I have a buddy that's traveling to Bishop, CA next month and he offered to take an empty box to fill up while he's there. I've never been to California and he has no interest in craft beer so I'm not really sure where he can go to pick up some good stuff that we can't get in KS/MO. I'm a stereotypical BA, love citrus-y IPAs and sours, but if you California guys and gals have a recommendation on a beer I'll take your word for it!

Not sure there will be much in Bishop, it's a really small town in the Sierra's. Maybe he can look for Firestone, Deschutes, or Drakes, don't know what beers you get in Kansas from CA.

Have him pick up some Mammoth Brewing beers, and he may find some Kern beers in that area.

Hot tip!! Drive north to Mammoth Brewing Co. Pick up some local brews. Drive across the other side of 395 to Hot Creek hot springs. And no, not the main hot springs. There are about 7 or 8 smaller ones spread around. You wont be dissapointed. But please remember no bottles at the springs.

I think you're going to be disappointed.

At best, you might get lucky and
    a) like the taste of juniper & sage in a hoppy beer
    b) find a fresh 395 dipa from Mammoth

I honestly think that's your best case scenario for beer.

Kern, Russian River, Alpine, Bootleggers, Bruery, Pizza Port, Societe, Green Flash, Alesmith. . .

Yeah, not gonna see those in Bishop, CA.

Mammoth makes some decent stuff. But definitely hit the Mahogany Smoked meats store and maybe Erick Schat's Bakery in Bishop for some lunch.

IDK if I suck or what, but I thoroughly disliked any and all of Mammoth Brewing's offerings.

As Sir Charles would say, Turrrrible.

Mammoth Liquor in Mammoth Lakes has a good selection of beers about 30 minutes north of Bishop. Just have your friend tell Spike (the owner) to fill the box for you. I'm sure you could call and talk to him on the phone if you want to go through what he has available.

as everyone kind of already said.. Bishop isn't exactly the hot spot to find bottles. Although your friend should 100% stop by for some jerkey and also to Schat's... without a doubt.

He would be better off heading north to Mammoth. Not only is Mammoth Brewing there.. whether you like it or not. But the stores there also have a stronger variety thanks to Mammoth mtn. bringing in some out of towners.

or you could just tell him to suck it up, be a good friend, and get his ass to LA or the Bay Area....

I wouldn't say Mammoth Brewery sucks. When I first got into the craft scene I would take growlers of Stone and bottles of Ballast Point, Alpine and others with me to Mammoth and enjoy them in the beautiful scenery. I would stop in Mammoth Brewery and pick up bottles. Back 4-5 years ago they were okay. Today they are still just okay. What sucks is Golden Road Brewery. Their beers that is.

Lair of the Bear is a good RIS, some of their other stuff is decent. Ridgecrest is an hour and a half (maybe two) away and gets KRBC distro. But yeah, Bishop is sort of too far from either direction to carry most CA beer.
