Is it just me or does the newest store just not live up to the hype ?
Now that old store is closed or will be by the 31st there is no other choice..
I dont understand why they wont fill your own growler there , that crock about it being law doesnt fly !
Maybe if they stepped up trying to get in HARDER to find brews ? I dont know I am just putting it out there.

Those guys are crooks! 21.95 for Bramble and Lolita is not the normal price. They charge 2x what other (better) stores in Rochester charge and still sell out miraculously. And any growler can be filled by any bar/store in NY, if they make you buy one of their barnded growlers then they are just trying to make extra money off the customers, surprise surprise. I do not shop there anymore.

I agree the for sure that the new store just isnt living up. But, the writing was on the wall when they started letting go of all their knowledgable staff and replacing them with young kids who dont much about beer at all. I too have stoped going there as well.

That spiel about the growler law sounds like B.S. I'm not in Rochester, but living downstate I have never had an issue with getting any growler filled by any individual establishment. I routinely bring growlers from directly competing distributors into the opposite store and no one has ever given me a problem.

Oh you HAVE to use one of the growlers they provide for cleanliness issues supposedly.. Its a 2 deposit which you get back when you return it. All that being said I have some very nice swingtop growlers I like getting filled and keep them PERFECTLY clean on my own !

Forget BOTW. they charge too much for their beer & the staff there can be a bunch of pricks. As for another place that sells craft in the ROC dont forget about southtown beverage, they have a decent selection, friendly & knowledgeable staff and they have some beers there that are seasonal/close to best by date for good prices, Ive found some really good buys there

I go to Beers of the World, Nathanials, Wegs, and 'The Corner Store' (Small place near me in the city). Never made it out to Webster...will soon. Southtown if I want a cheap keg.

Nathaniels consistently has the best prices and a pretty good selection. He tweets limited stuff which is a blessing and a curse. He doesn't get large quantities but stays full.

Beers of the World's staff being pricks doesnt bother me because I'm not Johnny-be-my-friend. When I go there I know that I am going to pay a little more but I can justify that with selection. We can complain about Bourbon County being over 20 bucks but where else do you have a chance of getting one?(I have not seen one anywhere this year but know where a few bottles of bramble and coffee were a couple times) Also, their growler selection sucks so far...that i have seen... so they can keep their logo glass.

BOTW 'is what it is.' I've accepted it and don't expect it to change. They serve a purpose, but it's preferable to support the other guys in town whenever you can.

I got my coffee and bramble at Nathaniels, my buddy got half a case of bramble at southtown, they were both charging 13.99/bottle. So yeah, no reason to go to BOTW anymore.

I've been subscribed to this school of thought for a while now. Before I moved away, I was at a point where I wasn't concerned about buying single 12 ounce bottles of things, at that was about all that BOTW had going for it. If I couldn't find something that I wanted - and for less - at Hegedorns or Wegmans, well, that was a rare occasion. And I've had far, far more problems with dusty bottles and awful service at BOTW than any other store in the area.

I work regular hours. I still need to go to beers of the world.

The bramble was at southtown a good week after it's release. Also your original statement was where else could you get GI special releases, not who has the most convenient hours for the 9-5 worker.

Not sure why you want to argue with me. N's had 7 bottles of coffee that were gone by noon. BOTW = my best odds for special releases. Goodbye.

Seems like this topic comes up quite often. I believe everyone knows that they will be paying a premium price at BOTW. For a long time it was the only game in town. Since Rochester embraced craft beer we've been fortunate to have several other stores make a concerted effort to provide the products the beer enthuthiasts are looking for.
As far as the "special" or "limited" releases, just get used to the fact that normally only small shipments are made to local distributors. Those are sent out on a "Who's my buddy?" allocation. Guess that's why I try to be a buddy with the Brewery Reps and the local distributors.

I go through this argument in my head every time I walk in there. The problem lies with me though, I drive past BoTW on E. Hen. on my way into work. Their selection isn't terrible, but rarely is it awesome anymore. That may be an issue caused by distro things though, or the fact that I drink a lot and have simply had a lot of beer. I know I'm going to pay more, but I also know that most of the time I am going to find what I'm looking for. Admittedly, I went to HS with Jay and love NSCS. I should probably just leave 5 minutes early for work...

Based on the advice in this thread I visited Hegedorns and I can't say I was very impressed :slight_frown: They have some very interesting selections, for sure, but it's basically an entire aisle of cooled macro-lagers and a paltry couple shelves of craft beers. I also saw a Victory Saison bottled 07/15/2007 0_o Stock turnover much? That's a style that ages well, but I highly doubt they did that on purpose.
