These lists come up often, but I recently had a porter that shook my current list. A friend brought me a porter from Mayflower Brewing, and holy shit. lots of bitter powdered chocolate and amazingness. I had to rethink my best porter list (which is that style I hold close).

    1) Edmund Fitzgerald (it would take more than God to dethrone this)
    2) Mayflower Porter
    3) Founders Porter
    4) Thirsty Dog Old Leghumper
    5) Highland Oatmeal Porter
    6) Slumbrew Square Porter
    7) Deschutes Black Butte

Im wondering If im crazy or whatnot.

I definitely enjoy porters, but for the life of me, all brands taste amazingly similar. Is this my insinuative palate?

Edmund Fitzgerald and Founders Porter is really all I need. But O'Fallon Smoke is awesome. So is Rogue Mocha Porter, but it usually gets no love because it's Rogue.

I need to revisit Smuttynose Robust Porter again because I've always been underwhelmed by it.

Arcadia London Porter is phenomenal, but it's an English-style porter..

My faves are Founders, Mayflower, and Smuttynose Robust. Mayflower Porter is an awesome beer and very sessionable too.

Mayflower Porter is unreal, glad you got a chance to try it. It totally flies under the radar here on the BA forums.

    For me,

    1. Cascade Full-Figured Porter (with figs)
    2. Kulshan Brewery Porter
    3. Deschutes Black Butte Porter

    Imperial/Baltic:

    1. Alaskan Baltic Porter 2009
    2. Smuttynose Big Beer Series Baltic Porter
    3. Elysian Dark o' the Moon (this may be a stout)

Have yet to try some of the previously mentioned porters but am looking forward to trying more from this style.

not crazy, mayflower porter is awesome.

Smuttynose Robust porter has gotta be in there somewhere. Narrangansett porter is a solid winter seasonal as well.

Sam adams holiday porter gets an honorable mention.

I assume we are leaving out baltic porters.

I enjoy Maui Coconut Porter quite a lot. It's with toasted coconut, so a little more earthy than sweet in that sense.

BBC Drayman's Porter is actually very good and holds its own against the other big-gun craft breweries. Highly recommend it if you are in the New England Area. Very affordable too!

Try Flying Dog's Gonzo Imperial Porter if you get a chance (I'm surprised that no one mentioned that yet). Also, I had a Big Eddy Baltic Porter on tap last week without knowing it was a Leinenkugal's brand. I loved it, so blind tasting is always good.

I don't have very much experience with porters (maybe half a dozen) but I really dug CCB's Jose Marti.

can't believe only one person said Anchor Porter! it set the standard for American porters, and rightly so. Crazy good with a few drops of your favorite whiskey too.
