I'll be making the trip from North Carolina to Detroit for Christmas and I'm curious about the beer options up there (or maybe even along the way). I know the western side of Michigan is supposed to be well-stocked with options but what about metro Detroit? I'm open to any brewery ideas, interesting bottle shops, or local beers. Thanks!

Kuhnhenn and Witch's Hat for breweries are both musts. If you wanna make the drive out to Ann Arbor (and depending on where you are, it may not be too far), hit Jolly Pumpkin.

Bars that have nice taplists include One Eyed Betty's, Clubhouse BFD, Boat Works (@Brianw508 runs that place and is a good BA), Slows, Vinsetta Garage, and I think Hopcat will be open in Detroit by then.

Stores that I frequent are Holiday Market (@Holiday1072), Champanes and 8 Degrees Plato.

There is obviously a lot more in the area, and depending on where you are staying, there may be better options, but those are my favorites.

Kuhnhenn is the must-visit in metro Detroit. If you are downtown, I recommend Grand Trunk for a beer bar and it's worth going to the Atwater "tap room" to see a brewery that has been in Detroit forever. For food: I like Green Dot Stables or Slows in Corktown, Traffic Jam in Midtown, and just about everything in Royal Oak.

Lol. Witch's Hat is far closer to Jolly Pumpkin than it is to Kuhnhenn. In any event, the Metro Detroit area is a big sprawling mess, so your specific area is key. If you're in the north or east suburbs, Kuhnhenn (Warren) and Bastone (Royal Oak) are pretty neat places. And as bottle shops go, you'd be hard-pressed to beat Champane's, which is right down the street from Kuhnhenn or Holiday Market, which is right down the street from Bastone. If you're in the west suburbs or downriver area, Witch's Hat (South Lyon) and the Ann Arbor scene (Jolly Pumpkin, Ashley's) are far more accessible. Also, if you're downriver, the Oak Cafe (Wyandotte) always has some decent taps.

It sure is. But if you're near the middle or eastern sides of metro Detroit, going to Witch's Hat is less of a drive than JP, and Kuhnhenn would be the closest, relatively. Lol.

About 5 minutes less (owing to Witch's Hat's distance from the major highways). And from my place in Hamtramck, getting to Jolly Pumpkin is marginally easier. Hence my point about what's considered the "Metro Detroit" area being a big sprawling mess.

All great suggestions. As stated it's heavily depended upon the location.

And really, the path on the way up to Michigan could land you at some good places as well if you can deviate from the path a bit.

M-1 in ferndale does growler fills of a variety. For the best cocktail go to the sugar house; which Happens to be right by slows BBQ which IMO has the best tap list and prices. Right across the street is Mercury bar which has amazing burgers, adult milkshakes and a solid craft tap list. Roast is a bit more fancy you might say has good taps and vintage bottles. A little bit pricier. As far as bottle shops yep holiday is the best. If you make it to ferndale do yourself a favor and go to schramms you will thank me 100x over and one eyed bettys(50 taps or so)

Unless you like the style of beer Jolly Pumpkin makes I would avoid it at all costs.

If you're heading up I-75 go to Country Boy in Lexington. I was just there and they have some pretty outstanding BA beers and you can get growlers of pretty much everything they have.

If you're heading up I-77 you have lots of options in Ohio (Columbus, Hoppin Frog, Brew Kettle, Fat Heads, etc)
