I have carried bottles in checked luggage many times without issue, know how to wrap them just fine. But the one time I tried doing the same with cans, let's just say my clothing was pretty hoppy. Half the cans developed micro leaks around the pop top.

I am bring some Surly cans on a business trip to do an IP trade. Any tips to successfully ship them via checked luggage? Or is this a dumb-assed idea that should only be tried by dumb-asses?

Thanks in advance for any pointers!

I have never had an issue putting cans in my checked bags, and have done so a half dozen times. I usually put 2 cans per zip lock bag and then put those in a giant one so they stay together. Knock on wood, no issues...

    Good luck

Edit: standard checked bag cushioning and precautions apply. Lots of bubble wrap!

I've never done cans but maybe do the same thing I do with my bottles and put them in ziplock bags or something that is not your clothing?

I suggest you put them in your carry-on & try to smuggle them past security. Or put on really big boots & stuff them in the toes. Or, I know you could put them in that Heizenberg goatee of yours.

I brought cans in my last trip with no real padding, but after reading this, I'm going to zip-lock them for safety the next few times.

    Doable. Ziplocs a necessity.

I have put many cases of Heady in checked baggage, never a casualty, never special wrap .

Edwin, the goatee is no more, meaning your post meets your typical standard of uselessness.

I have checked in cans numerous times without any issues. As a few have mentioned above, I always put them in ziplock bags just to be safe.

Thanks to all for responses. Can't believe I never thought of ziplocs.

Brought a 4 pack of gandhi-bot back on my last trip. Used a Seal line bag and they showed up on the other side just fine. A little expensive, but a good investment if you do a lot canoeing, kayaking, beer hauling, etc.

I transported a few Surly packs in my checked luggage earlier this year with no problems. I think the secret may be to leave them in packs and wrap clothing around the bricks.

I brought back some Tallgrass 8-bit and Buffalo Sweat and only wrapped them up in clothing. TSA checked my bag and did not do a good of rapacking. Ingot home to find one of the cans had been pierced by a cork and caged bottle in my bag. Good news, it was not the stout. Lesson learned, keep cans and bottles separate. Ziplock bags are not a bad idea either.
