The only beer I'll make the calls for is Abraxas and Bourbon County and its variants. I stopped bothering with KBS and other similar beers a few years ago because it's just not worth it.

When making a few calls I'll be sure to be as respectful and friendly as possible since I'm sure they get calls about that same beer constantly and it's gotta be annoying as hell. I'll also utilize beermenus.com to find places in the area that may have it so that I don't need to bother calling. Basically I'll try to have as little phone to store contact as possible since I can't even imagine how annoying it is to get those calls every day while they're trying to do their job on top of it.

While on a business trip to Chicago a week after the BCBS release, I walked into a store and talked with someone at the register. After a few minutes I figured it was worth a shot asking if they had any BCBS variants. They were nice enough to give me their last bottle of Propietors. I had no idea that they even carried BCBS when I went there and it was a long shot, but it worked out. Regardless, it was just in casual conversation where it wasn't bothering them.

I guess the main lesson is that if you're going to call a bunch of different places, don't be a dick.
