I have this problem in recent years. Too many beers have horrifically stupid names, seemingly contrived by children holding breweries hostage. I'm at the point where I'll not even go to a brewery twice if the names of the beers are stupid enough. And I definitely won't order the stupidly named beers even once, if the board seems to be giving me a hint.

I actually bought one of those Fluffy Unicorn beers, but before I could drink it my daughter saw it, and she likes unicorns and rainbows so she drank it.

    She's 32.

I've probably always done that. Stupid names, immature or revolting labels (no need to post a pic of the most notorious one, fellas), bad politics, objectionable business and labor practices. Leave 'em on the shelf. At bars or breweries I just refer to the beer I order as "Let me have the (Brewer's name) pale ale" and drop the goofy name.

It's a positive aspect of having 10,000 breweries - it makes it easy to put a brewer on one's personal boycott list and still leaves lots more choices to drink.

To compete against Pabst Special Dark "The Lighter Dark Beer" ?

In the earlier 70s on the west coast, I remember Special Dark draft as one of the better dark lagers (but there were few competitors at the pizza parlors I ate at: Blitz, Rainier, Lucky, Heidelberg, Oly).

Promotional material from 1979 announcing the release of Pabst Special Dark used phrases like "will offer a dark variety that will lack the heaviness" and that the beer has been "under development for about two years" - all of which suggests it was a new recipe, unrelated to the earlier draught-only Pabst dark beer which used the same name.

Yeah, draught-only dark beers did have some regional popularity - in New England around the same period one often found a tap handle marked merely "Bavarian" and, upon inquiry, it was usually the dark version of the bar's most popular AAL, especially Narragansett, Ballantine and/or Falstaff (probably all the same beer out of the Cranston brewery).

Of course, the question about many of that era's "dark beers" was always were the breweries customers of Emken or other similar producers of brewing ingredients.

Not 100% sure the one you're talking about (is it by Against the Grain?)... but I totally agree on the label thing. There are beers who on artwork alone I won't buy because I'm embarrassed to have them in my house. And I'm a young(ish) guy, don't mean to sound like a prude, lol. But yeah, there's some bad ones

One I drink a lot of in the summer is Eel River Brewing - Climax 100. Incredibly stupid name.

They used to make a steam beer called California Climax, then they transitioned that brand to Climax Noel (a 9.2% red ale that may have been spiced? I can't remember but it was a holiday release) and then for some God awful reason when they decided to make this "light ale" (I'd say it's closest to a kolsch) with only 100 calories they moved the Climax brand to that one and named it Climax 100.

It sounds like a sex toy model number

I guess it depends what your definition of dumb is. I'll often times grab a beer off the shelf I know nothing about if it has a "clever" or "funny" name.

A local brewery released a TIPA this year labeled "not getting any younger.". I thought it was a funny play on words and ordered a glass solely for that reason (it was an OK tipa).

I'm sure some folks found the name dumb.

My favorite BW name is Old Blue Hair, and the label depicts an old woman in a walker with blue hair raising a pint of beer. The label makes me laugh every time I see it. Again, I'm sure there are those who think the name is dumb or are otherwise offended by the name.

Unless it's blatantly racist, political or homophobic, I tend not to get too worked up over the name of a beer.

But seriously, the dumbest thing is seeing "Triple IPA (TIPA)" label/name being put on 9.5-11% ABV Imperial/Double IPAs. :unamused:

I've never had an Evil Twin beer, admittedly has a lot to do with the names. I like classic names that don't try too hard (or at all) to be clever. The worst is when I can't even find the stupid name at all on the can due to the crazy artwork.

With the plethora of breweries each with numerous drafts, it's got to be difficult to come up with a unique eye catching name.
Sure, a lot of names are childish, but what really matters is the quality of the liquid inside the serving vessel.
Sticks & Stones may break my bones, but as a beer name it wouldn't hurt me.
Most beers with ridiculous names are horrible, but not all.
Purple Monkey Dishwasher, both bad beer & dumb name.
Old chub, odd name but great beer.
You sit there & try to come up with a unique name that fits the beer that has not already been taken.
Eventually you will take what they allow you to use.
Kind of like getting a custom vehicle license plate.

While I agree that most “punny” names are more bad than good, it honestly doesn’t impact whether or not I’ll try it. I
mean, if I can try something brewed by Hoof Hearted then where do I draw the line? Evil Twin beer names are annoying just because they’re so long and many are similar.
