Not really, but I drink low rated beers all the time. One of my tennis partners and I play late night some times and bring along a cooler of PBR. So good.

Rogue Voodoo: I have not tried this beer, but have actually tasted a maple bacon doughnut and was SHOCKED. It was DELICIOUS.

SA Triple Bock: THE BROS GAVE IT A 94!? So WHICH IS IT!? Is it the worst beer ever, or the best and most misunderstood!?

I didn't like it. I've had worse, but for like $10 or however much it was for a bomber... I wouldn't do it again. But if you don't, you miss out on so many references! lol

You are paying admission for some number of pours, then choosing which of the many beers available to you to spend that admission on. If you choose some weirdo beer over one that you already tried and enjoyed or some normal sounding beer, then you are still choosing to spend a portion of your money on the bad beer, i.e. you are purposely buying bad beer.

I bought an SA Triple Bock years ago when I was just getting into beer and I couldn't hack it. I passed it around to a couple of my friends and even between the 3-4 of us I don't believe we finished it. I figured it would be awesome when I picked it up. I don't remember what the flavor was like, I just remember it being awful.

I don't buy beer that I think will be bad. There is enough highly-rated beer out there that I haven't tried that I would get first. Then I would buy good beer that I have tried before, as I am starting to do a little more frequently these days. $10 for a bomber of Voodoo whatever? Sorry, I'll take a six pack of Jack's Abby instead.

No, I don't purposely buy bad beer. But, I purposely give any bad beer I have to my BMC neighbor when he comes over.

I do not try a beer just to see if its as bad as everyone says it is if that's what you are asking.
I generally will not be dissuaded by low reviews though.

Noooooooo, don't, it was the only beer I spit out, right on the floor. Not good, I saved you on this one.

I just buy beer and make my own opinions. I actually liked pizza beer I wouldn't drink a 6 pack of it in a sitting. but it goes well with pizza.

I always try to buy a beer I never heard of before when I'm at the beer store. Just because it has a low BA rating doesn't mean you won't love it.

Sure, I'll "buy bad beer", mostly to form my own opinion about them.

For the most part, at least as far as BA ratings go, I seem to find myself concurring with "bad beers" or low rated beers.

Evidently it's like a game of Russian Roulette. Some bottles are drinkable and some have morphed into a soul stealing abomination that pours like chunky blackened bilge water and tastes like soy sauce squeezed from Bezelbub's inflamed hind end.
And yes, I hate myself enough to pull that trigger if offered.

Variety packs, like Night of the Living Dead. I pick a few out and contribute the rest to the Halloween Party or whatever.

Every once in a while I do. It's mostly just for laughs and giggles, but then again, is there anything like a cold bottle of bud select 55 to remind you why you only drink craft and despise pretty much everything made by BMC? It's not a bad occasional reminder to have.

I actually buy cheap, crappy beer all the time. But it's only for 2 reasons:
    1. Cooking. I love to cook with beer (nothing makes bratwurst better than boiling in beer before throwing it on the grill, not to mention beer-can-chicken) but I'd rather save the good stuff for drinking.
    2. Parties. I'm still in college and when I am partying it up, I'd rather get drunk (or help other people get drunk) on cheap beer. I'm not going to waste good beer for that.

Honestly, I rarely look up a review before I buy a beer. It's all part of expanding my horizons and trying out new beers. I may not know it's a bad beer, or a good beer, unless I try it for myself.

I also feel that doing this helps me rate beers a little more true. If I look up and see that other people have rated a beer highly, then I may add a few points, stars, or whatever to my tasting because I've been influenced by reading a review first.

I also feel this goes toward some beers that get a lot of hype around them. That we add points to the rating because we are excited that we actually got to try this beer.

I think blind tastings would reveal a lot to some posters, and I've seen it happen before

I basically agree with the caveat that you need to adjust based on style - most of the lager styles are not rated nearly as high as IPAs and Stouts.

Good point, and I agree completely. My general habit is that I only pay attention to within style scores and comparisons when deciding which beers to sample, etc.
