I've recently come to the conclusion that bourbon barrel old ales slightly beat out lambics as my favorite style of beer. I'm looking for more of this category to try so if you know of any more beyond the ones listed below please share. Looking for bottled versions or currently available draft versions with to-go growlers so I can try and track them down.

Bruery Anniversary series (Papier, Coton, Cuir, Fruet)
    Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel 4th Dementia
    Goose Island Imperial Brown Goose
Hair of the Dog Adam from the Wood
Hair of the Dog Cherry Adam from the Wood
Founders Old Curmudgeon (I know it's technically maple bourbon barrels but whatever)
Karl Strauss 23rd Anniversary Bourbon Barrel Old Ale

I've had these and enjoyed them all and all but the last two on this list are in my top 20 of all time favorite beers.

North Coast Old Stock Cellar Reserve comes to mind. Pricy, but outstanding.

Great Divides Barrel Aged Hibernation, aged in Whiskey Barrels, not Bourbon. Never had it myself, but word around the water cooler is that its a good one.

I know you said bourbon, but I have to throw the JW Lees' Harvest Ale cask series up here only because I'm a serious JW Lees fanboy. Barrel-aged English barleywines/old ales are my favorite style as well.

Black Biscuit is an excellent old ale although I think it may just be maple, rather than maple/bourbon barrels. Not sure.

Also, Mammoth makes an old ale called, "Charleywine" which I believe is bourbon barrel aged and they also made a sour version last year. I didn't think either was really that great but you may like the beers more than I did.

Isnt regular Curmudgeon Oak barrels and Better Half is Maple Barrels?

Yeah - as far as I know, Curmudgeon is just plain oak barrels and Better Half is the maple-bourbon barrels.

Now, for the OP, I guess the question is, is it the bourbon character or the oak character he likes?

Sorry, meant to put Better Half in my post but slipped on that. Although, I think some vintage of Old Curmudgeon (06 maybe?) was maple bourbon barrels. I believe I read that one time on the description of Old Curmudgeon over on the other site one time.

I really don't have much to add except I echo this sentiment. However, since having it every other old ale Ive tried has been a let down. Still chasing that BB4D high!

Also, even regular 4 D is outstanding.

I'm in agreement OP. BA Old Ales are probably one of my top three favorite beers. I don't think BA Batch 9000 is listed as an Old Ale, but it's very similar to a lot of what is listed in this thread. That and it's worth the high asking price. Great beer and worth tracking down.

Alesmith BA Decadence 2010 came out this year. Decadence is a different style each year, but the 2010 is an old ale.

yep, stellar beer! any still kicking around stores though? pretty sure 2009 is the most recent vintage, i haven't seen any on shelves around here in a while (although i haven't really been looking). you'd think north coast would roll out a new batch already...

I've had an apple brandy aged version at the CCB tasting room. Delicious as hell, though really you could stick dirty dishwater in a Laird's apple brandy barrel and it would taste amazing, IMHO.

Gonna be honest here. I'm a huge Old Ale/BB Old Ale fan. Founders Backwoods bastard continues to span across three styles for me. Some of me tastes Old Ale, some tastes English Barleywine and only a tiny bit of me tastes Scotch Ale. It's such a great brew, and if you dig Olds you'll certainly love it.

Firestone Walkers DDBA is another that blurs the lin of style for me as well. Very similar beer to Backwoods.

While technically not an Old Ale, Melange 3 is fantastic. Similarly, Lost Abbey Angel's share deserves mention.

You need to try the Karl Strauss 23rd again, less than a year out, it's already aging wonderfully (though not in the Kuhnhenn BBA stratosphere, tho).

Black Biscuit is a hybrid Old Ale/Baltic Porter, at least that was the description I believe I had read from Founders in the past. Other people will call it a stout. Either way it is not your typical Old Ale, it is very delicious either way.

Black Biscuit is aged in Maple Bourbon barrels.

IMO, BA Hibernation lacks the character that some of these other beers mentioned have. Stranahans is a rather mild whiskey on it's own, so the character it gives to a rather thin bodied beer isnt much anyways. And it's over priced.
