https://www.delish.com/food-news/a29312834/beer-advent-calendar-costco-kalea/ Has anyone picked up one of these yet?
So, these are mostly German microbreweries? Interesting. I Googled what brands are included for all of 5 minutes and couldn't seem to figure it out. Anybody know? My interest is piqued, but $60 for a case?
That's awesome. I think I'd do this more as a gift to someone as I'm not tackling a beer a day for 24 days. A local bottle shop near me does something similar where they curate, wrap and number a bunch of bottles for an advent calendar, but again, too much beer and too much pressure to consume it before the holiday.
From the year I did this, most of the beers were from 'different' breweries, but most cans listed one brewing location. Felt more like a smorgasbord of beers from a contract brew house than a collection of breweries. Combine that with the fact that many beer entry pages were difficult to find (labeling issues and language barrier), and I wouldn't expect to dig up much information on many of these beers. I liked the idea and it was a wonderful gift, but I don't know that I'd buy in again based on my previous experience. I'll see if I can't dig up a photo of the side of the box from my year to see how the beers compare, but at first glance, many of them look familiar.
They've been selling those in Denver since August Most of the brands aren't available locally outside of that pack. Some are craft'ish...others are closer to those store brand beers. Reactions from people who have experience with the styles seems to be mixed. I guess some are really good and others definitely aren't. That's probably not too shocking considering how old some of those items might be. They were selling those last year, so there's a shot they're still the same stock.
List of beers from blown up image so forgive the (potentially egregious) misspellings: Baren Weisse Pale Hefeweizen Burgerliches Brauhaus Altbairisch Helles Edel Bayer Urtyp Helles Erlkonig Helles Graminger Kinta Dark Hefeweizen Grandl Lager Helles Hernnbrau Jubilaumsbier Dark Lager Herrngiersdorfer Hopfen Cuvee Pils Hohenthanner Blau Weisse Pale Hefeweizen Hosl Rauchmann Rauchbier Kartauser Bock Dark Doppelbock Kauzle Helles Kress Baynisch Zwickel Kurptalzbrau Helles Ladenburger Weizenbock Loncium Winer (Vienna) Lager Memminger Gold Marzen Austrian Style Perfenzauber Pale Ale Propeller Turbo Prop Imperial Pilsner Schlossbrau Rhoder Pils Schanitl Jubilaumssud Marzen Schwarze Tinte Dark Bock Wittmann Urhell Helles Zwdnitzer Rauchbier
Lowe's has already replaced their outdoor & patio furniture section with trees, inflatable yard decorations, wreathes, and lights.
It's impressive that the case actually contains 24 different beers rather than 2x12, 4x6, etc, but that's all I'll praise it for at this point in time.
i got one for xmas from my sister-in-law a few years ago and all of the beers were almost a year old. only the darker ones were somewhat worthwhile.
poured everyone I had into glasses, couldn't even finish the box they all were so tinny. I think one or two weren't but even then they weren't great beers. Felt bad was very thoughtful of my wife but I'm lucky enough to be in a place I don't need to drink crappy beer for no reason
It's 2.50 a can for a bit more than a pint. I'll probably give it a shot. Great concept, the execution might be a bit questionable but we will have to see. Is the idea then that you drink 1 a day for the whole month of december? I always thought advent calendars were for the 12 days of christmas? I not much of a #xmasadvocate though so I might just be out of the loop
$10 per 4 pack of pints doesn't seem bad for imported microbrew. My local IPA's are $15 for a 4-pack and that is before shipping them across the pond
I would love to hear feedback from any Ba folks who are over that way and can give insight into this pack? Are these considered swill or decent lol? @Snowcrash000 any feed on this pack?
I purchased the 2017 version from my Costco in SW Denver. I was not impressed with the beers and found most to be old/oxidized. I also fell behind on the beer a day despite my best attempt to stay current. If you have a local bottleshop doing something similar, I think you'd be better served with that option. From my experience, the Costco pack was all gimmick and didn't deliver on quality. Surprising as I find Costco to be pretty good at providing value in most other areas.
I am leaning on the side of pass also. Too many folks saying metallic taste and old. Sounds like more a money grab than enjoyable, appreciate the feedback. Now I just hope no family gets me this for Christmas lol.
I couldn't really comment on this particular pack, but none of the breweries mentioned ring a bell at all and I generally try to keep far, far away from these German advent calendar offerings as they are, in my limited experience, usually an attempt to pass off old swill by crappy breweries at an outrageous price. Kalea is quite notorious for this in my opinion.
Thank your for your input, I am taking it and passing. I also did not recognize any of the names and that was weird to me, figured I would have known a few. I always am skeptical with holiday packs just because it seems to always be more a gimmick than legit. Cheers
What he said. My daughter and son-in-law bought this as a gift last Christmas. There were maybe 2 or 3 tasty ones, the rest were really a waste/waist of calories. It's the thought that counts. But fo $60 - now's ood time to remind my daughter to not get me this again this year.
were the ones you guys had from these same breweries? Is it the same pack year after year or is there any hope it's improving? I really like the idea and would love it to be evenly moderately representative of german beer generally
