From the Dogfish Head site… “Behold, the ultimate collaboration of off-centeredness and musical exploration ... Dogfish Head x Grateful Dead!! As beer geeks with a music problem, we couldn’t resist teaming back up with this legendary band to continue our long, strange trip together with a brand-NEW beer, Grateful Dead Juicy Pale Ale! “Clocking in at 5.3% ABV, this pale ale is brewed with Kernza® grains, granola and heaps of good karma for a refreshing, light-bodied beer that will leave you with nothin’ left to do but smile, smile, smile. The addition of El Dorado and Azacca hops brings waves of tropical pineapple, mango, and passion fruit notes for a vibrant tapestry of alluring aromas and flavors that just keeps truckin’ sip after refreshing sip. “The good vibes keep rolling down to the ingredients. Kernza® is a sustainable rock star of a grain developed by The Land Institute, a Kansas nonprofit transforming agriculture with perennial grain crops that enhance farmer resilience while addressing ecological challenges. Kernza's® deep roots remove carbon from the atmosphere and trap it underground, and its perennial nature means that the grain stays in the soil year-after-year, improving its structure and nutrient health, along with protecting the land from erosion and maintaining the ecosystem. This regenerative crop not only contributes to climate change adaptation and mitigation, but it also lends a uniquely nutty flavor to this juicy brew.” — The can art is excellent. I still need to try the beer. Anyone else have it yet? Did you try their previous American Beauty collab? Do you have another favorite beer and Dead pairing?
I know I've said this before, but can we try to leave the hippie crap behind us the same way we're trying to leave the frat-boy humor behind us?
Gotta say, I’m hard pressed to name a better American Rock n Roll band with significant longevity than the Grateful Dead. I agree that the granola addition to the beer is a step too far, though. Personally, I’d rather see a pilsner, AAL or classic APA for a Dead beer than a hazy, too.
"juicy" is a disservice! That's a shame. The Dead deserve better. As frat boy in the early '90s I also got to see various Dead shows. 35yrs later, they're still a favorite band and those fraternity days shaped my later success. That is to say, they both penetrated me deeply... Cheers!
Some of their previous versions of their Grateful Dead beer also had granola (it was the winning result from fan suggestions) and they have been marketed as a “pale ale,” “imperial pale ale,” and “hazy IPA” depending on the beer/recipe/year. Clearly something that changes with the times (unlike Dead fans - I kid ).
Nope. I feel like the shtick of the beer pulls more Dead fans to the beer than beer fans to the beer (if you can look at the two groups without shades of grey or overlap for simplification) - which is fine of course. I had friends who bought the big bottles for themselves back in the day just due to the label. They never offered me a taste and I can’t say if they ever opened the bottles.
If iI saw it in my bottle shop I would give it a try- Just another "Themed" brew from Dogfish Head--Nothing wrong with that-some have been hit and miss--I really enjoyed the Miles Davis Bitches Brew they had
I like ZZ Top and Heart as high-quality American rock n roll bands with legs. I like the Stones, too, but they’re British.
I thought it was a hair better than average. “Hazy yellow with a grayish hue. Two fingers of off-white, moderately-airy foam head. Good retention and spotty lacing. “Pear, pineapple and pepper in the nose. “Similar taste with a touch of biscuit in the finish. “Prickly, medium-bodied mouthfeel. “Would not have been my style choice for a Dead-inspired beer, but relatively easy-drinking and sessionable. It is juicy as advertised.”
I read online they’re selling tall boys at Dead & Co at the Sphere. If anyone’s going, snag a pic for the thread!
I would agree. I'd give it a solid B rating. Nothing wrong with it or nothing offensive. Its literally what it says it. Probably less offensive than most mass produced juicy ipas.
