Seems like DIY Bourbon/Whiskey Barrel Aged RIS. Has anyone tried doing this?

I've not personally done this but it's been mentioned at least a few times in the million "I hate AB-inBev, therefore I hate BCBS and need a replacement" threads.

Did it with Flying Dog Gonzo a few years back trying to simulate barrel aged Gonzo. I was less than impressed with myself afterwards.

I can't imagine this meshing well but I'm really tempted to try it. Sidenote - any ever have Speedway Bombs? Irish car bombs with Speedway instead of Guiness. Deeeeelish:stuck_out_tongue:

I'm tempted to try it, I just don't want to waste a good half bomber of RIS trying it.

I do it all the time with less-than-stellar imperial stouts and other strong darker beers like imperial porters, wee heavies, barleywines etc. Perfect for a one and done situation. I use mostly bourbon, but have used scotch as well. I have been finding that I am not the biggest imperial stout fan (anymore) unless there are some bourbon flavors.

Some people are probably gonna laugh about this, but I have actually done this with the last 6 oz. of a BB Plead the Fifth and some Woodford Reserve. I was only gonna have that one beer and wanted to kick it up a notch.

Would you say that they pick up the bourbon flavor well?

A friend of mine who's the head brewer and part owner of a brewpub doesn't have any room to barrel aged anything but he always has Basil Hayden's and Eagle Rare at the bar. His drink of choice is his Baltic Porter with a splash of either Basil's or Rare it works really well I drink them quite frequently. Its not like a BBA beer but still good.

Sometimes. Depends on the beer and how much bourbon you use. I normally use 2/3 to 3/4 of a shot for 12 oz. Like I said, I normally do it with beers that weren't very impressive to begin with so there is no loss if it doesn't mesh well. Sometimes, I have been pleasantly surprised and the beer has been improved dramatically. An example (not an imperial stout) of a major improvement is Nero's 1st Century Double Dark Ale http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/7734/76116. This beer was very bland and the bourbon blended well with what little flavor it had. I have also had some success with imperial stouts that weren't very good, but I can't think of a good example right now.

If you have something that isn't very good, put a little bourbon in it and see if you like it. Also, if you have a bomber of something that you think may be good with some bourbon in it, try it with just a little and see what you think. That way you aren't wasting very much. This is how I started doing this.

Though I'm not saying it would necessarily be a bad beverage, a shot of whiskey would be adding around 5-7% ABV to a 12oz beer. To mimic a BA Imperial Stout, it's probably more appropriate to put in 1/4 shot or less. I've tried it with some decent imperial stouts (none come to mind right now), with decent results.

I do agree with this, in terms of abv, but a 1/4 shot doesn't give you as much bourbon flavor as something aged in barrels for a year.

Sub Breakfast Stout for Speedway and this is also very good.

Totally! I hate those big company bastards at AB-Inbev so I drop a shot of Seagrams in my Guiness! Real talk.

    Nice.
However, I was trying to point out how annoying those threads have become.

Someone else pointed out in one of those million threads that AB-inBev did not purchase GI in a hostile takeover, but rather GI willingly sold themselves to AB-inBev. I have neither the time nor interest in verifying this, so please don't hold me to it.

BCBS still tastes great and was readily available in my market.
As long as this continues, I'll keep buying/drinking.

Genius, this man is. If I could straight purchase FBS, this would have done already. Bummer

This is probably almost certainly true. I'm sure it's a balancing act depending on personal preference.

I'd take Speedway over FBS any day. Consider yourself lucky.

People always prefer what they can't readily acquire. Maybe a trade is in order?

I've been at a bar that will do a bourbon rinse on the glass then fill with stout. adds a little bourbon flavor without killing the beer. results vary depending on the base stout.
often a good combo and i think the boilermaker idea could work for well for a beer cocktail depending on your base stout.

I've done Victory at Sea Car Bombs. Delicious. But the next day's hangover was pretty brutal.
