Hey, I'll be traveling down there in late March for some seminar style export training, I was wondering what sort of bottleshops and/or breweries are down there, what are the good ones. I have already done some due diligence, but I did t find much right off the bat. Any recommendations? Ill be there with several colleagues, so I highly doubt anything 30+ minutes from FT Lauderdale would be appropriate to request of our rental car driver (so no trips up the panhandle). I've heard from forums I've read that Total Wine has ok selection- what is the skinny on that? Will I find some good locals, or just the regular DFH/Rogue/SA stuff? Is there any specialty shops down there that would have a good selection? Thanks!

Depending on where you are located, a trip to Boca may be within reach:

Bottle shops: Total Wine Fort Lauderdale has a good selection. Another good shop is Riverside Market, also in Fort Lauderdale. The Fundy Buddha is in Boca Raton - about 20-30 minutes away. The closest World of Beer is in Coconut Creek, also 20-30 minutes away. Your best bet for bars, and to find local stuff, are Tap42 in Fort Lauderdale, Laser Wolf in Fort Lauderdale, or Fat Cats in downtown Fort Lauderdale. If you're with work colleagues, I suggest Tap42.

The best local* stuff is not bottled (Funky Buddha, Due South), but the Florida bottled stuff (Cigar City, etc.) is usually pretty available in the stores down there, including Total Wine, as is Terrapin and some other regionals. If you're trying to find that kind of stuff without going too far out of your way, I suggest hitting the cluster of stores off SE 17th St in Fort Lauderdale. SE 17th is about a mile or two north on US 1 from the Ft. Lauderdale airport. A couple of blocks east from US 1 is a big shopping center with a Publix and a Total Wine. That's on the south side of the street (right if you're coming from 1). On the north side of the intersection is a Crown Wine and Spirits. If that's not enough selection, head a couple miles north on US 1 and there's a plaza with a Whole Foods and an ABC Store (right side of US 1). Usually between the ABC Store, the Whole Foods and that Total Wine, you can get whatever is very recent. The seasonals don't always hang around, but there's usually a good selection if you're not trying to find one thing in particular.

EDIT: *When I say "local" up there, I mean South Florida.

Thanks guys! Ya I'll be with work colleagues, so the hardcore expedition I would normally make by myself will have to be shelved, as the rental car is for the group, and I don't feel like renting a car for the day and pay out the ass in those hidden fees that take the advertised rate of $49 or whatever and you end up paying $120.

I've been visiting Boca once or twice a year pretty much forever, and I'm kicking myself for not checking BA before. I'll be heading to Funky Buddah for sure, instead of that other brewery in town that shall remain nameless.

    Thanks all!

threadjacking a little here, but it's related--is there anything on, or at least close to, the ft. lauderdale beaches? i'm visiting family with limited transport, and will be staying closer to the touristy spots. any suggestions?

Most of the bars on the beach carry only BMC beers. However, a block off the beach (near Sunrise Blvd & A1A), there is a bar called The Parrot Lounge that has a decent selection of craft beers. http://www.parrotlounge.com/

Another bar about 3 miles from the beach (5-10 minute drive) is Tap42. They are a little pricey, but have an excellent selection of beers on tap: http://www.tap42.com/

If you want to buy bottles to take home, your best bet is Total Wine & More, which is about 2 miles from the beach: http://www.totalwine.com

All the stores on SE 17th St that I mentioned above are not too far from the FTL beaches. Laser Wolf (http://laserwolf.com/) isn't too far away, either. Drive down A1A to the end of the beach, then take Sunrise west. Bear right on the big curve and go south a mile or two to SE 17th. Or stay on Sunrise and make a left at the McDonald's (NE 4th). The bar's on the right just before the train tracks. It's got a bit of a hipster vibe, but the place is run by beer freaks and they consistently have a good tap selection and good prices.
