    Because they are not as roasty as a porter and they work well with american citrus hops, porters do not.

    They have at least one out there-2013 Mission Anniversary Ale brewed by Firestone exclusively for Trader Joe's. 8.5% $2.99/22oz. This would easily be a $7/$8 bottle if it had Firestone's name on it. At this price, I drink it for breakfast and brush my teeth with it. Now I guess I have to go buy a couple of cases...

    Just moved to Michigan and having my first Short's Bellaire Brown..friggin delicious.
    Fat Squirrel is prob the best brown I have had besides Sam Smith

    I like brown ales because they are smooth and can be very tasty. For me i got to say i enjoy a moose drool every now and then.

    They are great food beers. Full Sail's Pub Series Brown Ale was great with spicy Indian food.

    update: I went to Beers of the World and bought several Brown Ales to taste and review. I grabbed single bottles and this is what was available.

    Brooklyn Brown
    Dundee Nut Brown
    Shipyard Brewer's Brown
    Captain Lawrence Brownbird
    Ithaca Nut Brown

    I've reviewed the Brooklyn so far.

    okay, so I have drank and reviewed 5 Brown Ales in the past 24 hours. Here are my scores for all the Brown Ales I have reviewed on BA. I do think I have come to realize that Brown Ales have a place in my beer drinking regimen but that place is in cooler months only. This has been a nice experiment and I am glad I started this thread.

    Nice! I have heard it said the palate needs 17 tries of something before we can really write off the taste as not one we like.

    My only comment is how sad it is that Newcastle nowadays does totally suck. Back in the day it was so much a better beer, it isn't even a shell of its former self now, it's an imposter.

    The whole crux of this argument is that taste is subjective. Some people, by the looks of it, quite a lot of people, prefer the 'simplicity' of a Brown. Sometimes that's what makes a beer more appealing and enjoyable. Extremely malted beers can be off-putting, just like extremely hopped. At the end of the day you like what you like, I'm just glad you're not running a brewery

    More sessionable? Id rather drink a scotch ale any day over a brown ale though. IMO scotch ales are just amped up versions of brown ales

    More porters than Brown ales are on the market. If you find a great brown ale brewed commercially though let me know. I do an imperial brown with coffee that will beat any porter anyday.

    I've yet to find a Porter that I liked and Scotch Ales don't seem to be my favorite style but I really enjoy Brokklyn Brown. Taste is subjective and if you don't like them, stick with what you do like.

    just had a Goose Island Nut Brown after a Chili dinner. it seemed to balance the spiciness very well and was a very nice experience. Maybe Brown Ales will be my winter time after dinner beer? The Goose Island Nut Brown stands head and shoulders above the 10 Brown Ales I have tasted, even above the Sam Smith's and I probably will stop buying other examples of this style and just stick with this one.

    at first you confused me because you typed your response inside the quote brackets.

    the idea of drinking a Scotch Ale in July is pretty repulsive. the idea of drinking a Pilsener is January is so unappealing. There are only 3 styles I would drink year round, regardless of season; English Pale Ale, IPA and Vienna Lager.

    I just can't get on board with that idea- and maybe you've been drinking the wrong Pilsners if you only associate them with hot weather. They really can be great beers all on their lonesome, showcasing superior malt and hops- and, honestly, it's not that far of a gap between a Vienna and a great Czech Pils. If you can find it give Zatec a shot, I'm starting to see them all over the place these days- it's got a rich, almost toasty malt quality.

    I happen to love Brown Ales...My two favorite are Sierra Nevada Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale and Bell's Best Brown Ale!!!
