're viewing it as a great opportunity to catch up with friends, meet some new ones, and support the local beer scene. Plus the lineup of brewers looks awesome and we're looking forward to trying some new beers!

Anyway, hope to see you guys in Charlotte at the fest or elsewhere. We'll be posting a rough itinerary soon.

I love Resident Culture, they do a lot of NEIPA one offs, but they also do Pils, sours and other Belgian styles. Big and open which is nice vs a dark place like a Burial. Heist is about around the corner, it’s usually very crowded, but it’s big too, parking is a hassle.

Old Mecklenburg for German style beers exclusively, good food too. Huge place that takes up 4 acres of Charlotte, indoors and out, band on weekends. Great place to sit and sip on a multitude of beers.

    Yessir.

I think folks have too much of a view that it's an "exchange." Although I tend to go to less and less of these big events, it is in my home town and it's an experience. If it is 65$ worth of beer you want then just go to the store. It looks to be a nice late spring day and if the Wells Fargo is not your thing, then run uptown for a little fun and try a few new beers that otherwise you might not get to try.

And for the true neighborhood experience--a brew on the patio at Brawley's on Friday is the BEST "ticket" in town.

Not able to make the fest due to my band playing that night up in Noda at Jack Beagles. If you are in Noda Saturday night try to swing by there, it’s a few blocks up from Heist and very close to Salud.
