Second. Those are classics.
Never had or heard of old chub and found it at walgreens on the way home....awesome stuff
Founders 'Backwoods Bastard'
Smuttynose 'Scotch-Style Ale' (Big Beer Series)
Dark Horse 'Scotty Karate'
Oskar Blues 'Old Chub'
Brasserie de Silly's BA Scotch Silly. Scotch Ale from Belgium
Alesmith BA Wee Heavy
Alesmith Wee Heavy
Ba Big Sound
2 years of Dirty Bastard
Leiny Wee Heavy
Tranquair Jacobite - decent
Claymore - decent
Skullsplitter is great. Belhaven and McEwans are very good, but I haven't had them in over 10 years.
Gaelic ale is a red ale
I really want to try some Scotty Karate and Skull spliter, I just picked up a Scotch de Silly and Claymore so we'll see how they are.
Backwoods and Sam Adams Scotch Ale.
Guadalupe Brewing Co Scotch Ale
no joke, id drink it over Alesmith Wee Heavy, Backwoods Bastard, Old Chub and Claymore anyday
Alesmith Wee heavy!
Coopers was my first real craft beer experience--I won't tell you how young I was.
I'll put Backwoods Bastard up here again just because it's so good. I think Leinenkugel's Big Eddy Wee Heavy should also be mentioned. It doesn't get the greatest ratings, but I had a year old bottle and it surprised the hell out of me. It might slightly edge out Dirty Bastard in my opinion.
In the PAC NW, Black Raven Splinters, and both Fat scotch and Big Woody from Silver are my choice, cant wait to try the Founders duo, likely this Summers trip to see the parents in Packerland, all the mid west greats 3F, Bells, New Glarus, CW , possibly some Surly too. cant wait!
Yonger's No. 1.
Some great beers mentioned. Robert the Bruce is worthy of consideration.
Big shout to Steel Toe Wee Heavy, I hope they make it again.
But Highland's Tasgall Ale deserves to be mentioned.
I'll add Arcadia's Loch Down to the discussion. I had a pint of it with breakfast pizza at the brewery this morning. Yum!
New England Brewing Company Wet Willy
When in Asheville, try French Broad's Wee Heavy...
Had one at Thirsty Thursday for the Tourists game last week. Wee Heavier is definitely top 3 for me, but maybe that just cause its local and readily available lol. Also Old Chub is great. Scotty Karate is nice too. Backwoods Bastard is probably my favorite though.
A real endorsement of Scotch Ale..."not so bad...and horrible"?
Backwoods Bastard is my #1 for sure.
Old Chub and Dirty Bastard share the consolation prize.
Many mentioned Scotty Karate, but I really did not care for that too much.
Haven't had a lot in this style sadly but,
Founders Backwoods Bastard
Founders Dirty Bastard
Oskar Blues Old Chub
Another good one is Monday Night's Drafty Kilt.
Grimm Brothers did a barrel aged brett wee heavy that was phenomenal. That definitely gets my vote. Really hoping I can try some Backwoods Bastard now that I live in Founders distribution zone.
And for Scottish Ales....definitely Odell's 90 Schilling.
I'm gonna agree with Old Chub as solid and readily accessable, but I'll throw in Clown Shoe's Ride the Lion.
Railbender! I love it So darn good. I don't see it mentioned and I am about go look it up. Scottish style ale that's what it says on the label.
Thirsty Dog's Wulver is on par with Backwoods in my opinion. OP, if you're close to Ohio or Northern Kentucky, it's relatively easy to find, even now after being out for a few months. The price point is steep though, $22-$24 a 4-pack.
A few extra to add that I've enjoyed:
Monday Night Drafty Kilt
Ommegang Cup o Kyndnes
Meantime Scotch Ale
My favourite is Black Isle's Scotch Ale. Has a lowish rating for some reason. I'm from the UK and really like this style. It is so spot on for the style.
One of my favorite styles - Lake Louie Warped Speed Scoth Ale is tops on my list, and their Louies Reserve Scotch Ale is superb as well.
Othe favorites are 3Floyds Robert the Bruce, Old Chub and Scotty Karate.
I wish New Glarus would do a proper Scotch Ale or Wee Heavy
Backwoods Bastard and Dirty Bastard are both great. Also, Orkney's Skull Splitter and Three Floyds' Robert the Bruce are pretty damn good.
wulvers isn't getting any love in this forum? the best in my opinion followed by backwoods.
Just found a bottle of Ride the Lion at my local bottle shop. Pretty excited to try it
I have to say in my experience FOUNDERS Dirty Bastard and also Moylan's Kilt Lifter although it is a whiskey, if that is okay with your palette. Enjoy.
What about Thirsty Dog Wulver !?! I freakin love that beer
Traquair House Ale
Belhaven Wee Heavy
Founder's Dirty Bastard
Alesmith Wee Heavy
Samuel Adams Wee Heavy
Smuttynose Scotch Ale
