I just opened my first bottle of from a new pack of this year's Rabid Duck (I've had a lot of this beer in prior years) ... It didn't gush, but the head was pretty significant, even with a delicate pour into a tulip. There is a huge sourness to the beer that hasn't been there in past editions. Honestly, it reminds me of the infected 2009 Abyss I tasted. I hope this is just a single bad bottle ... I'm going to chill another one from the same pack and check it out later tonight.

Has anyone else noticed off notes to the most recent batch of Rabid Duck? (Please say no and I just got one bad bottle!!!)

Damn. I hope not. I still have a couple from the first round that hit Charlotte and they are fine but was planning on grabbing some more to throw in the cellar...

Bought 6 about a month ago. No problems with the three I have had.

I had this same experience in 1 of 2 bottles I had last year and 1 of 7 from this year. A definite sour cherry note

I got a couple at Sam's last week, and I'll report back when I taste it. Hopefully no sour notes!

    Uh-oh.
Personally, I don't ever drink anything from DR, but people ask for it a lot, so I've sent quite a few out...

I keep reading your last few words as "duck rabbit stew".

Yeah, I just sent out a 6 pk this week. Already offered to replace it if his is sour too.

Had my first '12 Rabid Duck the other night and it was OK, not great, didn't appear to be infected, and I usually look for an infection every time I crack open a D-R brew as they've had a bad history in that regard. Just so far here in 2012, they've recalled two batches of Milk Stout and we also had a badly infected keg of Amber Ale.

We also thought the Barleywine was infected as it poured with a larger than normal head, had a funky nose and some sourness and weirdness in the taste, but apparently that is the way it is supposed to be due to using a new hop variety because of the Amarillo shortage. I still think it's probably infected...

Any idea which batch of the Milk Stout? I might still have my bottle and I'd want to check. I'm open to giving it another try if that was an infected can, rather than a recipe that just clashes with my palate.

They were batches dated 004 12 (January 4th) and 039 12 (February 8th) on the cases. With a 3-month shelf-life the bottles should be marked best-by March & April (maybe May?). Really hard to tell on the bottles if it is the specific bad batch since there are no codes, just the best-by notches.

I think I already got rid of the bottle. It was probably bottled in an around then, but sometimes things can lay on TW's shelves for a bit, so it might have been older. That raises another possibility, that it maybe wasn't stored well.

I hate those notches... most of the bottles I've had lately aren't marked at all. I was examining that Rabid Duck bottle last night ... nice straight edge where a couple notches should have been.

I have had Rabid Duck from the keg and bottle this year and haven't noticed any infection. The last bottle I had (about 2 weeks ago) did have some funky metallic flavor that I wasn't there on the previous. I am chilling down a Rabid Duck now and will report back with what I find.

Ruh Roh, this is one of my favorite beers, and a very kind soul just hit me with an incredible box full of Rabid Ducks. I have pulled one from the cellar and cracked it, after receiving an alert and a link to this thread.

I believe it is infected, something I unfortunately know a bit about ala Shorts, Deschutes, and even other Duck Rabbit stuff, Milk Stout specifically. It has a thinner body than normal, larger head though there was no gush, and finer bubbled head it is. Does not taste like the Rabid Duck I had a week ago, or any I've had over the years, nothing like it. Tastes like the first stage, similar to the mildly infected Abyss '09 I had, and a couple of the CupaJoes I got (all the others were much more infected). Actually it doesn't taste unpleasant, though it has only a little of the flavors one associates with this beer, it has a sort of tang one might enjoy in a Berliner Weisse. I am gonna finish this, half way through right now. Hmm, wonder if they are all like this? Are any further along? Any not infected at all? Almost done with it, as I say, not unpleasant, reminds me of Tart of Darkness kinda, with a worse aroma, and thinner body and taste.

Funny as a homebrewer years ago I pitied myself cause I thought breweries had it so much easier, now I pity breweries, cause homebrewers have it so much easier.

That pretty closely matches my experience with the last round of Rabid Duck. This blows!

Just cracked my first one and I am not getting a gusher, no cherry on the nose, but thinner and I am getting a slightly sour and acitic taste (compared to ones i have tried from years before). Like you said, not unpleasant, but a bit odd. I am by no means an expert on infected beers so I can't tell for sure.
