Just tell 'em: "What are ya, stupid? Didn't you have Geography in 5th Grade*? - Budweis is in the Czech Republic!"

Or print out this handy image for use in loud bars.
*Granted, when I was in the 5th Grade, it was still "Czechoslovakia"...

I think she even mentions that in the vid. I learned it in college German. I always pronounce Spaten: ShpAHtn.

That's always correct for "P" and "T" after "S". The rest is written with "Sch" at the beginning but is pronounced the same way as "Sp*" oder "St*"
    E.g. Schwimmen, Schule, Schrot, Schade

My nickname for Lowenbrau, in the mid 80's was Louie's. Reason being I was too young to buy alcohol so my brother Lou would buy for us. Seems we were onto something with the nickname.

My impression is that Germans or maybe more accurately the Munich/Bavarian locals view the Hofbrauhaus as a "tourist trap" kind of place and tend to avoid it for that reason. I'd expect that to extend to offerings on the shelves. That is secondhand/thirdhand/hearsay kind of info though, so my impression could be wildly off-base.

Regarding buying it in the store, don't forget that there might be heavy competition - Weihenstephan, Schneider, Andechs, Weltenburger (maybe), Augustinerbrau, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Lowenbrau (with umlauts, of course!), and Spaten/Franziskaner, among others, plus the national beers. And ones from smaller local/regional breweries too.

The HB on the platz is considered a tourist trap, but there are plenty other HB spots (HB Keller is my favorite) to get their beer -- and HB has as many followers as the other 5 Munich breweries.

Since the vid author is an Augustiner follower, I have the feeling she's more than a little prejudiced.

Well, my real point is that when you see the umlaut you know the sound changes.

For instance, the word Braumeister doesn't have an umlaut... and yeah, it sounds like you'd probably expect.

    Brauerei is another one.

I figured the school names may be different…unfortunately the high school I work at got rid of German a few years ago.

Sadly the school will not produce anyone pronouncing these brands correctly. Unless they watch this video of course.

The only time I was corrected on this trip was when I looked at the menu and ordered a Köstritzer. I was corrected as I was asking for the locally brewed Krostitzer. First time in Liepzig, just assumed it was a familiar brand from the former East.

I dated a girl in Germany who kept trying to get me to practice ü because it is very difficult for English speakers. It requires you to pucker your lips. So I would pretend that I needed her to say it for me again, and every time she did I would kiss her

There are over 60 institutions of higher learning in the USA with their official name starting with "The".

Only one, though, is silly enough to think it makes them special.

I'd wager if you ordered a Lowenbrau or Hofbrau with the correct pronunciation in most American bars, you'll get a blank stare. I know I would not have known what the patron was ordering.
    Prost!

Works the other way around in Germany -- you get a one-eyed look when you ask for a "Low-en-brow."

Of course, you learn on the job while singing along at the Hofbräuhaus:

"Da ist, da ist, ein Hofbräuhaus..."

The u will make the ä sound different than a lone ä.

For example, Fräulein und Bäder -- froy-line and bay-duh.
