Read about it yesterday.. As usual, they're brewing beer for the sake of being weird and different.. Moon dust is another way of saying dirt. So, it's beer with dirt in it. I've had that before.. It's called drinking at a beach bonfire.

    This sounds Rogue-like.

This is kind of what I was thinking as well, but didn't want to compare them to each other.

I really don't either. I've been a Dogfish fan for a long time and any liking I had for Rogue was completely shattered by the Voodoo Donut beers (as well as a few before that, but to a MUCH lesser extent). But claiming you're using moondust because of its positive effects on the beer's taste is a page ripped straight from the Rogue manual.

I actually thought this thread was a riff on what the Alstrom brothers posted earlier today. I was disappointed.

By far the craziest ingredient they've used.

Why can't they just make a beer that sells based on taste not gimmicky marketing?

They explained why they used moon dust in the article. I don't see how its a gimmick if its a viable ingredient. Its no more gimmicky to me than bourbon barrel aging something.

As enthusiasts we often claim to love brewers/brewery's who push the envelope but the two that seem to actually do that, consistently get the most flack while the top 250 list is full of hardly anything but IPA's, barrel aged stouts, and sours, I'm not disagreeing with the list by the way, but in the realm of creativity making one of those styles isn't exactly earth shattering.

Without deviation there is no progress so it doesn't matter if its good or bad it just matters that people are still trying to deviate and make something new.

I don't always like the results but I nevertheless enjoy the creative process regardless of context.

This isn't pushing the envelope for brewing. It's a gimmick plain and simple in true Dogfish tradition.

Not sure if I'd rather have this or Beard Beer...

I like DFH, but this does seem gimmicky. Although if I were brewing at DFH or one of the major breweries, I'd probably want to have fun like this, too. It's like being a tenured professor and being able to research/write about whatever you want.

I was just at the brewery for the Dogfish Dash and got to try this beer! Its an Oktoberfest beer with moon dust added in the boil. It's a really good oktoberfest beer, one of my favorites of the season! But, I couldn't pick up what the moon dust added. I've just used this as an excuse to tell friends "I WENT TO DOGFISH HEAD BREW PUB AND DRANK A BEER WITH SPACE DIRT IN IT! IT'S SO MUCH BETTER THAN REGULAR EARTH DIRT!!"

DFH is amazing. This idea is not. A little too off centered Sam. It is just fucking beer. Space shit not necessary.

This is absurd. Why the hell would anyone not drink a beer they like because of another they do not? Makes no fucking sense. I think Lagunitas Imperial Stout blows. Am I going to stop drinking Sucks? Hell no.

yeah, it's pushing the envelope... right!

"...moon jewels are made up primarily of minerals and salts, helping the yeast-induced fermentation..." So there are no minerals and salts on Earth that could do this? Only Lunar will do?

When is the next Mars rover coming back? I'd venture to guess that those salts and minerals from Martian dust would help the yeast-induced fermentation in an even greater way.

I want to put space into my system. I want to swallow moon shit - at least a taste of it. I'm willing to bite on this gimmick just because. DFH has the resources to do something this stupid/awesome. It does sound like it's brewed for fun, and that's my favorite part.

I don't know about that. I seriously doubt it will come through as it sounds, after the yeast get through with it anyhow.
