1. Ten Fidy
2. Dark Horse Plead the Fifth
3. Founders IS
Santa's little helper and Mikellar George are great bold stouts.
I also want to mention Omnipollo Agamemnon but it has maple syrup added. Though I don't doubt some of the beers mentioned have sugar added to them.
Kane Silent Nights is definitely one of if not my favorite in that style! However, something attainable for you would be Founders Imperial Stout or Stone IRS.
edit - Oh and of course Ten Fidy!
From what I've had, my top three would be:
North coast old rasputin, bells expedition, oscar blues ten fidy, dark horse plead the fifth aaand fulton worthy adversary would be my top five
Many great ones already mentioned but one I'll add is Jackie O's Dark Apparition. An RIS milkshake. Get that distro'd to IL pronto.
That's not an IRS, but that's ok- I think it's better . I'd take a well-made Foreign Extra Stout over an IRS any day.
Expedition, Old Rasputin and Siberian Knight.
Sierra Nevada's Narwhal doesn't get enough love, so my vote goes to it.
It's already been said, but Cigar City's Marshal Zhukov takes the cake for me.
The blind tasting is the way to go. For me in the Midwest all of the most well known RIS are easily accessible. Get some friends together to purchase each a four pack and let the conversation begin. That is what beer advocacy is really about. Great times.
Founders Imperial Stout.
For readily available stouts.....If you like to feel the hops, Old Rasputin. For a smooth, creamy, chocolatey version, Brooklyn Black Chocolate. (no chocolate by the way).
Bell's Expedition or Oskar Blues's Ten Fidy.
Surly Darkness & Stone RIS
Old Rasputin on Nitro if your local bar carries it
Nationally: Even more Jesus
Locally: LSD from 2nd shift
Founders. Perfect Imperial stout
Exactly the 3 I was gonna mention; looks like they came up a lot in this thread, and for good reason. If I had to pick just one, probably the expedition.
There are a lot of great ones out there, but you certainly can't go wrong with Expedition. So much the better if you can find it with a year on it.
Vlad the Inhaler (Burley Oak Brewery), then BCBS. If you want something you can (almost) always get, I'd say Ten Fidy.
Another vote for Founders Imperial Stout.
Bell's Expedition Stout
Drinking a 2012 Brooklyn Black Chocolate stout. Great beer and one of the best prices out there. There is NO Chocolate in this beer.
Big Black VooDoo is also amazing AND comes in 12oz now
Lots of great ones out there
Just bought Expedition stout but not tried it yet.
Expedition and Zhukov, plus the classic, Wells Courage.
Adjunct Professor by Sante Adairius
Griffith J Griffirth by Highland Park
Bells 30th Anniversary
Great Divide Yeti
I'm going to throw Avery's Czar into the arena. Delicious when fresh. Damb fucking great with a year+ on it.
Worthy Adversary certainly deserves a mention. Better than Darkness IMHO. But IMHO Bells ended this conversation with 30th. I could drink that shit every day.
To me it's a toss up between Stone IRS and Dark Horse Plead the 5th. For availability and taste
Anastasia is still my favorite and the percentage of BA's who have had it is microscopic. I like it that way
Narwhal and Santa's Litter Helper
Stone IRS, Old Raspy, and Yeti.
I know i'm really going out on the limb here...
in that order.
Great Divide Yeti
Cigar City Marshal Zhukov
Many of the others mentioned here are good as well, but these two take the cake for me.
