Greetings... we have friends that live in Brussels that will be visiting us here in the States in April. The husband asked if there's any beers I would like for him to bring with him. I told him "anything Cantillon". I gave him a list of several beers, as well as the link to the Cantillon BeerAdvocate.com page listing all of their beers. I also asked him to pick me up an ecru green t-shirt and 44 cl tasting glass. They'll have plenty of room to bring beers, as they plan on bringing 2 empty suitcases with them to fill up with clothes they buy here in the States (they have 3 kids that will be traveling with them as well).

Is he better off looking for stuff at beer stores, or supermarkets, or right at the brewery? He doesn't live too far from Grand Place, so it isn't too bad of an inconvenience for him to go to the brewery.

I'll be reimbursing him for any beers, shirts, glasses, etc. he is able to find. Just out of curiosity, how much do bottles generally cost at the brewery and/or at other locations? Are they only sold in 750ml size, or do they also bottle smaller sizes (330 or 250)?

Thanks so much for the help!

Since he is in Brussels the best place is always the brewery. The other stores that would have it are tourist rip off shops. Most bottles at the brewery cost just under 10 Euro. The same beers a mile up the road in a tourist shop is twice that. Most of the bottles are 750s; however the Kriek, Rose de Gambrinus, and Gueuze are also available in 375. I personally have not seen any of the others in the 375.

Thanks @SStein ! I will pass along that information to our friends. He likes/loves beer, but isn't obsessed with it like many of us on BA are.

My fiance (who was born/raised in Brussels) and I visited there back in April 2011. At the time, I was barely starting to get into "better beer". I had stopped drinking the light beers, but only ventured into Guinness and Stella just briefly. Oh well... hopefully another time, soon.

    Thanks again!

If you have him go to Cantillon now. St Lamvinus and Iris are available now.

They also had Lou Pepe Gueuze and Vigeronne.

    Thanks @trevorjk !

Unfortunately, I may be at the mercy of his busy schedule. He works 10-12 hours a day, and he and his wife run a salon as well. So, he may only be able to go if/when he's in the area during the day for work, or maybe on a Saturday. They won't be coming here for another 10 weeks or so. I imagine he'll wait until close to then before trying to stop by.

You may want him to go now, as often the higher tier beers usually sell out fairly quickly. This way he has some and can always go back later. In a few months there will be another good release or 2, and he can get those as well.

@belvedere86 - Thanks! May I ask what they did have available? Do you know if there's more shirts/glasses actually at the brewery shop than they list on their website? I know a lot of the breweries over in the States usually have a lot more than is listed on their websites, since it's such a hassle to keep up with it all.

    Thanks again!

Thanks! I do like that glass better than the 44cl one that I told my friend about.

If you don't hafta HAFTA have one-off limited things, your friend can get the gueuzes -- and not just from Cantillon -- at a few specialists and shops at very small markups. For example the Cora in Anderlecht and ABS (open on Sunday) in Winksele have 'em for markups of less than 50 cents a bottle. Otherwise, send 'em to the brewery, let them have the fun experience, and be grateful for whatever they bring. Make a fan o 'em and they'll want to go all the more.
