“Thou shalt not attempt to lose weight during fresh hop season.”

(Words I live - and gain weight - by. I should probably throw festbier season in there, too.)

Am at Ex Novo with a glass of fresh hop elliot. It really is the best time of the year! The elliot is everything I want in a FH ipa, with lots of fresh green tobacco and watermelon on the nose. Also tried the fresh hops pils... Mehhhh...

    This is excellent news.

I am about 10 minutes away from leaving on a bike ride towards the Beaverton Ex Novo, in hopes of procuring some FH Eliot for the household.

Sorry to hear their FH Pilsner isn't great. I'm still going to have some, since they went to all the trouble and everything. But their Perle Haggard is not one of my favorite local pilsners anyway.

I’ve not gained any weight, thankfully, during the plague although my beer intake has increased due to previously draft only breweries now canning. I and my wife walk 8-10 miles per day. And given fresh hop season is soon to be upon us, we will do a Whole30 during September (except for drinking my fill and at least one other person’s fill) of fresh hops. So, a Whole30 with regular fresh hop cheats. Should lose weight if we continue to walk.

But really, fresh hop season leads right into Thanksgiving, and then Christmas. So I'm not sure losing weight is even an option, ever, anymore. It certainly hasn't worked out that way for me. Working from home 100% of the time since March definitely hasn't made it any easier.

Agreed. In our house, with child, it goes Halloween > my birthday > Thanksgiving > Christmas > New Year’s. This, of course, overlaps with snowboard season, and it just isn’t right to not follow up a day on the hill without some pints.

This upcoming time of year makes me feel like a Hobbit with all their meals throughout the day.

But mine are spread out through fall and winter.

    And mine are beer. :sunglasses:

Yeah, in my family we have a wedding anniversary in September plus one birthday in each month of October, November, and December, in addition to all the holidays (and accompanying beer seasons). Lots of reasons to celebrate, and food is very important in my house, thanks mainly to me.

There's nothing worse than stepping on the scale thinking you've done pretty well lately, might have even lost a few pounds, only to find that you've gained five (something that happened to me this week). I'm dreading having to wear pants again—at some point I will have to go back to the office. I hope I still have a few pairs that fit.

I’d ... uh ... like to squeeze that event in my aforementioned series of celebrations above, right between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

(I’m glad my wife’s not on this forum!)

I just opened a crowler of Ex Novo FH Perle Haggard Pilsner.

The fresh hop aroma smacked me in the face in the best possible way.

Welcome, once again, to the best time of the year for beer.

Main reason I remember it is (1) my wife has been reminding me incessantly lately and (2) a year ago we were in France celebrating our 20th. We were in Salon-de-Provence exactly one year ago today, where the town was celebrating the 75th anniversary of its liberation from the Nazis. I remember that because it's also my dad's birthday (today is his 80th).

This is a little seafood feast at a restaurant in the town square we just randomly happened upon (I think I mentioned food being important in our family).

This is part of a display of mostly Jeeps and other American WWII hardware right in the same town square during the festivities. People were dressed up in French Resistance garb, period costumes etc. celebrating the liberation.

    Nice!

We were in France last year from late August to mid-September, rented a car and drove around the country with my parents, who are only a few years younger than yours.

I didn’t discover a whole lot in the ways of beer there, but in Normandy my dad picked a 750mL of cider from the grocery store that tasted and felt almost more like champagne. Easily the best cider I’ve ever had.

Half the time my wife and I don’t even remember our anniversary until after it’s passed, but I’ll try a little harder this year.

Funny coincidence we were there at the same time. We did the same thing except without the parents, just me, my wife, and our daughter. Drove about 1500 miles total (IIRC), from Paris to Loire Valley to Provence to Marseille to Dijon and many points in between, mostly on little narrow local roads. My wife has made me promise not to drive on the next trip we are planning to Italy, if we can ever leave the U.S. again. I got one speeding ticket, which I contested and eventually got reversed, so I'm not sure what her problem was with my driving—maybe it was my constant outbursts of obscenities. Roundabouts are awesome.

Likewise, I didn't discover much in terms of beer there, but that was OK. Food made up for it.

I confess I chuckle whenever I read this. My wife had the same reaction. We picked up a car in Lyon and drove down to Marseille and back (and places in between). It was definitely stressful (even getting gas was an adventure), and oddly enough, my wife was also treated to a frequent string of obscenities (which for some reason she seemed to find annoying and not particularly reassuring).

The local Monoprix always had a fairly decent selection of Belgians, but after 3 weeks of doing without, I couldn't wait to have a glass of Bodhizafas. Definitely did eat a lot of great food and drank a lot of great wine though...

I wouldn't mind partaking in this little feast myself. Not being greedy, just a little.
Good lord, what do they do when they go all out? Toss foie gras on there? But then again, I don't think they do "all-out" the way we do this side of the 49th parallel on this side of the pond.

So I actually drove down to Ex Novo to grab some FH Elliott but they only only had crowlers of FH Perle Haggard. I grabbed one knowing I would not actually drink more than 10% of it , but I wanted to taste some of that sweet FH Nectar. Now the crowler wasn't super cold when I opened it, but it tasted really flat and wasn't very good. Unfortunately not what I was hoping for, but i am hoping to snag a can of FH when the next batch hits production.

    You might be surprised.

There are plenty of places where the amount of food you get with a prix fixe order is fairly reasonable. Quality is typically very high (food is a serious business in France), but portion size isn't always over the top (at some places, you can also control how much you want to eat by cutting back on the number of courses).

But then there's Michelin 3 star dining. The wife and I went to the Paul Bocuse restaurant in Lyon during our last visit to France. I won't describe everything we ate, but suffice it to say the amount of food you get is incredible. I will describe the dessert course however.

We were sitting by ourselves at a large, expansive table (comfort is perceived as very important at 3 star restaurants, and so the tables for two are sizeable). For dessert, the restaurant literally builds a dessert bar at the end of your table. The bar includes all kinds of tarts, pies and cakes, various pastries, 3 or 4 different types of ice cream and sorbet, 5 or 6 different types of fresh fruit, and so on. There are also all manner of syrups, creams, nougat, custards, whipcreams, etc. Obviously, there is no way you can consume even a fraction of what's on offer, though the staff are more than happy to accommodate you if you want to give it a try. Keep in mind that the cheese course is it's own separate course, with typically 40 or 50 different cheeses to choose from (as with the dessert course, you can have as many different cheese portions as you want, with any sort of accompaniment that might interest you).

It's really more of a show as opposed to just a dining experience. Service is impeccable, acoustics are outstanding, atmosphere is lovely, furniture and cutlery are first class (there's a special hassock for mademoiselle to place her purse or handbag), and of course the wine selection is superb (some places will have a good beer selection as well, but it's typically an afterthought with Haute Cuisine).

It's not the sort of thing you want to do very often (it usually takes a day or two to recover - Cynthia always complains that she feels like she has a cannonball in her stomach after a meal like this), but we try to include one such meal during our trips to France.

And oh by the way... Foie Gras really is a "thing" over there. You can get it pretty much everywhere and prices are fairly reasonable (at least in comparison to what I'm accustomed to paying over here).

You and Elizabeth should go check it out sometime!

I got a sample pour of it at the brewery as well, along with my glasses of FH Elliott. Unfortunately, my reaction was similar to yours. The aroma was attractive (lots of green, earthy tobacco), but I didn't get any FH character on the palate and it did seem a bit flat. Could have been that it just didn't show well next to the Elliott, but I wasn't tempted to get a glass.

I'm sorry to hear that. My crowler was beautifully aromatic, yet lacking in FH flavor with the too-bitter finish I always get from Perle Haggard, but definitely not flat.

This is an interesting theme. My FH Perle Haggard crowler was extremely flat, even with an aggressive pour. The nose was nice, but without carb, the flavor didn't follow through.

This wasn’t even the largest platter. And considering how much seafood was included, the price was surprisingly reasonable. We left a few whelks on the tray—that wasn’t anyone’s favorite—but we managed to polish off most of this between the three of us. Plus a beer or two, of course.

Have no idea, but your post just reminded me...

I called over to Laurelwood on Sunday, and the manager I spoke to said she was "pretty sure" the brewer was going to make a FH Work horse IPA this year. However, it's not out yet and she wasn't sure when it would be released (she guestimated that it would probably be sometime in September).
