Hey folks, although I've been brewing for several years now, I just used flaked corn (maize) for the first time today, and noticed crazy amounts of sediment in my fermenter afterwards. anyone else experience this, and if so, is there anything I should know for the future to possibly avoid this? It looks like I will have to leave a significant portion of my beer behind to avoid siphoning it into my finished product.
    Thanks!

Did you mash the maize along with an enzymatic base malt?

    Yes, I mean, I think I did: 6lbs weyermann pils, 3 lbs 2-row.

Oh and I used 1 lb. of the flaked maize

I've used double that (2#s or up to 20%) 2 or 3 times and the beers were always crystal clear (unlike some flaked adjuncts)
Are you sure it was flaked? How long did you mash?

This beer was also crystal clear (I used whirlfloc tabs instead of Irish moss this time), but there was tons of precipitated sediment on the bottom. Just a LOT more than usual, and I figured it might be the corn adding to the trub. It was flaked corn, and I mashed for 70 minutes

Is this the only time you've used whirlfloc? Whirlfloc creates a lot of very fluffy look break material, this is normal and not related to the corn.

Ahh I wondered if it might be the whirlfloc. I just tried it for the first time, and the sediment did look rather fluffy. So maybe I need to let it settle in the kettle longer next time before I drain it off into my fermenter.
