You, sir, win the award for 'post in this thread that most quickly made me google the denotation of a word'. And, yes sir, you choose the right word.:grinning:

I, however, would like to talk about the contotations of the name. Garphish gives me both images of Garfield reaching into a fish tank, and unshowered Phish fans. The smell of both, I assume, is similarly bad.:grimacing:

Admittedly, I had to google it myself. I knew the word existed, but I didn't know it off the top of my head.

This isn't a new one this year, but I'm curious when Bub's Brewing in Winowna opened?

I'm honestly not sure as this is the first I've heard of it - but according to a quick Google search it's not an actual brewery, but they do offer "rebranded" beers brewed by other breweries.

Yes, regionally brewed, quasi-generic (c.f. "Schell's Amber Ale") beers given house names.

I visited the tied house (and the old brewery in its antique mall phase) not long after word of a new brewery going in there had made the rounds in 2007, but that new brewery plan never came to pass, and the old caves and a portion of the original site were sold, last year.

As I recall, Bub's Brewing Co was originally a tied house associated with Peter Bub Brewery, which closed in 1973. As the brewery was situated at the base of the Sugar Loaf bluff, it is often called "Sugar Loaf Brewery."

Haven't been on here in a while - the beers were not my favorite. The "pale ale" was a really dark caramel color, more like an ESB or something along those lines. They had a scotch ale that was decent. And another beer they just called "mocha" that I'm assuming was a coffee porter, that one was pretty good. My one complaint from the business side is that I understand they aren't going to name the beers. So they'll have IPA, Pale Ale, Mocha, etc. on tap. I'm not sure how that's going to work when they have their second IPA on or what, maybe that one gets called IPA #2?

The inside of the brewery is pretty nice though. Remodeled space. New floor, new bar, some nice TV's, big windows. My neighbors joined the 'mug club' thing and they were just happy to get out of the house and into a place downtown that didn't have pulltabs or vomit on the floor. (If you've ever been to Jack's or Moola's downtown Jordan you'll understand)

I'm pretty confident they will make decent stuff. It may not be a craft beer nerds wet dream, though. From talking to the brewer and friends who are closer to him, I gather that he prefers to make German style beers and lagers. Not the northeast IPA or BA stout kind of beer that a lot of us love. It will take a bit of time to dial in the beers, as it does everywhere, of course. I'd be pretty happy if I could walk down and buy a good, local pint of doppelbock though. He has won a number of awards, including big contests, but I recall reading that one award was for a kolsch. Maybe it's just me but I don't seek out a new brewery to try their award-winning kolsch.

They did another member only night last night and as I understand it will be soft open for the Jordan Dazzle parade on Saturday. I'll try to remember to update here once things are rolling a little smoother.

What I deduced from the Oliphant thread is there are a large number of beer drinkers that are as competent at reading beer labels as an actor in an infomercial. Breweries with naming like this need to exist, so those people don't wither into nothing as a result of alcohol withdrawal.

Dangerous Man doesn't name a lot of their beers and they do pretty well. Oh, and they also have a Kölsch on tap right now...

I think he was referring to the Pale Ale, or Hoppy/ malty/ dark names that they are going to use. Dangerous Man does give a majority of them names, if even chocolate milk stout with somewhat of a description. It's frustrating that new breweries think everyone is an idiot, I mean Hoppy, Not Hoppy, dark, red, light are not names of beer, those are adjectives, but I guess when I open a brewery I'll have fun naming beers and then explaining to idiots what they are using the previous adjectives.
PS Roets beers were "clean". I say that in that I didn't detect anything off other than the recipes were pretty bland. Light on most things including flavor. Should do well...

Technically, light and dark ARE names of beer. Helles and Dunkel. But anyway, a lot of beer names aren't very instructional anyway. As someone new to craft beer if I were to see merely "Surly Bender" on a beer menu I'm going to know nothing about the beer from that. So, like you said I would presume the staff at Roets will be able to answer questions about the expectations behind the beers just like any other brewery has to do.

I've seen and heard of worse names that Garphish. Let's hope they get their water from elsewhere, though.

If I'm thinking of the right place the owner brewed Timmy's Kolsch at Town Hall a few years back which was fabulous. This place with the emphasis on lagers, etc is much needed in my opinion....just a long drive out there from East Metro.

That sounds right - the contest I was referencing was something where if you won you got to brew the beer at a brewery. And his name is Tim Roets so we're probably thinking of the same fella.

We chatted briefly, he seems like a smart guy. Hopeful they make awesome stuff!
