Not a fan of their brown.
Favorite - Two Hearted - excellent beer
Least - Amber Ale - which was good - I have only had two offerings from Bells
This is my favorite part of the response. Two Hearted just isn't for me as well.
Least: Consecrator Doppelbock
Most: Oberon cans
Honorable mention: Hell Hath No Fury
Favs: Hopslam, Two Hearted, Black Note
Least: Midwestern Pale Ale, Venus
Favorite: Two Hearted
Least: Oarsman and Midwest Pale Ale
Honorable: Best Brown
Favorite: Expedition or Smitten
And yeah i agree Centennial is better than 2 hearted. I love bell's but they can be overhyped at times
Favorite -Expedition ( barely edging Third Coast Old Ale)
Least - Oarsman
Favorite: Expedition Stout (One of my favorite stouts from any brewery)
Least Favorite: Cherry Stout
Favorite: Cherry Stout and Hopslam
Least: Java Stout
Fav: Fresh Two Hearted on tap! :<3 :<3
Not Fav: Venus - A noble experiment gone horribly awry.
My favorite is their Amber. Just a really good take on the style. Their only offering that I have tried and did not care for was their Cherry Stout.
Favorite: Two Hearted (On Tap), Java Stout, "cellared 1 year...AT LEAST" Cherry Stout
Least Favorite: "fresh" Cherry Stout
I saw some discussion between a couple of guys about the Cherry Stout.
@Boomer4ES I TOTALLY agree with the whole cough syrup analogy...I get that too if it is fairly fresh. I can drink it but I don't care for the boozy, Chreomulsion flavor. However, if you properly cellar that beer for AT LEAST a year that flavor goes away totally and it becomes a really good beer and actually becomes one of my favorites by them. It really transforms into a different beer after aging to me. I'm wondering if maybe @JohnSnowNW had one with some age on it and that's why he didn't get that flavor.
I've had Cherry Stout a couple of times, and did not take note of the age when I was drinking them. If it's true the taste is reminiscent of cough syrup when young, I will count myself lucky that I got some older bottles.
Favorite: After having it again this year, Hopslam. There are a few close calls, but Hopslam still wins for me.
Least favorite: Midwestern "Pale Ale" ... while Mercury underwhelmed me a lot and Venus was indeed a bit of a weird mess, Midwestern was just a bad beer to me. Not good.
i like it. michigan cherries are not for everyone. very tart. i grew up mid mich and enjoy them quite a bit. maybe its an acquired taste. they clearly wouldnt keep making if if nobody was buying it. like u said, dif strokes for dif folks.
Favorite: Black Note
Least Favorite: Venus and Mercury. Both sucked hard
Thanks for the recommendation. I love Bell's, and I would love to try this out. No one has ever recommended aging it before, and I'm not sure I gave it a fair enough chance to try it myself. I have always had it on tap or fairly fresh in bottles. I may pick up a few singles and throw in the cellar just to see how it works for me. I do like the tartness of the cherries, but the flavor is just too strong and doesn't work for me. Thanks again.
The Quince was so fantastic. I was lucky enough to try it at a Bell's tap takeover a few months back and I fell in love. I only wish I could have taken some to go. You definitely can't drink too much in a sitting. It reminded me a lot of Boulevard's BBQ but was more robust and I think even more flavorful. Fantastic beer.
Overall a huge fan of Bell's.
Favorites: Expedition, HopSlam
With several in-betweens that see fridge space on rotation.
Favorite: Black Note
Least favorite: Mercury
edit: had originally said Venus.. but actually I dislike Mercury more.
Favorites: Two Hearted, Hopslam, Oarsman -(120 calories, great tasting beer if your calorie conscious)
Least: Cherry Stout
Favorite: Two Hearted Ale. It's a world class IPA.
Least Favorite: Brown Ale. It was very bland. For a Brown Ale it's not very malty. Not a terrible beer but I wouldn't seek it out.
Favorite: Quinannan Falls Lager
Two years ago, I was walking dog the street at sunset with my beagle and a red solo cup full of Double Cream, what a great beer. Best Brown Ale is probably the best brown ale, too, for regular distribution; super-girl friendly.
Least: Amber Ale, Christmas Ale, Two-Hearted
I haven't had the entire Bell's line-up, but of what I have had and rated here:
Highest rated: Black Note
Least Favorite: Expedition
One I'd most like to have again: Two Hearted
Two Hearted Ale
Bell's Oberon Ale
Bell's Kalamazoo Stout
Bell's Pale Ale
Bell's Expedition Stout
Third Coast Old Ale
Bell's Best Brown
Bell's Java Stout
Bell's Special Double Cream Stout
Bell's Cherry Stout
Bell's Black Note Stout
Favorite(s): Too many!!
Least: Porter or Lager of the Lakes (haven't tried Cherry Stout, fortunately as it sounds from most replying in this thread!)
Least Fave - Bell's Mercury
Favorite - Tie between Black Note and Two Hearted.
Favorite: X-Slam (blend of Expedition Stout and HopSlam...Usually shows up for Roll Out the Barrel party)
Least Liked: Cherry Stout
What does X-Slam taste like?? Curious...
Pure goodness...It is a perfect balance of the hops in the stout. I am a huge fan of Hopslam but find this mix far more enjoyable. You get the hops smell and taste but the stout seems to smooth it all out. Wished it was bottled!
Favorite: This One Goes To 11, Expedition Stout, Oberon, Oarsman
Least: Java Sout, Venus
Favorites: BBA Cherry Stout, Hopslam, Two Hearted, Expedition
Least Favorites: Amber Ale, Christmas Ale, Winter White Ale, Mars, Venus
Oh man. Thank you for saying this. The Bells Cherry stout is a medicinal abomination, and remains to this day my least favorite beer I've ever had, which is weird because I like most of what Bells puts out.
I get what you mean with the BBQ comparison, thought the quince really added an almost cherry like flavor to the beer. Truth is I didn't really even know what a quince was until I had this beer.
Favorite: Black Note/The Oracle/BA Expedition
Least Favorite: VENUS!!!! Ewww. How did this even make it to bottle.
Everything I've ever had from Bell's except the Venus has at least been pretty good. Great company but I don't know what they were thinking with the Venus.
Fave: Tie between Two Hearted and Expedition
Fav: Oberon, a summertime standard and Hopslam, the beer that got me into hops
Least: Mercury, unremarkable in every way
Least fav: Cherry stout, just a horrible beer.
