Wanted to post this for the MN folks. Anyone get either of these brews? It's made for Bank Brewing Company (actually brewed by Brau Brothers) for the Jesse James days festival in Northfield MN. Templeton Rye barrels were used for aging. 200 750ml bottles released just to Northfield called Devil's Gulch and the 1876 bottles going out to distributors this week. Lucky me, i have a co-worker who lives 10 minutes from Northfield and was able to score me two 750's and two six packs of 1876. Now, the questions i have are:

1.) Has anyone had this brew that can offer a review. Couldn't find anything on BA for the brews or for Bank Brewing.
2.) Is this just a re-branded Rye Wyne? I'm sort of suspecting it might be just given the vague details around the beer. 750 is nicely presented with a yellow wax-dipped top. At just 200 bottles total for this beer, i'm hoping it's a Rye Wyne variant rather than just a re-label.

If anyone has more deets, please share!

I have a bottle of the Devil's Gulch waiting for me the next time I visit the Muni :sunglasses:.

The 1876 is a nice drinker. Hop bite is more subtle this time around, nice rye character, too.

    As to #2 -- that's my assumption.

They modified 1876 this year correct? Sounds like it is hotter (around 9% abv) this year than previous years? Either way, excited to try them. Thanks for the post Chaz.

Not sure that 1876 has had such a drastic change in ABV (that sounds like it would be for the barrel-aged version).

A label and slight name-change is all I'm aware of:

They both sound lovely. Anyone around here from around there? Would like to get a bottle of Devil's Gulch, but won't have any time this week to drive south, & have no idea what the demand would be like in the neighborhood.

They are only selling the 750 at the two Muni stores in Northfield, i would imagine you could just walk in and buy as many as you like. Shouldn't be too hard to obtain...getting there is the hardest part, especially with pre-ABR events going on. =)

There are a few bottled-gems down that way, but things do move faster than you think.

And just for the sake of clarity, I believe Firehouse Liquors in Dundas to be a privately-held entity, rather than a Municipal store?

Mmmm...Templeton Rye. I may have to make the trek down to Northfield, if I can find a little time...

Shag, maybe if you know someone cool that has a bottle, they would crack it open and share. :grinning:

Well heck, it's only 39 minutes from my house per MapQuest. Time for a scenic evening drive this week!

Hmm...that would certainly be a good thing. Wonder if I know any such kind souls...

Yeah, if you're in the south metro say Burnsville or around that area, it's a straight shot.

i've had both. the devil's gulch has a strong whiskey flavor. it sells for $12.99/750 and the 1876 is $8.99/6. the Northfield muni and Firehouse liquors in Dundas are the only liquor stores selling them. I like both beers but found Devil's Gulch to be something quite unique. i'll probably buy a few more bottles of the gulch and let it age

Saw both beers at Eagan Cellars also. $13.99 on Devils Gulch.

Is this just a repackaging of Rye Wyne though?

I'd really like to try this, but the hint of Rye Wyne repackaging is keeping my wallet attached to my ass.

Whereas Rye Wyne weighs in at 11% ABV, Devil's Gulch is 9%. Seems to me that they're different critters, but all of this curiosity has me curious enough that I think I'll buy a couple of extra bottles and do a side by side.

P.S. It just occurred to me that this guy would know for sure. Has anyone asked him?

Holy mother of all that's holy.

I just popped the bottle I was jazzed to find at Eagan Cellars. All I have to say is, thank God for the one-bottle limit. This isn't beer. This is dirty water that's been fouled by something unspeakable. Shitty would be giving it too much credit. This is the first & last beer I'll ever try from Bank Beer Brewing.

    Wow. Horrific. Three sips. Drainpour.
