If you ever get to Montreal, look for MacKroken Flower, an excellent Scotch ale. You can find it in a Depanneur( convenience store). Also, Cambridge Brewing Bannatyne ale is excellent, available in the Boston, MA area.

Loved this year's smutty scotch ale. 50% in red wine barrels

I caved a little while back and bought a bottle of the barrel-aged MacKroken, the one aged in mead barrels. Haven't cracked it open yet, but I'm looking for any excuse. Just don't want to have to drink it by myself; it'd likely knock my ass out! It's also expensive, almost 20 bucks a bottle...

Isn't that an "Old Ale" though? Not certain on the exact differences there, so I hope this comment doesn't provoke a shitstorm :grinning:

Worried about that when I posted. Dont even care, this thread made me fondly remember curmudgeons better half, and I love it for that.

Best Non BA - Alesmith Wee Heavy and Old Chubb

Best BA - although I love Backwoods Bastard and start to get the shakes anytime my supply dips below 10 bottles it's not the most complex.

I drank them at a blue grass festival in Lyons over the summer for 3 days straight!

Not the ones actually brewed in Scotland. Historically Scotch Ale contained only one type of malt: standard pale malt.

Try Equinoxe Du printemps from Dieu Du Ciel - Montreal Microbrewery. It's not aged in barrels (as far as I know), but it does have maple syrup in its taste profile and is one of the best scotch ale's I've ever had

I agree. Peat smoke is highly phenolic. Some were confused a long time ago by yeast phenolics that can be confused as smokey. The guy who thinks caramalized malt tastes smokey should find some and chew on it, not smokey.

Or a dram of Laphroaig. If that doesn't help them understand what peat tastes like then nothing will.

One quote I like is from the homebrewing community. Someone judged a beer made with a high % (50?) of peated malt. "It smelled like an open grave".

I love the style! Belhaven's Wee Heavy was the first beer that made me say," holy sh*t, that's good!"
