Finally watched through the whole vid.

Yay for the shout-out to Wernesgrüner -- boo for having never heard of it.

And boo to the Miller bastardization of Löwenbräu -- in so many ways.

A favorite memory in Germany was being offered direction help by an elderly woman -- who explained we were looking for the "Pow-LAH-ner Keller and the Sal-VAT-or (Sal-VAH-tor?) Keller.

One time "The Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich" failed me.

Yeah, when Miller started brewing Lowenbrau in the US (circa 1977) it was not the same beer. But perhaps 'better' than US premium beers like Michelob?

I seem to recall having a Lowenbrau sometime (maybe in the 80's?) and thinking it was an OK beer but not worthy of the price.

    Cheers!

Sometime in the 90s we were getting German imported Löwenbräu for a while (@jesskidden can probably verify dates). It wasn't anything like the Miller recipe, but I still liked Spaten better.

Of course, it can't be beat at the Löwenbräu Keller proper -- fun place for an evening.

In the early 70s, Lowenbrau was excellent. I preferred Pschorr dark and Ritter Dortmunder light and dark, but I'd chalk my opinion up to personal taste.

I recall Löwenbräu being imported from Canada for a little while back in the 90's. My only experience with it was skunky bottles that had probably been sitting in my Winn-Dixie for years. Those bottles combined with green bottles of Heineken (yes, I know it's Dutch) and Beck's made me think German beer was horrendous for years and years.

IIRC, it was brewed in Canada right after Miller lost the right, but was soon brought in directly from Munich.

Canada may still have it brewed in-country as they have Spaten.

    Calling @jesskidden again.

That was my early experience with St. Pauli Girl and Becks. They always seemed to have that skunky smell like Heineken, so I dropped German beers for a long time until I discovered Weihenstephaner and Hacker Pschorr Gold

I like this video, thanks for sharing. Funny how off all of my preconceived notions of these pronunciations were.

Side note. I want to live in a place where fresh Weinstephaner is meh.

Same. My conversion beers were from Ayinger in the very early 00's. My local Old Chicago had just started carrying them and was offering tasters/discounts. I was shocked to find out they were German. After thinking Beck's Dark was about as good as German beer got, Ayinger's dunkel, weiss, export, and doppelbock changed everything. I got a chance to visit Munich in 2005 and that sealed the deal.

Enlightening and humbling video for Americans. Yet, I still think our American pronunciations are acceptable within our state lines. I'll definitely have to brush up a bit before a trip to Germany though.

Yeah, the contract for US market was moved to Labatt (w/all malt recipe restored) in '99, eventually we got the Munich-brewed version a few years later (w/InBev owned Labatt USA still the importer - see Oktoberfest rear label below), right into the AB/Import Brands Alliance era before AB-InBev stopped it. (I guess 25 years of Miller's version ruined it for the US market).

Coupon deal from 10 years ago, for 3 AB/Inbev Import Brands Alliance brands. As I recall it, Lowenbrau was difficult to find in many markets - don't know if that was AB's decision or the local AB houses.

Oh you lucky so and so! Ayinger is fantastic. I'd kill to get to drink some over there. Maybe someday. The Kroger store down the street from me used to stock the Ayinger Dunkel in the pint bottles. Then they suddenly stopped and added more hard seltzers and ciders. Ugh.:slight_frown:

So it was the early 2000s that the German import hit shelves? I always remember buying it at a spot where I lived before 2000 -- and I don't think it was Canadian-brewed, but maybe?

Here's a Labatt-brewed keg label which seems to be dated Feb. 2001.
As I remember it, that Oktoberfest was the first Munich-brewed Löwenbräu to hit the US shelves, followed by the regular beer (or, as the label shows, "Malt Liquor" for our Texas friends).

EDIT - Some sources put the Munich version back in the US in 2001 and others say 2003. Maybe it took a while and was region by region?

@Domingo more or less covered what I was going to say. I'd also note that the video isn't from a beer channel, so I took commentary on the actual beers as an aside.

Yeah, that one should be forgiven for at least a percentage of us older north Americans.

She mentioned äu pronunciation on Löwenbräu like she did with Hofbräu pronunciation. I thought there were times when she made the "oi" obvious and others where it wasn't so obvious to me, especially when she spoke Hofbäuhaus fairly quickly.

Really cool video. I guess I never understood what the umlauts sounded like. Subbed as I am always looking for cool cultural channels. I am going to go over to Germany within the next couple years, and I was thinking about learning German for fun. PS the sound mixing with the singing in the beginning made my ears blow up :grimacing:

Heck, I have a hard time spelling Weihenstephan, as well as others, let alone pronouncing them.
I still order a Jyro, at Greek restaurants, even though I know how it's supposed to be pronounced.
I bet if you ordered the beers the way they were supposed to be pronounced in most U. S. establishments people would be very confused. It's easier to say them in proper American.

I was at a brewery and the bar maid corrected a German man. He started talking German to her. She didn't get it. It was so funny. He ordered again and she corrected him again. She didn't know what was so funny.

    Nice thread.
I'd think Schvartszbeeyuhr, with accent on "bee"...but whadduIknow?

    .....

A couple things I noticed that made me wonder if they're consistent throughout Deutschland?
When “s” is followed by a hard consonant is it normally pronounced “sh”, as in how she pronounced Weihenstephaner.
And she pronounced a trailing “er” as almost a cross between “uh” and “ah” with a barely perceptible “r” to finish, as when she said both Weihenstephaner and Paulaner.

I agree with others about her comment on Hofbräu. ??She doesn't know anyone who would buy it at the store, but it's still better than American brands??.....needs klarheit (courtesy Google Translate).

An accent free German is spoken around Hanover (Lower Saxony), all other states have their own rules. If i would talk to a guy who speaks "friesisch" (close to the danish border) i couldn´t understand 1 word (at least not enough to follow a conversation)

Not surprisingly, that's not unlike regional differences in the US. There are areas, especially in the Midwest, or the Rocky Mountains, that an accent/dialect is essentially undetectable.
Go deep into south Louisiana, the Gullah country of South Carolina, Brooklyn NY (etc., ad infinitum), and there are more than just differences in pronunciation. Sometimes it sounds like a completely different language. Especially in south Louisiana (because it is in certain areas, there :sunglasses: ).

It's good to be able to ask correctly for a specific German made beer. Nothing worse than being at an American bar and asking for a German beer and being handed a Budweiser. :joy::joy::joy:
