I live in so-cal, so wanted to get something to cellar some beer. My parameters are, don't mind spending about $1000-1200 for something that looks nice. 150-200 bottles. I don't have a garage so most likely these will be going in an area next to kitchen/dining room on display, so want it to look decent.

    My choices are

    1. large wine fridge- 160-180 bottle.
    http://www.costco.com/Vinotemp-142-...-Touch-Screen-Controls.product.100079873.html
except probably not that model cause it gets horrible reviews, something similar.
-challenges with that is that to store the bottles upright I probably need to just some custom size wood shelves to handle the weight and so they don't fall out of the sides.
-I shouldn't store bottles on their side right?

    2. freezerless fridge- for 600-800 bucks. this wont look nice in the living room. probably throw it in the office.
    http://www.homedepot.com/p/Frigidai...ss-Refrigerator-in-White-FFRU17B2QW/205556875
-I have to get a temp controller for this right? I cant just cellar beer at the highest fridge temp?
    - is it easy to hook up the external temp controller?

don't really want to do a drop in freezer. those commercial beverage centers off craigslist seem a good way to go, but I guess downside is they won't look good in the house.

any other suggestions. I'd love to do the large wine fridge but not sure I want to deal with the shelving.

Other models I'm considering if I go the wine fridge route are

    http://www.amazon.com/166-Bottle-Ed..._n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin:7061795011

    http://www.beveragefactory.com/wine...82SSR-dual-zone-wine-cellar-refrigerator.html

    - not so sure about the last one being scratch and dent. I can't find that model anywhere else which is weird, only beverage factory sells them. I can get the 5 year warranty for 100 bucks but it seems like from reviews all over the wine fridges break down quite often.

@ramonallones In my opinion, I would go with the freezerless fridge. It is more expensive (I imagine) and you will need a temperature controller, but the wine fridge just doesn't work as well. Nor do they last as long.

When I first bought a storage system I went with a small wine fridge. It is totally dependent on ambient air temperature. In the summer it could not hold the desired temp. Unless you have somewhere cool to store it, plan on it not keeping your bottles at 54 degrees. In addition, my circuit board burned out after four years in my wine fridge. It wasn't a huge deal as I ordered a replacement and installed myself. But most standard fridges/freezers will last longer.

By the way, you might want to consider an upright freezer. They are typically less expensive than freezerless fridges. I have one that I love. I know people worry about their beer freezing, but if you use the digital temp controller, and set it to fail in the off position, you don't have much to worry about. I have lost power three times since I bought my freezer and each time the temp controller returned to 54 when the power came back online.

yeah prob right @dphalpin. I'm prob going to get a fridge with a temp controller. Its actually cheaper that way, but will just hide it in the office. wish I jumped on one at home depot a couple weeks ago as a "special buy". about 375 for a 18 cubic foot white one.

tks for the link above Vikings. I'm not sure if compactapplicance has a warehouse you can visit, but they are only about 15 mintues from me and theres a new brewery I wanted to visit.

are the temp controllers easy to hook up, or you kinda got to hack it?

@ramonallones Easy as can be. You can make it more difficult by drilling a hole to snake the probe through. I just snake mine through the door using duct tape to hold it in place.

This is merely anecdotal (quite a cheap wine fridge) but I had the same issue as you during the summer. I simply could not keep the temperature at a satisfactory level when it was very hot. Mind you I'm talking a small, cheap wine fridge, but I thought I would mention it.

How many beers/bombers can you fit in there, @Vikings1201? That's one of the stronger options I've seen out there.

Currently, it's getting close to being full with around 130+ (bombers, one magnum, 500 ml bottles, cans, etc.) but there's still room left and the shelves can be arranged as needed. The top shelf was cut off but can probably hold ~50 cans on their side.

I keep the fridge on it's highest setting and it seems to keep around 45-48 degrees. I only mentioned that because I wanted to stress it's a fridge and won't reach those temperates (55 degrees) by default.

I can get about 500 beers in the 79in merchandiser. When I do shares its great for people to pick and choose what they want.

I would love to have one of those merchandisers. I'm using a freezerless fridge similar to what ramonallones posted the link to on #2. I replaced the wire shelves with tempered glass. The wire made for some unstable conditions and a few moments of excitement when opening the door. I need to add a temp controller to mine.
