Right, but Rare also sat in the barrels for 2x as long as regular BCBS. I don't disagree with you; I'm just saying that is part of it too.

Sure, but for third-fill I think the difference is more subtle.

I think most brewers use second-fill barrels because the barrel contributions get less potent with each use.

Regardless, I'm looking forward to this and consider it good news. Why trade for a fading King Henry when you can have what will probably be a better, easier-to-get beer?

Not too hard to tell who is sitting on some bottles of Rare and King Henry.

It seems like you were pretty positive it was bcbs barrels 3 months ago!

"Brett Porter confirmed for me on Thursday that they are indeed using spent BCS barrels for this beer."-this was posted 3/10 in this thread.
Also, maybe you should elaborate on your post before you start saying I am being a dick for your vague post. I took your post to saying "see, they are making bc barleywine!"

They also lied about Rare never being produced again; they've released BCBS TWICE since then!

BCBS '07 was 11% and '12 is 15%, they don't even use the same bourbon barrels (no idea on aging times).

If such different beverages are regarded as the same beer, it is fine to say Bourbon County Barleywine is similar to King Henry.

I know people hate when I say this, but I'll say it once more: the people rushing to claim a difference are worried about their trade value. Right from the beginning people have been fighting the idea that it might be aged in used BCBS barrels, and now the argument is that the beer is different for other reasons. You'll be dragged kicking and screaming to the idea that this beer might actually be similar to KH and just as good.

I agree--I'm guessing (and hoping) Bourbon County Barleywine will be similar to King Henry, just as BCBS Rare is similar to BCBS. My point is that it's silly to claim King Henry is being produced again; it's like claiming Rare is released every year (because it's similar to BCBS).

    This..

I could care less about perceived trade value or anything of the sort. Fact of the matter is I hope it is just as good, but the argument that they said they'd never make King Henry again, they never said "We will never make a barleywine and age it in used BCBS barrels again"

And I am pretty sure the difference between regular bourbon barrels and PVW 23 barrels matters. If not, then why do people differentiate between Rare and BCBS or any of the other imp stouts that have a PVW 23 variation.

As I mentioned in post #304 above, I don't think those differences are as significant for BCBarleywine.

BCBS and Rare are actually treated differently, but the answer for the others is largely: hype. And again, it remains to be seen if any of those characteristics matter by the time you get to the third fill. The fact that almost no one uses third-fill barrels tells me they don't impart much.

Speculation does not equal fact. Plenty of speculation the other way on that. Just giving the guy props for the scoop on comfirm from GI. Put your gun away, Rick!

Agree with everything being said. I think this will be very close, if not equal to, KH. I doubt the PVW 23 barrels make much of a difference, though the aforementioned length of time Rare sat in those barrels could matter....maybe?

In either case the barrel is on its second use for the barleywine which should diminish the disparity for some of these effects, no?

I think the distinct taste of rarity will be absent...but I can't wait to drink many of these...hoping distro will be similar to that of '12 BCBS.

Good one. Hype should be there though, also one of my favorite flavors.

Why do people get so riled up that others don't agree with their opinion? Whatever you choose to believe, it's not the same beer, otherwise it would be named as so. It's pretty damn ignorant to imply that those who see the differences between the two are the ones hoarding all the King Henry.
