    From Fat Head’s:

AN IMPERIAL VERSION OF THE BEST IPA IN THE WORLD!

Something big is coming! Imperial Head Hunter is on the way, set to arrive next month. Featuring the same massive hop display of pine, grapefruit, citrus, and pineapple as our award-winning
classic, but with an extra imperial punch.

THIS 9.5% AB AND 95 IBU AGGRESSIVELY HOPPED WEST-COAST IMPERIAL IPA IS SET TO ARRIVE
ON STORE SHELVES THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 13.”

The base beer is outstanding, so I’ll be sure to try this one at the brewery. Cheers.

Wish Fat Heads would come to CA. Love head hunter ipa, and many others from them.

Head Hunter is a favorite IPA of mine, buy it by the 12 pack. I'm not keen on Imperial versions, too much alcohol for this old gent! I will however buy for my son and son-in-laws.

Easier said than done given the mammoth size of that state and its beer market. Rest assured that the Midwest would love to see Russian River beers here too

If you ever travel to your neighboring state of PA, specifically the Philly area, Russian River beers are available here. Some of the Belgian beers in bottles and both Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder on draft.

    Cheers!

No cans or bottles of BP or PtE yet? Since opening their production brewery in Windsor, RR has significantly increased their distribution footprint. I thought for sure SEPA would be getting bottles and/or cans of BP and elder by now.

    Nope.

I have listened to Vinnie speak on a number of podcasts and he always expresses a concern about the age (and storage conditions) of packaged versions of Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder. He typically states these beers are best consumed very fresh (e.g., within a month of the packaging date) and implicit to this continuous cold storage. My guess is that he permits sales of kegged versions of these beers since it is the norm during the supply chain (including the end retailer) for continuous cold storage which greatly improves the stability of these beers.

On a related note, several years ago we used to get a regular (but periodic) supply of draft Hill Farmstead beers. Shaun Hill was adamant that these beers be put on tap quickly after arrival to the Philly area market. Somehow he found out that one craft beer bar let one of his beers 'sit' for too long in their cold-room cellar and then he decided to stop sending his beers to the Philly area. That one bar ruined things for the entire Philly market. After many years (4-5 years?) he relaxed things and he will periodically send some Hill Farmstead kegs down this way but not nearly as often and widespread as the 'good old days'.

    Cheers!

I'm with Vinnie on this, but how long is too long? Currently, I believe the Denver area is getting bottles/cans of BP and PtE, and Bellingham Washington just started getting them. So how much additional time does it take for a RR truck to get to SEPA? A couple extra days? I'm not Vinnie, and of course he can do what he wants, but that doesn't sound like a good reason not to ship cans and bottles to me. As for his other concern (continuous cold storage of RR product), you'd have a very difficult time convincing me that SEPA is any less assiduous in the way they handle fragile IPAs then the West Coast is. So that doesn't ring true for me either.

I've met and spoken to Vinnie on several occasions, and I don't believe this is something he would lie about, but I suspect there may be some additional unspoken reasons for his decision not to ship bottles and cans of BP and elder to SEPA. But that's just my opinion.

It may be a matter of how long it sits at places along the supply chain (e.g., at the Wholesale Distributor)?
The majority of craft beer at my local beer retailers are at ambient temperature (e.g., on the shelves or sitting on the floor). Not ideal.

I will shoot you a podcast of Vinnie discussing the topic of freshness and age.

    Cheers!

I go to PA on a relatively frequent basis, but I tend to stay in the western half of the Keystone state. Philadelphia is a very long drive from here. Baltimore and Chicago are shorter drives. Hiwever when

Unfortunately I'm down in Norfolk/SE VA. I'm a bit of a slack BA in that I've NEVER done a brewery trip through NoVa. I've done trips through Baltimore but not NoVA... need to change that

Head hunter is the 947th best ipa according to beer advocate... how good could this possibly be?

Is this some sort of a weird joke?

Head Hunter is ranked #25 via BA:

Whoops you're right. I'm a huge HH fan and consider it one of the best ipas out there and I was appalled when I saw it in the 900s. Good correction on your part though, I was looking at the wrong ranking

Even a rating of #25 on the list likely doesn't accurately portray it's current popularity (in comparison to other IPAs on the list). Beers above it such as Alpine's Duet and Nelson, as well Ballast Point's Sculpin, are based on ratings compiled from years ago. I doubt there are very many members who would place those ipas in the top 25 now... I know the last few times I tried those beers I was very unimpressed, despite giving all three very high rating scores years ago.

10 or 15 years ago Sculpin, Duet and Nelson likely deserved to be in the top 25 (IMHO). However, I doubt very many consumers feel that way about them now.

FWIW I stopped drinking Alpine beers once the brewing switched to Green Flash. Alpine beers were excellent when they were brewed in the brewery in Alpine, CA.

    Cheers!
