Okay, I've now tried this one twice. I love IPAs and that's pretty much all I drink. I had Two Hearted Ale a couple months ago and don't recall ever being more disappointed by a highly rated IPA. So the other day I saw one in the store and decided to give it another try thinking maybe I had an old one or just an off day. Same result, mostly. I guess I can say it was slightly better this time, but not much. I did note the bottled date this time and it was 3/18/2015. Is this one of those IPAs you need to drink right away? It just tastes like a hopped up lager to me.

For the record, I love Hopslam.

I had the same experience when I tried it for the first time on tap in DC. I didn't get the hype at all. However, I had my buddy from New York pick me up a month old six pack and it was a completely different experience. I can say it's right up there with sculpin for me as far as shelf ipa's go.

I think it gets a certain amount of cred for being an early staple in the modern craft beer boon. Much like Arrogant Bastard, Pliny, etc.

That said, I only had it for the first time about 3 or 4 years ago and still think it's delicious. Amazing floral and tropical notes without anything being in your face about it. It's a subtle beer. But a damn great one.

Not sure how to respond to that. I've loved it since I first drank it in the late 90's.

I think it is best on draft.

    Maybe you don't like Centennial.

It just didn't have that pop that a good IPA (to me) typically has. This wasn't a drain pour for me, but a good IPA has me wanting more and to keep drinking it. This one I was just kind of hoping to finish it so I could move on to something better.

If I ever find it super fresh (like less than a week) I promise I'll try it again.

And I don't think it's the centennial hops since I like a lot of other beers that use those, including Founders.

I think its just ok, nothing to get overly excited about as many other craft beers are much better.

OP, maybe you are just accustomed to more West Coast style, very hop-forward IPAs. Two Hearted is more balanced, maybe a little more "old school." I love me some SoCal/West Coast IPAs, but I'd still drink Two Hearted regularly if I could get it here.

That's too bad. I love that beer. But there are plenty of other beers for you to enjoy, so drink on. Maybe come back to it in a year or two and you'll think differently. I know I've had that happen to me with a few beers

You aren't drinking the right lagers if you associate lagers with beers that don't "pop."

I've never been too impressed with it, but I have found it to always be a little better on tap. Just not really my kind of IPA I guess.

Don't blame the hype. It's a very good beer. Goes down so well. If you were expecting a whale then that's probably why you were disappointed. It's all in your head.

First time I tried Two Hearted was from a trade back in 06. I thought it was amazing. I still think it's a great beer today, there are just a lot more choices now, so perhaps it doesn't stand out as much.

One of the best single hopped beers out there, Centennial is the pepperoni of hops.

Just because an IPA doesn't contain suspended hop particles doesn't mean it's bad.

OP doesn't get it because OP wasn't drinking it prior to 2009 when these kinds of things were really special, not to mention as @yemenmocha stated, the late 90's.

It's probably the best single hopped beer for me, IMHO. Now that SD gets it regularly, it'll be in my fridge on constant rotation.

I do not care for it either, give me a Sculpin, Racer 5 or Union Jack anytime. Here in NJ I would put Kane, Carton and the lesser known Spellbound ahead of Two Hearted when it comes to IPA's.

Agree with the other comments on how great it is. Its balanced for an IPA. To me perfectly so. But I think the balance is what its detractors dislike.

There is no hype on this beer at all.

It is simply a great IPA.

The problem is getting it fresh.

Remove the hype then ask yourself if it tastes good. I can't get it in MA so whenever I'm in NYC, FLA or SC I drink as much as I can.

Since when is Two Hearted over hyped? This is the beer that made me like hops (after drinking it several times). Now it's a session beer for me. It's rolling a 4.27 on here and I'm not sure you can call anything under 4.5 over hyped.

Yea, it's not hyped, it is just one of the first decent beers in its class. But at this point, there is no reason for me to drink it with all the other stuff out there that is way better.

For the record, I prefer Two Hearted over Hopslam any day and I'm one of those who doesn't understand what you mean by it tasting like a hopped up lager since I don't know what you mean by hopped up and since Celebrator and Prima Pils (or Pilsener Urquell) are so different from each other in ways other than the hops used or how they are used.

That said, I'd suggest your disappointment might possibly be from having Lululin Threshold Shift (LTS) which is often a result of drinking too many beers that depend on using lots and lots of hops and lots of buttering from hops as well.

Try not drinking any IPAs or DIPAs for two weeks. Then if you try the fresh Two Hearted and still find it lacking, it's just not a beer for you and you can move on with your life and focus on other beers.
