Definitely a fun time not only tasting the difference in the DIPAs, but also acquiring them.
Columbus Brewing IPA not as much citrus?! when fresh CBC IPA is basically like biting into a sweet grapefruit!
Head Hunter is a fruit bomb. White Rajah with a little citrus is close to Pliny.
If you could combine Arctic Panzer Wolf and Dreadnaught, then take away some of the alcohol bite, youd be close to PtE.
I would agree with the Kuhnhenn DRIPA and for a single you can't beat Huma Lupa Licious.
In OH there is White Rajah, Columbus IPA, and Head Hunter IPA. Also, Fresh 2XIPA.
Your bitter valentine was probably old unless someone picked it up from the brewery in the last week
Yep, I picked it up from the brewery on Saturday. They only had about a case and a half left, I grabbed 4 of them since I had my wife with me. Chuck was only giving out 2 per customer.
No surprise and without a doubt agree because of varying palates. Same issue in the whisk(e)y world of enthusiasts. I find it interesting and educational to read the differing opinions.
One thing is for certain, this is a thread that toots the horn for quality DIPA's. As I cull the posts, I'm looking for several references of something I have not tried that is getting good reviews. Looks like I need to go get some L. Sucks (which I passed up two days ago as I was unfamiliar with it)!
In the nude too.
Pliny is my favorite along with ZD. It has the perfect amount of hops.
Thanks for posting your opinion on something that has nothing to do with the question the OP asked.
i hope not.....im pretty down on all the FF i've tried....and ready to travel for Pliny
Boneyard Hop Venom
I'm tellin' you guys, It's Lagunitas Sucks. I had just finished a case of Sucks right before having a bottle of pliny and thought they tasted exactly the same, aroma, look and everything.
Having my first one ever, and I have to agree completely. Found some fresh Sucks (20 days old) and it's incredible. Loaded with piney hops. Even looks the same.
Sucks is a fantastic replacement for PtE. Flavor profile, mouthfeel, aroma, etc. To me, and my unrefined face-hole, is creepy similar.
yeah what everyone else is tellin ya. lagunitas sucks, and of course jai alai. you have cigar city man. enough said.
Enjoy by and Hop Venom are the closest (Havent had Maine's Lunch).
Heady Topper is great, and very different, but if I had an endless supply of both, I would probably pick the pliny 60% of the time.
Alpine's Pure Hoppiness or Alpine's Bad Boy.
Moral of the story, nothing compares to pliny.often imitated, never duplicated.there are other excellent dipas, everyone has their preference on which is the best but pliny is the shit!
There is no substitute.
Oh yeah, bottled 2/19!
Sucks, maybe even a little better, maybe, never done a side by side.
Green Flash Imperial, Stone Enjoy By, CCB Jai Alai. A mouth full of Nugget hops.
Though it's a single IPA, I found Alesmith IPA to share a remarkably similar flavor profile to PtE. Maybe that's just me.
Beyond that, not much else really reminds me of PtE. As @Ipaupaweallpa suggests, Ruination 2.0 isn't a bad fit.
I just got a beer by Knee Deep called Breaking Bud. I was told that the series they're doing is right up there with Pliny.
I find Lagunitas Sucks very similar
Agreed. And Enjoy By.
After a 2 week cleanse and various enemas.
Take this for what it's worth, but I've only had two bottles of Pliny in my life that I paid $20 apiece for, and to this day I still haven't found anything even close to it. It's the only beer out of 1,000 I've tried that actually did live up to the hype. I would love to have another bottle and see how my opinion fares from 5 years ago. Lagunitas is awesome but I can't compare it to Pliny because Lagunitas has such a unique taste in all of their beers, if you know what I mean? There is no comparison in my opinion.
Never been able to try pliny, but I thought sucks had a sweet taste. Not bad in any way.
Note: I am likely the least obsessive about beer around here.
But I sure like beer.
Have to say Ballast Point Sculpin, drunk really cold. However, not a big fan of PTE
The newest Stone Enjoy by, Which is "Enjoy by 2/14 unfiltered" is the closest thing I have ever tasted to pliny, and I drink it multiple times a week. It is great and the only similar tasting brew ive ever had.
The new Enjoy By 2/14 unfiltered tasted so similar to pliny! That's exactly what I thought
Just drink enjoy by instead it's a better beer.
I wouldn't say better myself, but nearly identical and a hell of a lot easier for most to get
Hop Stoopid is basically a PtE clone.
I though Pliny was quite a bit lighter in flavor, maybe it's because my bottle was 6 weeks old but it wasnt super hoppy and didn't taste as high in alcohol.
