LOL! I had the same reaction. "No more fh beer, I told myself," but then I saw the tap list at Roscoe's this past Saturday, and of course that's all I ended up ordering.

Wife and I are in Buenos Aires now, so no more fh temptation.

Not gonna lie: I still keep checking the Digital Pour app looking for convenient, nearby fresh hops.

Then I remind myself, "Diminishing returns." Probably time to post a season-end list and make it official.

@jason_nwx, thanks for flagging the Logsdon FH beers! Grabbed them at Belmont Station last night and they were excellent, the FH UE being the better of the two with just such a wonderful Sterling hop nose.

I had what I imagine is my last FH beer of the season tonight. Made it a Block 15 evening with the last of my Fresh Catch followed by my last Sticky Hands.

Both were “old,” at least by my usual IPA timeframe. But delicious nonetheless. Sticky Hands in particular had this wonderful dank and slightly vegetal hop pellet note that I just loved.

One of my friends brought me a Fremont Head Full of Fresh Hops and that beer was delicious. I'm jealous of all of your fresh hop options.

Well, as we are all aware, the season has come to a close. Personally, I had my last two unique FH brews last night: the El Dorado/Chinook and the ADHA-1624 versions of Stoup's Fresh Hop Fiend series. The base beer underneath the FHF brews is really tasty, but the FH character was pretty lacking on these two (though that makes sense given they were 3 and 6 weeks old by the time I consumed them, respectively).
This is my personal end-of-season awards section (roughly in order of preference):

    Tier one:
    Fremont - Cowiche Canyon (Mosaic/Citra/Simcoe/Ekuanot)
Stoup - Fresh Hop Fiend (Simcoe)
    Crux - Pert Near (McKenzie)
Holy Mountain - Cone and Cone (Citra)
    Burke-Gilman - Fresh Hopotheosis
    Matchless - Farm Harvest (Centennial)

    Tier two:
    Structures - FH Junior (Cashmere)
Fremont - Head Full of Fresh Hops (Mosaic/HBC-586)
Holy Mountain - FH Astral Projection (Mosaic)
Migration - Fresh Outta Portland (Strata)
Fremont - Field to Ferment (Centennial)
    Breakside - Wanderjack (Strata)
    Cloudburst - Wishy Washy (Amarillo)
    Livinghaus - FH Herman (Strata)
    Structures - FH Fuzz (Simcoe/Citra)
Bale Breaker - Home Grown (Simcoe)
Ferment - Fresh Hop Centennial Pale Ale (...Centennial)
White Bluffs - FH NOG (Citra/Simcoe)
Future Primitive - Amarillo Wet Hop (Amarillo)

    Tier 3:
    Ft. George - Fresh (Luminosa)
HUB - Abominable Fresh Hop (Centennial)
    Everybody's - Head Stash (Simcoe)
Lumberbeard and Whistlepunk - Hop Rats (Zappa)
Stoup - Fresh Hop Fiend (El Dorado/Chinook)
Holy Mountain - Talus FH IPA (Talus) [this one actually was a lot better about two weeks in than it was fresher]
Cloudburst and Holy Mountain - Wetwired (Mosaic)
Ft. George - Rock, Paper, Chinook (Chinook)
Burke-Gilman - Seems So Long Since We Walked In the Moonlight (Strata)
    Structures - Fresh Wave (Comet/Citra)
Mirage and Great Notion - A Ten-Minute Set (Cascade)
Structures - Amarillo Fresh Hop West Coast IPA (Amarillo)
Stoup - Fresh Hop Fiend (ADHA-1624)
Burke-Gilman - You Know, I'm Something of a Hops Fan Myself (Strata)
Machine House - Fresh Hop Simcoe Bitter (Simcoe)
Single Hill - Five Sisters (Citra)
    Bizarre - Garlands (Strata)
Single Hill and Breakside - On the Road Again (Strata/Simcoe/Sabro)

    Tier 4:
Dru Bru - Fresh Hop IPA (Centennial)
    Lumberbeard - Fresh Dreams (Strata)
Little Beast - Green Keeper (Centennial)
Flying Lion - ADHA-218 Experimental Fresh Hop IPA (ADHA-218)
Machine House - Fresh Hop Centennial Pale Ale (Centennial)

The breweries that I found the most consistently impressive are probably not going to be a surprise.
Brewery top five (alphabetical): Cloudburst, Fremont, Holy Mountain, Stoup, Structures.

The hops I enjoyed the most this season were a mix of expected (to me) and a couple with which I was not really familiar:
Top Hops: Amarillo, Cashmere, Chinook, Citra, Luminosa, McKenzie, Mosaic, Simcoe

snaotheus, Reidrover, vurt and 2 others like this.

I also kept track of what we, as a regional forum, felt about the season. Admittedly, the stience is... not robust here. For each beer that anyone made a comment here about, I made a vague judgement on whether I got the impression the poster had a positive, negative, or more neutral impression of the beer. Proclamations such as 'best of the season' etc did not receive any additional weight: everything was coded either positive/negative/neutral. It is somewhat weighted by numbers, however, so even if one person had a specific beer and thought it was the single greatest thing they'd ever tasted... if no one else tried it (or at least commented about it), it didn't have enough data points to make a meaningful appearance in my 'analysis.' Also, there were a handful of posts that just vaguely referenced a brewery, or that didn't specify which hop varietal was used for brews that were brewed multiple times with different hops. *shrug* Like I said... the science is weak. Also, all information was gleaned from this thread. I did not go looking up brewery websites to see what hops were used, etc. I just relied on our own self-reporting.

So, without further ado, the BA PNW FH '22 end of season awards!

heck, maybe if anyone is still reading this we can get some engagement: I'll leave the groups large, and folks can vote out of each category who they think the top five should be. If anyone cares, I can come back in like a week or two and give the final rankings? Though really I don't think anyone is checking this thread anymore anyway, so this list is probably it.

The class of '22 HOF finalists (this is in chronological order of when they first appeared in the thread):
Ex Novo - FH Eliot (Strata)
    Breakside - FH Wanderjack (Strata)
Migration - Fresh Outta Portland (Strata)
    Foreland - Supersymmetry (Strata)
Breakside - FH Evan Is My Homie (Mosaic)
    Great Notion - FH Ripe
Ft. George - Rock, Paper, Chinook (Chinook)
    VIA - Proper Dose
    Occidental - FH Pilsner
Breakside - What Fresh Beast (Talus)
    Single Hill - Five Sisters
    Sunriver - FH Bondi Beach
Ft. George - Strata Architect (Strata)
    Ft. George - Fresh (Luminosa)
    Breakside - FH IPA (Cascade)
Fremont - Field to Ferment (Centennial)
Bend Brewing Company - Fresh Trop
Machine House - FH Pale Ale With Centennial (Centennial)
Grains of Wrath - FH Built for Speed

Bale Breaker and Cloudburst - Citra Slicker (Citra)

    Breakside
    Ex Novo
    Fremont
    Ft. George
    Grains of Wrath
    Single Hill
    Sunriver

(the most controversial brewery of the season aka the one with the most variance): Ruse

    Forum's Top Hops (also alphabetical):
    Amarillo
    Chinook
    HBC-586
    Mosaic
    Strata

(the most controversial/opinion dividing hop of the season): Centennial

I’d say it’s safe to call this season over, but with that said I was somehow able to snag a pour of Sante Adairius’s Idaho 7 FH beer on a slow night at their Oakland location. (The password is “please.”)

No idea its age, but I think it came out within the past week or so. Some FH character, but nothing really stands out now that a few days have gone by. The season ended like the Sopranos, abruptly!

Got off work about 4:30 this afternoon, and decided to roll over to Wander. On my journey, a fellow Hobo was headed in the opposite direction, headed to Juxt. Solved both of my issues; where to drink and where to eat. The had a FH Idaho 7 brew from Wheelie Hop (maybe Hop a Wheelie, but I think that's a boneyard beer. Shrug.) in Seattle. Was solid, but, again, perhaps that's not the hop for me. The other hobos who had it, seemed to like it more than I did, so, if ya see it, give it a shot. Why not?

I *LOVE* that you did this kind of analysis - right up my alley! FWIW, here's my top five in order from the list:

    Breakside - FH IPA (Cascade)
Ft. George - Fields of Green (HBC-586)
    Breakside - FH Wanderjack (Strata)
Fremont - Field to Ferment (Centennial)
Migration - Fresh Outta Portland (Strata)

That said, I sadly never came across Headful of Fresh Hops or What Fresh Beast, both of which were favorites the year before.

    My 2022 Fresh Hop Season:

    Numbers
    • Number of fresh hop beers I tried this year: 69 (fewest since 2019)
    • Number of different hops: 18
    • Most popular hops: Centennial (15), Strata (13), and Citra (8)
    Favorites
Listed in the order I tried them:
    • Ex Novo Fresh Hop Eliot IPA (Crosby Hop Farm Centennial)
    • Fort George Rock, Paper, Chinook Fresh Hop Pale Ale (Chinook)
    • Occidental Fresh Hop Pilsner (Centennial)
    • Great Notion Fresh Hop Ripe IPA (Citra)
    • Breakside Fresh Hop Wanderlust (Mosaic)
    • Barley Brown's Fresh Hop Pallet Jack IPA (Mosaic)
    • Grains of Wrath Fresh Hop Built for Speed IPA (Goschie Farms Strata)
    • Ruse Fresh Hop Wolves in the Rain IPA (Mosaic)
    • Georgetown Fresh Hop Bodhizafa IPA (CLS Farms Citra)
    • Machine House Fresh Hop Strata IPA (Crosby Hop Farms Strata)
    Surprises
    • The astounding difference between the two versions of Ex Novo FH Eliot with fresh Centennial hops from two different farms, canned a week apart. The version with Goschie Farms Centennials was very good, but the version with Crosby Hop Farm Centennials was extraordinary.
    • Hetty Alice Super Fresh! IPA (Amarillo) had a frankly amazing bounty of fresh hop aroma and flavor. An eye-opening effort from one of the newest breweries in Portland.
    • The number of really good FH pale ales I enjoyed this year, including Ferment Fresh Hop Centennial Pale Ale, Ex Novo FH Intergalactic Pale Ale, Away Days Deadline Day FH Pale Ale, and Fremont Field to Ferment FH Pale Ale.

    MGarret Initiate (86) Aug 13, 2015 Oregon

Looking through my list (close to 60 FH beers tried this year), I think the single best one was Von Ebert Volatile Substance (Mosaic).

Other excellent ones were from the usual suspects (Breakside, Ft George, Fremont, Ruse, Barley Browns, Single Hill), plus a few I haven't seen mentioned here yet:
    • Loowit Lando Hoprissian (Centennial)
    • Threshold Centennial Cold IPA (more FH cold IPAs, please!)
    • Bend Fresh Trop
    • Varietal Wet Equity
Next year I need to have a bit more patience waiting out the initial run of strata beers - just not my favorite hop. And it's always good to accept some serendipity in FH season - seems like GN Ripe and Cowiche totally missed me this year, but I got to try some great ones I couldn't track down last year (Volatile Substance, Pallet Jack) as well as some excellent ones from breweries I'd never tried before (see: Loowit and Threshold).

Time for some lagers and Crysknife!

FH Season Review (a few random notes and personal tier rankings)
    - Outside Cascadia, I had fresh hops from Colorado, Nevada, New Jersey, and Wisconsin
    - Fresh Hops on the Pond (at Bend Brewing the weekend after Sisters) doubled the number of taps from the last time I visited and has become the Bend FH festival I'd hoped for since moving here in 2012.
    - After missing the last two seasons, Single Hill seemed to come out of nowhere. Distro to Bend is limited, but man are they on my radar now (I've found lots to like in their non-FH offerings too)
    - Personal highlight of the season: meeting @BrewsoBrewco and tasting Oakshire's Citra FH beer that had just been carbed that morning off the zwickel.
    - If I had to pick one to take the crown it would be the Deschutes 1320 for the unique flavor (sweet/spicy like a habanero or other fruity hot pepper but without the heat) amongst the tropical base flavors and a healthy dollop of fruitcup.
    - I predict HBC 586 will be Citra/Mosaic huge

Ahh what a time it was. There are few things in life I find more enjoyable than hoping on my bike after work on a nice September evening and making my way to one of the fine establishments in this city serving up fresh hops.

Once again some my very favorites were pilsners. More of those please.

HBC 586 was a new favorite hop for this year's bounty.

Barring any fresh hops I find in Japan later this week (which is highly likely), I ended Fresh Hop Season 2022 with 73 uniques. I had two HBC-586 fresh hops last year (Pint Size IPA and Stoup's Italian Pils) which were absolutely stunning, so it's awesome to see the number increase exponentially this year. My favorite fresh hop this year was probably Wetwired in a serious return to it's glorious original form.

I can tell you a place where you can pick up a bottle of Sankt Gallen's fresh hop, if you feel like going to Mizonokuchi. I didn't buy it yesterday, so it's probably still there.

Also, at least as of two days ago, I can tell you two places that had Shiga Kogen's fresh hop pilsner on tap. Same neighborhood, though. But one of the places has super cheap oysters.

Last Wednesday, Arch Bridge Taphouse posted on Facebook that they received cans of a new fresh hop beer from Fast Fashion. The beer is called "Catch of the Day," and it's a fresh hop IPA "brewed exclusively with Segal Ranch Anchovy Hops."

Here's what Fast Fashion said about Anchovy hops last December:

“Anchovy is an experimental hop developed by Segal Ranch in Yakima, Washington. It’s quite aromatic, we get notes of watermelon hard candy, raspberry, and pine. Segal is known for growing legendary cascade but they have a wonderful r and d program as well and we sponsored this hop after doing sensory on a few experimental varietals from them last year during hop selection. By sponsoring it they were able to grow it up to an acre this year. The crop went/is going to us and some of our friends throughout the industry.”

New fresh hops in November? How the hell about that.

Its still a very nice Fresh Hop, plus kudos to Double Mountain for doing the refillable bottles.
Really nice actually..better than i remember Killer Green being in years past.

Tried it Uber fresh at the Hood River fh fest and absolutely hated it. In hindsight, maybe it just needed some additional bottle age to round out the fh flavor. :sunglasses:

It's possible. I found it kinda simple and even rough in the past, real fresh. But it was more rounded this time. maybe the 2 months made the difference, or maybe I had just had 2 porters and it just seemed like it was better!

We discussed it in passing earlier on in the thread, but I have legitimately found this to be the case on occasion, even for FH and FH flavour.
It's unpredictable, though, which just adds to the mystery and magic of FH season.

I thought I was done, but then I saw cans of Fast Fashion Catch of the Day IPA at ABV last Sunday, right there in front of me. Figured it was still fresh enough, and I was curious about the Anchovy hops, so I went for it.

Despite the price (north of 6 bucks a can) and my general skepticism of Fast Fashion's brewing model (never the same beer twice! Feed your FOMO!), I'm not sorry I gave in to curiosity.

The nose is indistinctly frooty, but the flavor is really interesting: pine, grape-flavored hard candy, gummi bears, and a twang of chewable vitamin. (A couple articles I've found on Anchovy hops mention "watermelon Jolly Rancher," but I didn't get that. Alas.) Bit of spruce comes through on the breath at the finish. Not enough bitterness, but I'm grateful for what's there.

    I'm glad I tried it.

This was at Bonus Track in Shimokitazawa. Outdoor space with food vendors and record stores and artist shops. My daughter said “this feels like Portland” and we all agreed.

We bought the Fresh Myst can at TDM 1874 in Shimokitazawa earlier in the evening.

Had three different cans from Uchu Brewing last night and those are probably the best beers we’ve had on this trip. That brewery is just as good as anything at home.

Dang! I was hoping there would be some fishy/salty thing with that name. I love anchovies on pizza.

    I spoke too soon.

THIS is the my final fresh hop for 2022.

Found it in the basement foothill at Yodobashi Camera in Kyoto. It's a small brewery outside Kyoto that operates on a little hop farm. Ran out of time to drink it in Japan, so I brought it home with me and will have it this weekend.
