I'll be driving through Montana and Idaho along I-94 and I-90 in two weeks, headed west from Minnesota to Seattle. I'll be traveling with a toddler, so taking my time and making a lot of stops. I've done some reading in the forums here, and checked out beermapping.com, but I'm looking for local recommendations on breweries, taprooms, bars, and the like that I absolutely shouldn't miss along that route. Thoughts? Anyone know if Uberbrew in Billings will be open by around June 13?

Also, if anyone's interested in an IP trade, I could bring along things from Surly, New Glarus, Town Hall growlers, loads of other midwestern beers. Not looking for anything in particular, just semi-limited stuff I can't get here. Hit me up privately if you're interested.

    Thanks in advance!

I'd say a meal and a brew at Firehouse in Rapid City, maybe a brew at Crow Peak in Spearfish, and maybe popping into Blacktooth in Sheridan, WY. And Sanford's Pub and Grub in Sheridan is only about a block or so up from Blacktooth so you could do a meal there, plus they brew one or two of their own there.

You have to stop in Missoula, that's for sure. I can spit on 90 from my apartment and would be happy to take you out. All the breweries in town are within five minutes of 90. I like Draught Works for atmosphere, but Kettlehouse and Bayern are good too. Big Sky is a little different in that there is no seating and you just get free samples, but worth a look while you're here. They've got some specialty stuff for sale there right now like their new Wheatwine, Cream Ale, Double IPA, and maybe their very good Dortmunder. Bluehair might still be for sale there, too.

In Post Falls Idaho there is a great beer store called Enoteca. Lots of stuff you won't find elsewhere out here, some Fantome and Mikkeller, etc.

I'd be happy to grab a brew with you and your kiddo or have you over for a few. The Missoula crew is actually really cool and I'm sure they'd all be on board with it too. Let me know.

OOps; I guess you won't be coming across I90 through MN, SD, and WY. I know there's a few breweries in Billings but not sure where they are since I haven't been to Billings since the craft brew scene took off. Eris is correct about Kettlehouse in Missoula; they do some tasty stuff.

True. For various reasons, I'll be taking the northern route, following I-94 across North Dakota and eastern Montana.

Awesome - thanks for the very helpful info. I'll definitely spend some time in Missoula, though it might end up being the middle of the day on a weekday. I'll get in touch privately and see if we can't meet up for a beer somewhere in town. I've also heard great things about the Missoula crew and beer scene (mostly in the forums here), and wish I had more time to spend there.

Thanks for the tip on Enoteca as well. I always like perusing beer stores on my travels, and it's great to know where the better ones are.

To add to what Eric has said about Missoula, Enoteca, etc. if you find yourself in Spokane, WA, for a night (3 hours west of Missoula on I-90), I highly recommend the Manito Tap House for dinner and brews. 50 taps, all craft, many northwestern and west coast beers to go with popular others from around the country (Avery, Boulevard, Dogfish Head, etc.). They'd blown through 10 kegs in the day and a half before I was last there recently and replaced them all with something different. Taster paddles of 6 beers for $5 is a crazy good deal.

Alan. (Part of the Missoula crew).
