Wife to be is planning her bridal shower on 4/20, so I'm looking to take a little day trip to SD as an excuse to get out of the house. Given that I'll most likely have more people with me than I can reasonable fit into one car and dont want to deal with organizing a sufficient number of DD's, I'm looking into taking the Amtrak.

Ideally I'd like to avoid making the almost two hour trek to Old Town/Downtown, so I'm hoping there are some cool tick's to be had in the north county area, ideally within walking distance (20-30 min) of either train station. Short cab rides (~$15) are also a possibility.

Anything out there that fits these paramaters?

    Bueller? Bueller? Bueller?

Not sure if serious... but Pizza port Solana Beach is directly across the street from the train station

A new place called Culture Brewing is right by the Solana Beach station, if you want to mix in some variety. Pizza Port Carlsbad is near the Carlsbad train station, which is between Solana Beach and Oceanside. I'm not really sure there is a beer reason for stopping in Oceanside, though there might be a few places there worth a stop.

If the Sprinter were still running, you could have disembarked in Oceanside and took that over to Vista and have been near some places, but it is offline for a while.

Super serious, and didn't actually know this. That's actually pretty perfect. Anything else nearby?

I've only been to PP OB, as most of my time spend in SD is in the downtown/MB area given that's where the future inlaws live.

PP San Clemente (my favorite) is about a mile from the Pier Station.

Amtrak doesn't stop in Carlsbad. Only Oceanside, Solana Beach, Old Town and Santa Fe Station Downtown San Diego.

Oceanside has the Stone Company Store and Breakwater Brewery within a mile.

Although a bit far to walk, Union Kitchen & Tap in Encinitas is a very short cab ride from Pizza Port Solana Beach.

You would be better off disembarking the Amtrak in Oceanside and taking the $5.00 Coaster train down the coast and stopping in either Downtown Carlsbad Village or Encinitas.

Anyone know when Jeff Bagby is going to get his brewery up and running in Oceanside?

So many awesome suggestions, thanks everyone!

As it stands I'm probably looking at solana beach, though may audible to Oceanside depending on whether or not there's anything awesome going on at the stone company store tap/growler fill wise that weekend. For the locals, if we do hit Oceanside, any places you recommend to grab a bite to eat?

I don't think the plans are approved yet and the tenant improvements haven't started so it would be late Summer at best.

I would go to the Encinitas Ale House rather than Union, right across the street and a good tap selection. Hell, they usually have Founders on tap, I'm not sure how. But it's not Amtrak. I think Solana Port is a good choice. In Oceanside, take a short cab to The Flying Pig for killer food and a decent tap selection.
