Because this is a non-secret, which wouldn't have been kept even if it was one, I post it here. Not to draw any more attention to the release than there'll already be, but just to say that I wish this ironic and self-deprecating sense of humor were even more prevalent in that sizable segment of the craft beer world which treats Rare Beer like a mythic idol of unparalleled devotion...

I, personally, shed a merely mortal and human tear for all the unicorns which Fremont and Perennial must have slaughtered in order to produce this beer. But I am nevertheless consoled by the thought that their lives mustn't have been taken in vain...

I have it on good authority that Fremont only used their tears in the making of this beer. My understanding is that no Unicorns were actually harmed or slain, though they were required to watch endless "Friends" reruns (leading to a rather considerable surfeit of Unicorn tears I understand).

From the lexicon of record: “Once a unicorn sheds a tear, it dies within the hour.” This is why unicorn tears are even harder to come by than unicorns themselves, and that anything made with them must be the rarest and most special thing of all…

But we can still insist on believing that, in the last moments of their lives, the treatment they received was humane, and that their glorious sacrifice, while tragic, was just the unavoidable precondition for the creation and our enjoyment of this heavenly liquid...

Agree, I really like the tongue in cheek irony Fremont is using with Unicorn Tears. Of course for the yin of unicorn tears, there is the yang of:

Unicorn Shmunicorn, what about those HFoD cans?

(Just want to know if I should be on the lookout for something else hoppy to bring my brother in law next Thursday... :-) )

While apparently not yet in cans, the latest iteration of HFoD - featuring El Dorado and the Hop Formerly Known As Equinox - is now on tap at the UBG and available for crowler fills. In a pinch, this could do for your trip, though those tallboys may well be imminent.

There were new Pride Kölsch cans available for sale, and I will echo a few previous comments that Fremont is doing some wonderful and creative new stuff with their packaging design. The illustration, coloring, and dedication on these are especially beautiful, as is the charitable component. It also happens to be a delicious, refreshing, and well-executed Kölsch.

Lastly, and as an aside, my visit to the brewery today was enhanced by the presence of two NW Forum regulars (and one wife and dog thereof), whom I'd arranged to meet for the first time, and who showed up no doubt despite their better judgment. There were no hugs, but firm handshakes, laughter, and good conversation were abundant - along with a lot of stray fur. I won't out them, lest they be tainted by their association with me, but I will say it tends to be a good thing to meet people you only know one way in the real world, and see them in something closer to their full dimensions. None of us are caricatures, but sometimes some of us play them online...

The Pride cans are amazing, I picked one up at Bottleworks earlier today.

Gonna hold off on taking a crowler with me, they don't always seal perfectly and I'm not taking any chances. My brother-in-law hasn't had a hoppy beer in a long time so I'll be taking 3-Way cans unless things change in the next week or so.

My first visit to the Urban Beer Garden was delightful. The wife and I enjoyed the beers, the most agreeable atmosphere, and the chance to put faces and real names to a couple local BA's.

Our paths will cross again. I look forward to the opportunity.

Any word as to if the BAUT will see distro? I would like a bottle, but not so much that I will stand in line for hours.

Good times, you two! One of my favorite parts was when vurt and the missus trolled me, wearing my Sounders jersey, on their way out with hearty rendition of a Timbers song. As a memento of our gathering, I'm sure you'll find Isaac's hair on your clothing for weeks to come. :grinning:

Cheers to you both, and let's make sure it's not the last time!

Gonna try the BAUT this weekend at WA Brewer's Festival. I have a feeling Holy Mountain is releasing Midnight Still variant(s) on the same day (the 24th) so want to know which one to go grab. Most likely will just do Fremont and see if HM still has anything at least on tap after.

Let me know how it is. I was planning on trying it, but then realized the Sounders game is at 10am so I won't be there at opening.

Irs veey good; first sip i really dug the underlying stout flavor. From then on out tbe cherry takes over a bit but the barrel and stout still show up. Not medicinal in any way which is usually what concerns me abouf cherry as an adjunct.

Its on tap again tomorrow at 3pm at tne festival too.

Ill definitely be waiting in line for this next Saturday.

I heard from a couple friends that work at Fremont that they will be waiting in line for this beer on Saturday. I'm really surprised that Fremont isn't at least holding bottles for their employees, instead making them wait in line for beer that they helped create. After trying it at HHC, I understand how good it is, but it seems as if Fremont cares more about max profitz than helping their employees. @Texwild, is this true?

In my experience (for what it's worth), this couldn't be further from the truth. Fremont seems to take care of their employees better than (or at least as good as) any other brewery that I'm aware of. You seem to have a bone to pick.

I don't have a bone to pick whatsoever. I am just very surprised that they told their employees that they may not be getting an allotment held for them. It is the complete antithesis of what they have done in the past. Sorry if I came off angry, just looking for some clarity, that is it.

Bottle shops don't always let their employees have first dibs at limited release beers that come into the store. [shrug]

That's an interesting viewpoint. Do most of the restaurants you go to make sure their employees have all the food they need before serving their customers?

Edit: And do you really think they have any obligation to?

It's common practice for breweries to hold bottles for employees... but that's just where I live.

I never claimed that they have an obligation to save bottles. I was merely asking for some clarity as I stated before, since the brewery has always held bottles for employees. It seems as if my tone is coming off as angry but in all actuality I probably haven't had enough coffee this morning.

With a limit of one per person, there might not be very much of BA UT. Who knows. I'm going to be out of town so it doesn't really impact me.

I could see this being on a case by case basis. If the bottle count is very low, I could understand wanting it to hit the customers first. I am more than willing to bet some key pieces of info are missing here.

Maybe my morning coffee hasn't kicked in yet, but I'm confused by your logic. Because Fremont isn't holding back some of this beer specifically for their employees to buy (and is making them stand in line to obtain bottles), that indicates they care more about profits than helping their employees? Sorry, I'm just not seeing the connection between those two statements.

Are you suggesting that Fremont should have provided a certain amount of this beer gratis to their employees? If so, I agree that certainly would be a nice thing for them to do, but I don't think I've ever heard of any other brewery doing something like that. Certainly not for a limited release beer such as this. I guess I'm a bit surprised that this is something you seem to expect Fremont should be doing for their employees (assuming I'm interpreting your statement correctly).

Regardless of what Fremont is or isn't doing for their employees for this release (according to your statement), I'm just not seeing why you would think this indicates that they care more about maximizing profits than helping their employees.

Really? Even for limited release stuff?

In the case of Rusty Nail and I expect the BA UT, production seems to have been pretty small, and so the beer is pretty strictly allocated. Given the limited amount of beer made, it makes sense to me that they wouldn't hold anything back for their employees.

I could see a larger brewery like FW holding back a certain amount of bottles for their employees as a courtesy, but then they tend to make a lot of pretty much everything they produce. It's hard for me to compare their situation to Fremont's.

I don't know. I certainly agree that it would be a very nice thing for Fremont to do, but I guess I'm not seeing the sense of obligation (and the suggestion that they're being overly greedy because they're making their employees stand in line for a limited release beer like everyone else).

Yes, even for very limited release stuff, sub 600 bottle counts.. My local brewery does it on the regular. I know this because I know people who work there. I mean they pay for the beer, but they don't have to wait in line with the rest of us because... that's kind of nuts. But that's just my opinion.

To be honest, I agree with you on that, and would be curious to hear the explanation. The OP's original comment about this behavior suggesting that Fremont is only interested in maximizing profits is what threw me off a bit. I couldn't tell if he was suggesting that there was a problem with Fremont's behavior because they weren't allowing employees to receive an allocation of free beer (even for what I've heard will be a very limited release), or if it was because they were being forced to stand in line to buy their allocation (like everyone else). It's actually pretty hard for me to believe that Fremont would do the latter (though anything is possible I suppose), as that would simply contribute to making an already difficult day (because of the long lines) even more difficult.

WTF, dude?!? This aggression will not stand, man. If you were simply looking for some clarity, you could have simply sent @Texwild a BM, or could have made an appointment to sit down with him over a beer at the UBG. You had options other than to call him out in a public forum --- for the second time no less --- but you chose (again) to call into question his integrity here in our little NW forum. You have 7 posts on BA and 4 of them are attempts to disparage @Texwild .

So, you either do have a bone to pick, or you lack any sense of grace or courtesy.

    I call bullshit.

I meant no aggression and I did not mean to call him out. As I have said multiple times before, I am only looking for some clarity on this subject. I have two friends that work at Fremont West that are fairly upset about this subject that feel like they have no one to talk to, so I offered to ask @Texwild about it here. How in the world have I disparaged him? Maybe the "max profitz" joke was in bad taste, but the comment seems to have been blown out of proportion. I never once meant to be aggressive and I feel like the only integrity that has been questioned on this page is my own because almost all of you feel like Fremont can do no wrong. I love Fremont and I will continue to support them, not only because of the great beer that they brew but also because of their commitment to making this city and this world a better place.

Might I suggest that if your friends are unhappy with their work situation and/or associated compensation that they take the matter up with their employer/supervisor.

You have made multiple posts here on behalf of a couple of your friends that work part time at Fremont complaining about Fremont's treatment of their employees. Once about not getting a shot at limited releases before the general public and also regarding part time employees not receiving the same benefits as full time employees (which is a ridiculous statement since that's pretty much a universal thing ... plus you mentioned that your friends do still get free beer). Seems like your buddies should go work a part time job elsewhere and see what kind of benefits they get.
