    Exactly!

Folks who profess inclusion & tolerance really only do so if you think exactly like they do. Otherwise you are viewed as being the enemy to be defeated at all cost. Apparently one strategy is to put you in prison even if you have not broken any laws.

    Cheers!

Historically there is nothing particularly new about this except the the speed and spread of ideas and demonizing.

I agree that it is not "all". For those that do operate this way, they can be quite virulent.

Accepting of diversity of thought is the preferred doctrine in my opinion.

    Cheers!

True, it's not a new phenomenon. However, I would argue that the advent of social media and the degradation of journalistic integrity has taken it to a level previously unseen.

Yup. As I made mention in post #529 of "intensity".

The broad level of virulence in today's discourse is the worse that I have seen in my lifetime.

    Cheers!

There will always be those that bring up the racial/gender card . I am a retailer and located in one of the most diverse cities in the nation and yes, craft consumers are predominantly Caucasian but I have made many, many friends in the industry that just love beer! It’s a passion for everyone, some just have FOMO (fear of missing out) or first world problems.

No doubt that that's really messed up, but literally what does some obscure podunk liquor store in the outskirts of Canada have to do with the larger craft beer world? That's no different than the crap I see on reddit. Not the end of the world, shitty as it was, I can't say THAT image would make me skip out on a brewery visit...that is, unless a brewery posted that image instead.

Where are you seeing this? I understand that there have been a few instances on college campuses (what?!? College kids are somewhat irrational and over zealous?!) but more generally in society where is this sort of thing actually happening. Seems to be a pretty broad spectrum of beliefs/ opinions on display in the media generally. There is a lot of engineered conflict being used to drive clicks and ratings but I don't see anyone being jailed without committing a crime (well I do actually, and they're mostly not white and it's mostly related to police/prosecuter misconduct)

I agree, and I don't think the few acts of overly racist behavior are really the problem. Some people seem to feel like they are ignored or tokenized or even exploited by the beer community/industry, and the response of so many in this thread to tell people their lived experience is wrong because it didn't mesh with the dismissers experience kind of demonstrates that it's certainly plausible that that attitude of dismissal would be expressed in person as well.
Obviously, as your experience indicates, there are black people (and it's safe to assume other non white people) who have had great experiences of the beer world, it's just disturbing to me how many people feel the need to assert that someone else's experience is wrong and they must be lying or overly sensitive.

If I'm giving off the vibe that there's dismissal or denial of another's perspective then my bad, that's not what I was going for. However, we aren't talking about whether racism exists or saying that racists don't drink beer. My contrary comment was to shed light on the fact that while there may be racists among us, the craft world may be just as uncomfortable as any other in that regard, and I choose to remain steadfast and be a part of it and be present. I'll be the welcome face of color to those who feel uncomfortable in a sea of "other." But the world of craft beer is no more problematic than any other, there will be all types of people across the spectrum but maybe just maybe, through beer, we can find some common ground, dash ourselves against the uncomfortable rocks of cognitive dissonance and grow. All of us.

I think the safe takeaway here is that it's best to exercise caution when tempted to pass off antecdotal evidence as proof (or disproof) of anything. Especially when discussing something like "craft beer culture" in a country of 300+ million people. I've been to breweries in south florida, rural ohio, Toronto, Chicago, Denver, Portland, etc. Sure, you'll find similarities, but a prevailing culture--specifically as it relates to race and gender? I'm not so sure.

Interesting to bring up, but in practice nobody is truly tolerant or truly intolerant, and we are all humans with flaws. But I mean clearly I am the least tolerant man alive harboring all racists under my protective umbrella according to @brandnewcardock :grin::grin::grin::grin:

Hmm. It’s also what led us from the Civil War where a very large percentage of military males were killed or wounded, to WWI. From that Great War, the war to end all wars, right into WW2 what 20 years later. Unfortunately, I don’t think we’ve learned all that much in 154 years. We went from muskets to Atomic Weapons in only 80 years. That’s sobering, we’re counting exponentially right now,

Yep, our entire political class is more criminal than not. No wonder our media has devolved into a parade of faux outrage, anything to distract the common folk from the ongoing criminal conspiracy that their federal government (and probably most state and local ones as well) has become

Never understood the whole "culture" thing. I've been to many breweries in different states. Sure there is the occasional conversation with someone or some family if in a close proximity. Never have I had the urge to get a phone # and stay in touch with those folks. What are y'all longing for so badly that you need this communal hand holding? I've drank with all races and sexes and lgbt. Just wondering if I'm missing out on this while community thing. Cause I'm pretty sure that's everywhere you go?

Seriously though, those people have such generic names you can't Google them and expect to hit the right ones... I ended up on a soap opera star and a Canadian politician from the 70s before I realized how futile it was. A little more specificity would be helpful.

They aren't real people. That's the point. They're strawmen he's using purely to forward his argument, because he doesn't have examples of people literally calling for people to be jailed due to "PC crimes" or non-crimes or whatever lol. It's just not often people get so attached to their strawmen that they assign them names.
