because i think customer service is important, who is to say that i only went there for hard to find beer? first impression and new customer acquistion has to mean something.

one of my regular stores i know go to is not the closest to where i live, but i went there for one of these "hard to find beers" and they were accomidiating to someone they never met before, and i along with alot of my friends are now loyal customers..

but again in this age of social media customer service is slowly dying

It's one thing to gouge customers into buying more beer in order to purchase a hyped release, but there is nothing wrong at all when stores prioritize taking care of their regulars first.

It's a simple business decision. Guy A is a regular customer who spends lots of money in your store throughout the year. Guy B comes in once or twice a year only for the allocated stuff. If you piss off Guy B who cares? He won't be back anyway. If you have any extra leftover then it's totally fair game just make sure your repeat customers are taken care of.

I've benefited from being a regular and have been burnt by not being one.

And I'm not condoning being rude or condescending towards non-regulars because that's unnecessary. No need to be a douche because someone is inquiring about a beer.

A lot of times in big box wine stores or supermarkets, there are only 1 or 2 people who actually know that they have a recent limited beer release in stock. You should ask specifically for the beer buyer or beer manager in order to make sure you get the right info.

In a craft beer store they're probably just lying to you.

A good business person will be able to tell if a customer is convertible or not. They get the most bang for their buck by knowing who will be and who won't be when they walk in the door. So they can convert new customers by letting them in on a limited release beer, while keeping the people who will just buy that one beer from having any.

I started going to a beer store regularly because the owner sold me a KBS out of the back the first time I walked into her store. Spent hundreds of dollars there after that, and she would always set aside a bottle of the limited stuff she knew I wanted, so I didn't have to run out there the moment something big dropped. She also told me she knows when people call or walk in just to buy a bottle and split, and she doesn't sell it to them. Sounds like smart business to me.

Has she shared the secret on how she can tell the customers apart?

There was no limit. They were putting 2-3 on the shelf at a time, and when it was emptied they were restocking.

From what I've heard, Super Buy Rite in North Plainfield sold out last night by 8:30. As did Buy Rite Union at roughly the same time.

Total Wine in West Orange got it today at $27.99/bottle, 1 bottle limit. I happened to be there when Hunterdon delivered but didn't see how many cases they received. Got my one.

My guess is by talking to them? The ones who walk in and immediately ask for a certain limited beer that just came out without paying any attention to anything on the shelves are probably a dead giveaway.

People really aren't that hard to figure out, man.

Call Total Wine around 330: I was told Out of Stock.

Stopped at Cook's around 4 : Sold Out. They had a list and a line at opening. No mention of a list when I called last week.

Wine Warehouse in Voorhees : Sold Out.

It's a really great beer, but the maple is pretty subtle. Still world-class for a BBA stout.

According to some people here, that's just good business and fair to discriminate who they sell to since they know just by looking at someone how much they will buy in the future.
