Nah Abrasive has more malt to me. Abrasive is still awesome!
Part of the appeal and mystique of Heady is that it's so unique- there's really nothing quite like it. Everything about the beer comes together so well.
That being said, the only beer I've had Heady deja vu with was Omnipollo Fatamorgana. I thought the aroma was really similar. The taste was close, but not quite there. Really awesome DIPA.
From the beers I've had, I would have to suggest Another One from Maine Beer Co. While it isn't labeled as a double IPA and nor does it come in tall boy cans, it does clock in at 7%. I thought when I poured it from the bottle that it looked exactly like Heady Topper.
Love me some Gandhi Bot! Pours more like an orange juice though and a lot more citrus. But Heady and Gandhi are both one of my favorites
"Oldsock" is a strange compliment...
I love reading all the comments. Saying Hoptimum tastes like Heady is like saying a hamburger tastes like pizza.
I just had Heady Topper yesterday and not only is it the best DIPA I have had, it's the best beer I have had. Although they are very are both very diferent tasting beers, the only beers I have had that are On a similar level is Pilny the Elder and Lahunitas Fusion 18. With some work, you DNA find Pilny, and I have no idea if Lugunitas will ever make Fusion 18 from the Fusion series again.
This. First thing out of my mouth after the first sip of HD&R was "tastes like conan".
Fresh Surly Abrasive is the closest tasting DIPA I've had to Heady. I haven't had Gandhi Bot yet.
This beer is getting mixed reviews, but it is the closest to HT that I can compare. Now, mind you, I have yet to try Abner or surly, or some others mentioned here. But I get my hands on all the 2IPA's I can, and, to me, this is very, very close.
Pliny is super close. Mongo is pretty close too. Similar hop profiles for sure.
Jai Alai is better. Yeah, I said it.
The closest I have had to Heady would be Double Sunshine which I enjoy a touch better than Heady, and Pliny The Elder which I feel is very comparable in flavor profile, however, the appearance of the two is quite different.
Just tried some fresh Second Fiddle from Fiddlehead and it's right up there with Heady.
I'm surprised at all the Abrasive comparisons in this thread. I find no similarities between the two besides the fact that they both come in a can. I'm not knocking abrasive at all. I love it almost as much as I love heady. Just two very different DIPAs imo. That being said, the only beer that kind of reminded me of heady was Focal Banger (surprise surprise). Two completely different hop profiles so what makes them similar? It's that damn conan yeast!
Two years of this thread? Most IPAs are far more malty, including everything from Stone or Ballast Point. Ignoring the other rare VT beers, or rare MA beers like treehouse I'd say Hopulence from Wormtown and actually, MO from Maine, though an APA. MO smells the most like HT to me and has a similar light malt profile.
Jai Alai was too sweet and sticky when I had it. Maybe a little old?
Deviant Dale ...
Of all the IPA's I've had, regular Jai Alai, Deviant Dale's, and Sixpoint Bengali come the closest IMO.
I found Jai Alai and Deviant Dales to be too malty.
Maybe you impressions of Stone/BP are a bit skewed bc the time it takes to get them in Mass? I have them fresh all the time and don't get so much malt
Whatever is sitting closest to it on the shelf.
Noticing similarities between HT and fresh Wormtowm Be Hoppy. Had them back to back last week.
Do we really need other IPAs to be like Heady to enjoy them? Heady is the best. If there was a decent substitute for it around, it probably wouldn't be the best. Can we just agree that there are a lot of good IPAs out there that stand on their own merits, not because of how much they are like another beer?
I just had a NG Scream and thought the mouthfeel was similar. May have preferred Scream in flavor.
I'm in NC, and I have had Arrogant Bastard bombers that are so (relatively) smooth and sweet, and I've had them where they are so hoppy they almost make my mouth pucker.
I might have to "cellar" some AB's... hmm...
I like these lists because I will probably never get a HT to try, so if I can get close by tasting the ones lsited here that I can get, I will take it.
After having Heady, I would have to say nothing is all that close because something about Heady is weird. No, not weird: different. Heady is very different. By different, I don't necessarily mean better; but I do mean different. Can you dig it?
That said, I'm just happy to live in an area where I can get fresh 4-packs of DirtWolf whenever I want for 8 or 9 bucks. And no, DirtWolf doesn't taste like Heady.
It's possible, although the Enjoy By I had was presumably fresh. I think that Stone tends to use more roasted malts and is using different hop varieties/yeast than The Alchemist. I like a lot of Stone beers, but don't find them similar to HT. Nor is Sculpin, though it is excellent.
The color and malt level is really close. The aroma definitely isn't the same and Be Hoppy is a little more bitter, but it's closer than many.
Focal Banger, The Crusher, The Rapture. Not the same but the closest ive had
Heady is really similar to Heady.
but it's not as good because Heady is the best.
I am not serious.
I'd say Overhead by Kane. Definitely Heady like.
Do people even have taste buds? There is some insane comparisons on here.
Omitting other beers from the Alchemist, I thought Foley Brothers Fair Maiden was similar to Heady Topper. I'd really need to drink the two side by side but I thought they were similar in smell and flavor.
I should mention I think Be Hoppy is Heady's little brother.
Fort George 3-Way IPA (Boneyard/Block 15) is better than Heady Topper
I actually think MO is closer than another one (which I do prefer to lunch) or lunch... haven't yet had dinner
Enough of these stupid post! Every day I come on this site I see ridiculous post about "the new heady", "the next heady", "closest to heady", etc. Theres a reason the beer is so highly sought after, because its unique. Every beer has its merits. Stop comparing beers that cant arent comparable!
