I was at a store today that had 4pks of Stone Ruination for 6.99. Great deal i figured!! Normally its around that just for a bomber. I grabbed a 4pk and was browing around when i remember to check the date. Best by 11/20/12. So this was brewed on/around August 20th. Even at that price, I put this back on the shelf. Im not a hop snob by any means, but a beer like Ruination should really be enjoyed within probably 60 days , really. I should note that this deal was not in place because of the date on the bottles, it is a holiday sale.

I buy a lot of SN Torpedo, Celebration, but typically I can find it bottled within 60 days.

I did report the store on Stones website, as they had stacks of Ruination, and Im guessing its was all bottled the same date.

I know its been discussed before, but would you buy an 'old' IPA/DIPA at a discounted price? I maybe would have if this was 3.99, but for 6.99 i can get a three week old six pk of Celebration!

I've had a 6 month old ruination before... Hops did fade but i'd still buy it at 6.99!

A holiday sale and not because of the date on the bottles? Yeah, right.

The reason i doubt it is because other Stone products are included, and only the Ruination was out of date.

I don't know about discounts, but they (stores) should consider putting yellow warning stickers on old bottles of Hop Stoopid. When that beer turns it does so in a big way.

OK. Never mind. But were the other Stone products as heavily discounted as well? If not, it was a smokescreen.

Everything was 6.99 from Stone. Store does this for various beers every month. Regardless, this is better then them trying to sell it at all full price- which countless stores do. Still wasnt quite good enough for me to purchase though.

Those would still have been good but the discount was appropriate.

I agree the discount was appropriate, but i had the below options. I went w/ option B.

    Option A: 4 month old Runination: $6.99 4 pk
    Option B: 30 day old Celebration: 6.99 6 pk

Couple years back I was visiting AZ for spring training. I stumbled across a big wooden barrel full of discounted beer for 75 cents a bottle at AJ's Market. In the barrel was about twelve 5 month old Celebration Ale, ten Odell IPAs with a best by date I remember seeing as very reasonable and some others.

I didn't get too greedy, but I did grab 4 of each.

I once saw Victory Hop Wallop for $10/6 pack on clearance. Which is hilarious, since I think it's much better with a bit of age on it.

I should have pounced all over that.

Personally, I would've passed too. I love me some hops and I find that a lot of IPAs and DIPAs just aren't that fun to drink once the hops fade, even at a discount. I'd have made the same choice you made and found something else fresh in the store.

I'm in PA where you can buy a 4 month old six pack of Ruination at Wegmans for $17.99.

i think youre silly for passing that up. there is so much hops in there slightly past the best by date isnt going to kill it. and unless the distribution company comes to collect old bottles that store is stuck with it. and in the booze world there is very little markup to play with.

I will gladly pay for freshness. I don't care how well it still may have held up, if there is fresher product available I would prefer to purchase that.

At that price, I would say buy it and try it, you might be surprised to learn that you still enjoy it.

Nope, would never pay for old beer, Quite the opposite, I would pay extra for very fresh beer. There is a definite drop-off of some beers when they get older. Why would I buy substandard product? How many of us would buy expired milk?

Once I grabbed a few Ithaca Alphalphas (a beer I have had after a few months many times, love it a lot...holds up extremely well) brought them to the counter and told the dude that they were 7 months old and he needs to mark them down. He sold them to me for 7 bucks - half price. Made great extras!
