Just curious as to whether any of you have a regular bottle shop you hit when you visit the States?

I have a place that is on the way home from NY State, or even good for a quick day trip (about 150 km from the house in Ottawa). The customer service there is beyond amazing, selection is great for the area, and the guys who run the place are fantastic (I can email them orders and questions, and they respond super fast) and are huge beer enthusiasts. Their prices are quite reasonable too, for example, BCBS was only $25/4...$5 cheaper than anywhere I had seen.

So what about you? Do you have a regular American bottle shop? Why do you frequent this place? Is it convenience or something else?

I shop in Royal Oak, MI.
They have a couple shops there (one with the best selection in southeast Michigan, the other is smaller but the staff is top notch and hook me up from time to time).
There are a couple other places around Detroit that I may pop in, but that only happens when I'm in their area while shopping with my wife. :slight_frown:

haha, I only do my bottle shop beer buying in the states, but I live on the border so that's a no brainer. I've been pretty much just going to premier gourmet in amherst that last 3-4 months due two main reasons: 1. they have an "okay" twitter presence so I usually know what seasonals are in stock and if it's worth my time heading there ("okay" because they tweet random high demand seasonals but not everything) and 2. they have the largest selection around here so i can spend some time figuring out which IPAs are the freshest and not get stuck with buying zero IPAs or buying 3-6 month old ipas by accident.

about 80% of the time before, though, I used to go to consumers on niagara falls blvd in niagara falls, NY because it was 10 minutes from the border and still had a decent selection. the selection is still pretty good compared to canada, but i find over 50% of their stock is old to really old in terms of IPAs. i constantly see expired stone bombers on the shelf there. also, their social media updates are pathetic even for just regular seasonals so I can't be bothered to keep dropping in hoping that they have what i want when i know premier has it.

i usually go there if i need a quick 6-12 regular style beers (pale ales and lagers) for get togethers with non-craft drinkers, but that's about it. i wish this could just be my home store where I spent all my beer cash so they would get to know me as a regular, but the extra 10 minutes to premier isn't that bad. I did a grab and dash to premier two weeks ago for BA Narwhal in exactly 60 minutes door to door, so that's not too bad.

I also am in Ottawa but have family in MI and OH. I often stop at beers of the world in Rochester to/from home (huge selection, OK prices, great staff but they don't hold beers). I hit up a few different bottle shop in Cleveland and Ann Arbor; again, great selection and staff, but no one that holds bottles for me. I usually have to set-up IP's to get special releases and most people in the states I have dealt with aren't that interested in Canadian beer though I am slowly changing their minds one BA at a time ! I am usually picking up shelf beer (not there is anything wrong with that!).

Pollo, you ever looking to split an order, let me know.

Works for me...though, with the scowl I got from my wife yesterday after bringing $500 of beer back, I'm probably gonna be under the eye for a while

I usually shop at 8 Degree Plato in Ferndale, Holidary Market in Royal Oak, Champagne's in Warren. Or if I'm lazy to drive far I'll just go to Ryan's in Port Huron and see what they have.

Sorry...I thought there was sort of unwritten rule about promoting stores here.

But the store is Bottle Caps in Watertown.

Not a fan of Champagne's. Staff is chilly, forced to buy packs rather than singles.
Holiday has the best of all worlds.... singles, selection, and decent staff.
I have yet to hit 8 Degrees as Holiday fills all needs, including Cypress Grove cheeses.

Oh really? I kind of like Champagne's I can usually find Stone bombers and other stuff there. Just recently I was checking out with a bottle of DFH 75min and the manager was "want me to grab a bottle of 120 from the back for you?" and on Sunday they were nice with the BCBS and Morningwood beers.

8 Degrees you can mix your own six and get like 10% off.

I have only gone a few times and that was enough for me. I don't buy Stone products so I wouldn't know about their bomber availability. I guess I'm talking mostly the 12oz'ers.
Nice that a manager took care of you. I've never had such luck.
I get taken care of at other places by mgmt.

Even when I roll up to Kuhnhenn I still shop exclusively in RO.

Looks nice but I think I'd rather drive the extra hour and go to Waterbury VT and hit up Hill Farmstead on the way back.

Premier Gourmet north of Buffalo is a short drive for me. Consumers will have the odd surprise as well.

Winooski and CBC Waterbury are regular stops on my Vermont trips.

I have yet to do it, and I would like to go to Rochester to see the Bulldogs play the Americans one of these days. According to my brother, Beers of the World in Rochester NY is the place to go.

Thats fair. They do get some interesting distro up there.
But the drive from any border crossing to something substantial in VT is a headache. I've done it a couple times.
Whereas I can go 10 minutes into MI and get all the state and its distro has to offer pretty easily.
Or go south for a shade under an hour and hit Toledo and the Ohio market.

The brewery events this time of year trump all of VT.
4Elf, Kuhnhenn Solstice, HopCat Detroit opening (120 different Short's taps), Grand Rapids BC anniversary party, Greenbush christmas party.... then there are the bottle releases.

Sure, VT has a few great breweries.... but c'mon. ANY day of the week?

The IGA in Potsdam, NY is pretty decent. I go to soccer games at St. Lawrence in Canton, NY once and a while and it's always a quality stop off. Apparently Canton has a brewery now too, but I've yet to check it out.

Winooski Bev is a quality bet in Vermont and I've been a few times.

I meet my sister a few times a year in either Vermont or Maine, so I get the benefits of a New England haul on those occasions.

Always nice to see family, better to bring back excellent beer
