Disclaimer! I used to work in the wine and spirits dept. here. That being said, my man in charge of the craft need here is killing it. Although some distributors in the area are not willing to bring the big boys, STONE etc. and limited releases are few and far between, there is new life here. An already large amd diverse selection of craft beers has been bolstered by the addition of a new distributor, AbuNawas. The Carroll HY-Vee Wine and Spirits now.boasts a lineup to rival Cyclone Liquors in Ames, and any HY-Vee in Des Moines or Ames.
Selections include: Mikeller, Epic, Stillwater,Jester King and Jolly Pumpkin. Personally I had a JP OBO De Calabaza tonight w my wife and enjoyed am Epic Hop Zombie. The Hop Zombie is as good,I'd not better than any west coast IPA you can get. There are a myriad of killer beers to choose from in my hometown now, Imperial Biscotti Break, Mikeller Black Hole,It's Alive, I Beat You,etc. and a ton of Epic hop generic beers, as well as sours and wild beers.
Kudos to the staff here for bringing the selection to the folks who want to drink good quality craft. If you're in the area or don't want to make the trip to the city, stop bye and see what you cam find. Zach is the guy to talk to Nd I always have a few homebrews tapped and/or bottled, you can message me as well. Well done sir, I am sure the area will respond well to the awesome choices we now.have.

And still getting better everyday. Best you can get in the West Central part of the State without going to Ames, Des Moines, or Omaha.

Ran ass-backwards into $4.00 sixers of Founders Pale Ale and $5.00 sixers of Dirty Bastard there this winter. Couldn't f-ing believe my eyes. I've still got some of the Dirty's, I bought so much.

Amen to that. I know Zroc(BA member on here) has been working his ass off trying to get that area more into craft. Anyone close needs to do yourself a favor and stop in. Hell, as far as I know, Fort Dodge doesn't hold a candle to comparing to what is in Carroll. But I also doubt there are any craft nerds in FD...

Hello everyone and thanks for the kind words. I have indeed been working my tail off to get this to happen but I couldn't be happier with how its turning out. What's really helped me out is working with Frederique from Abu Nawas. That man is just as passionate as anyone out there and his beer portfolio literally makes me drool at times. For anyone out there that hasn't been to my store, stop in and see whats going on! I have the full Jolly Pumpkin line, Stillwater, Pretty Things, Jester King, Mikkeller....just to name a few....and I took a slight gamble with this and bought a little on the heavy side so while many stores have been out of some of the highly sought after products, I still have a few sitting around......but its getting down there:grimacing: Next in line is starting to organize a few bottle shares in the area and encourage people to come hangout, talk beer, and build friendships. Once again, ill be working with Frederique to line up a keg of something delicious and encourage some folks to travel out my way and see whats going on. Carroll finds itself in a "dead spot" unfortunately. Were 1hr 30min from dsm and about the same to Omaha and we don't get some of the distribution favors that dsm and council bluffs gets, but im hoping to curve that soon. Id really like to see some folks show up from Omaha/Dsm for the bottle shares and maybe establish some trading partners with some of the local beer advocates that roam the Carroll area....they are out there! Ill be making another order list here soon and hopefully have some new offerings within the next few weeks....stay tuned and thank you!

I've been tempted to make a run up to Carroll, as I have heard about this store. I haven't yet because at that distance DSM and El Bait Shop etc. seem to make more sense (for me). Anyway, keep up the good work!

While I cant rival the tap selection that the Bait shop gets, I can rival the bottles for your own stash!! Shoot me a BM if you like and let me know what your after and ill set some stuff back for you. Ill gladly work with anyone that's willing to make the trip and fill a box. That's what the good ol boys did for me in DSM and Ames when I would make the venture down, so ill pass it right back down the line. Hope everyone starts there week out with high spirits! I think a Maracaibo is in store for this guy tonight:slight_smile: Cheers!

Hello everyone, hope your sunday funday is a good one! Just wanted to give a heads up to everyone/anyone interested that im getting another order from Abu Nawas on Thursday. Some of the highlights from this order include: Upright 4-6-7, Mikkeller Beer Geek Weasel-Its ALIVE agd in Chard brls with mango, Tilquin Geueze and Lambic, De Molen stouts, and To Ol DIPA-Red wine brl aged Trippel. Cant wait to get my hands on these brews!! I also ordered some various hoppy treats for my local hopheads from Frederique and a few other vendors, so if you want to try some new hoppy brews ya gotta move with the quickness. The locals sweep through it rather quickly! Has anyone out been aging any Jolly Pumpkin stuff? Ive been sampling a few bottles that are pushing the 1 year mark and the "funk" seems to be mellowing some and the flavors are becoming more pronounced.....at least to this palate and im enjoying them more then fresh. Today im going to try an EPIC Epicurian: Imp stout w coffee and fig. Havent had this one yet so im kind of excited to pull the trigger finally. Anyways, sorry for the rambling. I love craft beer!! Have a great day fellow BA's!

This is really cool to hear. I'm glad that Hy-Vee is supporting craft beer! I grew up going to Hy-Vee in Maryville, MO. My folks still live there so I always stop in to the liquor store at the Maryville Hy-Vee and almost always find something awesome. They don't have a giant selection, but their offerings are solid and they always have some stuff that would fly off the shelf in other places. The last couple times I've been there they had the latest Stone Enjoy By, and they also still had some Rye-on-Rye sitting on the shelf as well.

So I just came from the store, left with a Open Windows Open Hills Tiger Baby by Mikkeller, Beer Geek Brunch Weasel and a Dangerously Close to Stupid Dbl Ipa. Could have spent a months worth of paychecks easily. The Alive versions are here, Tilquan, and loads of Mikkeller and other insane goodies. I used to travel to Cyclone or Beer Crazy/DSM Hy-Vee's, but other than some big name things we don't get ( ie; Stone, Lips of faith, etc.) there is no better selection in Iowa in my opinion. Clown Shoes, Mikkeller, ToOl, ALL of teh Jolly Pumpkin lineup, Jester King, Stillwater, etc. Stop in and check it out. If anyone is going to make the trip or is around and down for a bottle share, I am in. Sitting on some Russian River beers, a 3 year vertical of BCBS, and tons of random of ofs.

Just finished a bottle share w ZROC from the new shipment. Upright Brewing's Seven, a modern sasion and a killer beer, rivals Saison Dupont, Omnipollo Agamemnon; an Imperial Stout w maple syrup, and Clown Shoes porcine unidragon; american imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels... This Hy-Vee is KILLING it on the craft scene, get it while it is fresh and here, some of this stuff will not last! Can't wait till tomorrow when I can crack the Mikkeller Brunch Weasel and a few variants of the Funkee Star... Thanks ZROC for the share and the effort to bring the culture of incredible craft beers to Iowa, now just work on getting some Toppling Goliath somewhere here on tap.. (impossible?)...

Without having been to this Hy-Vee to compare, it would be tough for me to believe that their beer selection is better than John's Grocery in Iowa City, or Benz in Cedar Rapids.

John's has a better Belgian section than I've seen in almost any store in Wisconsin, and almost every store in Chicago I've been to.

But, I will check it out if I ever make it over that way.

Redblacks, I don't disagree about the Belgian section@ John's and I've never been to the other location. Simply letting people know there is another impressive option out this way.
